DeVore objects to Bailey’s use of the term “hellhole” to describe Chicago

Monday, Aug 22, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Republican attorney general nominee Tom DeVore on Darren Bailey’s regular use of the term “hellhole” to describe Chicago

Reducing crime and public corruption was a key takeaway from our conversations and many of our candidates messages. Sadly this messaging was overshadowed by the medias desire to write provocative news about the city of Chicago being once more called a hellhole. That narrative consumed the airwaves of all the good things talked about during Republican Day. […]

Such a generic off the cuff comment does little to add to the conversation of how to improve life in the city and is for all intents and purposes a slight towards its millions of residents.

My campaign understands and appreciates the value the city of Chicago and its residents bring to our state. What happens in Chicago ripples across our state. The people of Chicago love their city just as other residents in other cities across our state. None of them want their city being ridiculed. Once I’m elected Attorney General, I’ll work tirelessly to rid the city of Chicago of the crime and corruption that’s causing her harm. We can and will restore the city to the beacon it once was. Until that time comes, and while Chicago might be suffering a little under the weight of its incompetent leadership, she’s far from a hellhole.

* So Bailey insists on calling Chicago a ‘hellhole?’ Well, Lightfoot slams his campaign as a ‘dumpster fire.’ - After the Republican candidate for governor again ripped the city where over one-fifth of the state’s residents live, the mayor snapped back on Twitter.

I do think it’s adorable that DeVore wants to be seen as more thoughtful than Bailey.

I guess Bailey is just too extreme for Illinois, and DeVore too.

Ok I’m gonna need a video of Devore saying this, preferably while holding today’s newspaper.

  3. - Big Dipper - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 9:06 am:

DeVore has an upcoming fundraiser in Edison Park, a Chicago neighborhood home to many cops. Maybe he has seen the polling and his is marginally better than Bailey’s.

Wonder who wrote that statement for DeDe’s campaign.

  5. - Arsenal - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 9:16 am:

When you’re too caustic for Tom DeVore…

  6. - Sox Fan - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 9:28 am:

In my opinion, that’s a solid response. Too bad it came from Tom DeVore and all the baggage he carries around

  7. - Regular democrat - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 9:36 am:

Bailey should call DeVore and ask him if he can borrow his writer. That was solid gets the point across effectively.

  8. - Norseman - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 9:52 am:

DeVore trying to be a thoughtful candidate. Isn’t that special.

  9. - Joe Bidenopolous - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 9:57 am:

Everyone who had DeVore pivoting before Bailey, raise your hands

  10. - Streator Curmudgeon - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 10:07 am:

    Sooo…a dadgummit-hole?

  11. - Dotnonymous - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 10:17 am:

    Tom DeVore sounds incredibly literate…suddenly.

  12. - Huh? - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 10:17 am:

You would think that reading is fundamental for a lawyer. Perhaps debore should read the Attorney General Act, 15 ILCS 205, before he tries to clean up Chicago.

  13. - Big Dipper - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 10:25 am:

==Perhaps debore should read the Attorney General Act, 15 ILCS 205, before he tries to clean up Chicago.==

He’s been licensed only since November 2011, so there is likely a lot he doesn’t know about the law.

  14. - Lurker - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 10:34 am:

So Bailey is wrong for saying it and then you all jump on DeVore for saying stop it.

You people are really into the messenger more than the message. How about saying something like DeVore is right for once, even if we doubt it will happen again?

  15. - Give Us Barabbas - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 10:58 am:

Folks lend a hand in the hellhole, you know where you stand in the hellhole…

  16. - Bourbon Street - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 11:09 am:

    ==she’s far from a hellhole==

This statement coming from DeVore puts me in mind of the old adage: “Even a broken clock is right twice a day.”

Also, even though I agree with DeVore (I never thought I’d say that), it’s a sad day when the level of political discourse sinks to the level where candidates for state office are debating whether a major city in their state is a “hellhole”.

  17. - Amalia - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 11:23 am:

oh DeVore, how cute you are trying not to call it a hellhole. guess you wish you got the word first because your conduct and your campaign is a volcano of awful

  18. - JS Mill - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 12:00 pm:

=You people are really into the messenger more than the message. How about saying something like DeVore is right for once, even if we doubt it will happen again?=

What is he, a puppy that needs a treat when he is good? That is a minimum expectation. Call him and his pal Bailey out for their nonsense and maybe you have an argument.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 12:06 pm:

    ===You people===

The in-law uncle enters the chat

Deciding that the 3rd largest city in America, the economic engine of the Midwest region, a global city recognized by companies relocating and tourist as a top place… isn’t a “&@$%# Hole” is something that “begrudgingly” should be applauded… by “you people”?

DeVore is a victim of what exactly? Having a “majority-type” of opinion where folks likely don’t want self loathing?

  20. - Suburban Mom - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 12:22 pm:

    It’s more of a pie-hole.

    A pizza-pie-hole, if you will.

  21. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 12:36 pm:

Using the Fair speech to rekindle the hellhole controversy was an idiotic unforced error by Bailey. He invited the press to spend time focusing on hellhole instead of the supposedly awful record. This is 1000% on your candidate (and yea, he’s the GOP nominee who got 56% so he’s your candidate). And yea, I find it pretty astounding that DeVore is the reasonable sounding statewide candidate on that ticket. As someone said above, when you’re too shrill for Tom DeVore…

  22. - Loop Lady - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 12:55 pm:

Cheap shot…all major cities are struggling these days.
    Darren is pretty transparent, no?

  23. - Dotnonymous - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 1:27 pm:

Hell seems to weigh heavy on the minds of White Christian Nationalists…guilty consciences?

  24. - Jibba - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 1:52 pm:

===You people are really into the messenger ===

It’s not that. I just don’t believe him.

  25. - MoralMinority - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 3:56 pm:

I’m amazed. DeVore actually made a reasonable statement. I wonder what prompted him to say something so critical of Bailey’s position. They seemed such buddies back in the dark days of Covid. Did Darren not pay DeVore’s bill for legal fees? Darren give him a bad Mountain Dew? DeVore sees the Bailey campaign as a sinking ship and is trying to get as far away as possible to avoid being pulled under?

  26. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 4:25 pm:

Why is it a cheap shot to criticize the failing leadership and ineffective policies that is causing so many cities to struggle?

  27. - Roads Scholar - Monday, Aug 22, 22 @ 7:52 pm:

This guy running for Cook County State’s Attorney, or Attorney General? He’s going to be fighting crime across the State? God bless him.

  28. - Hon. Don Gerard - Tuesday, Aug 23, 22 @ 12:56 am:

Lucky Pierre’s ineffective and failing logic in his comments make them hell holes.

    …with not-at-all-a-cheap-shot respect, of course.
