Proof that if you bend the political spectrum enough the far left and far right eventually meet.
- Jerry - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:18 am:
I thought the whole point of the law is to prevent what Devore is complaining about. I thought all of the Republicans are saying there will be anarchy on the streets if pot smokers and shoplifters are free.
- Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:20 am:
OK, riddle me this… who besides a judge has discretion as to whether a defendant gets released from jail now?
- vern - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:21 am:
Devore’s occasional ventures into Opposite Land have been fascinating, but he doesn’t seem to have his heart in them enough to break through. Without a lot of authentic follow through, he just ends up looking too cute by half.
- Shrugging in Chicago - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:23 am:
So apparently this guy has principles as a hardcore libertarian, albeit very misguided principles (just like most hardcore libertarians). He is, however, correct about the Illinois Constitution prohibiting denial of pretrial release in probationable cases. Even though that never stopped judges from doing it before, and it ceetainly won’t stop them from doing it now.
- Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:27 am:
Nice gaslighting Jerry.
The concerns about the SAFE T act have to do with violent offenders being free to roam the streets like they have been doing in Cook County.
JB thinks it’s about single Mothers stealing diapers getting thrown in jail for 6 months with no evidence.
You might have missed it but pot is now legal so who is getting incarcerated for smoking it?
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:29 am:
===so who is getting incarcerated for smoking it?===
Dealers.
- XonXoff - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:30 am:
DeVore sure looked happy in twitter pics with whatever was stirred up yesterday at Sunnyside Cannabis with Beverly Miles, ECCSC, and Bailey in attendance.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:32 am:
===like they have been doing in Cook County.===
This seems a bit pointed beyond Foxx but offenders…
Old, angry white folks seem to point to She-Caw-Go, and the white female victim Proft highlighted.
You’re starting to say the quiet part out loud - Lucky Pierre -

==The concerns about the SAFE T act have to do with violent offenders being free to roam the streets==
You have no evidence to say this since the law hasn’t even been implemented. Instead of crying the sky is falling perhaps some of you could wait until we see what actually happens. I happen to think you are all full of it when you claim that the jails are all of a sudden going to have to release everyone. You want to accuse someone of gaslighting? That’s funny coming from you.
Besides, DeVore is arguing exactly the opposite of what you are trying to argue.
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:34 am:
===JB thinks it’s about single Mothers stealing diapers getting thrown in jail for 6 months with no evidence.===
Are you saying that is not helping, you’re cool with that happening?
You brought it up, you believe a single mom stealing diapers should be incarcerated 6 months for that alleged (not proven) crime?
It’s a yes or no, don’t skirt it.
- Demoralized - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:37 am:
I don’t think I’ll be taking the advice of Tom DeVore on what is and isn’t constitutional. He’s not exactly what I would term a good and professional lawyer. Quite the opposite.

Other than the smoker on the “L” recently I don’t find downtown
Chicago to be anything like Moss Eisley Spaceport. At least the way it’s portrayed in tv commercials.
- Extremely Annoyed - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:46 am:
Wait…so which is it? The purge and all criminals roaming free or the judges having free reign to hold whomever in jail? It literally cannot be both.
- Jerry - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:46 am:
I stand corrected about pot smokers.
- Arsenal - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 9:54 am:

- Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:02 am:
What was the lie?
Was it the fact that it is not possible under Illinois law for someone to be incarcerated for 6 months for stealing diapers?
Or was it the fact that pre trial detention has been severely limited by Judge Tim Evans for some time now?
Both are 100% true
- MisterJayEm - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:04 am:
“if you bend the political spectrum enough the far left and far right eventually meet”
I know of no one on the left who believes that Illinois would be better off without the SAFE-T Act.

- H-W - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:14 am:
First, let’s remember that the experts who craft laws know more than a self-professed grifter from Greenville. The law as written with protect the poor from being incarcerated at alarming rates prior to trial, and ethnic minorities are more likely to be poor than are white Anglos.
Second, let’s remember who is talking. DeVore is always shouting about lawsuits and claimants and willing to take anyone’s money to file a claim. Claiming racial discrimination (prior to the laws enactment) is simply ginning up potential business for future frivolous lawsuits. If he can raise 3/4 of a million dollars from working class moms, promise the moon, and then “deliver” a one-week early lifting of the mask mandate, I am sure acting like an expert on race relations is just another sales pitch.
Finally, let’s remember who we are talking about.
DeVore.
- Steve - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:15 am:
-you believe a single mom stealing diapers should be incarcerated 6 months for that alleged (not proven)-
Has she been convicted of shoplifting in her past? If not . No.
- Jerry - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:16 am:
Should we be raising taxes for incarcerating a mom for stealing diapers? It’s not cheap to put people in jail. And do we send the refugee babies on a bus to Florida or Texas?
- JS Mill - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:34 am:
=The concerns about the SAFE T act have to do with violent offenders being free to roam the streets like they have been doing in Cook County.=
Brought to you by the same “law enforcement” folks that said “chinese” organized crime would buy up rural homes and start meth labs and grow houses if cannabis became legal.
I am still waiting for the Edgar County Sheriff to make an arrest.
Seriously, how often do these people get a pass on shouting that the sky is falling all of the time? LP?
=I don’t think I’ll be taking the advice of Tom DeVore=
Ditto. I would love to see his score card. He has lost more than he has one and I bet it isn’t even close.
=“if you bend the political spectrum enough the far left and far right eventually meet”=
There is a legit political theory that has been around for a while, but it is more about the belief that the extreme left and right become authoritarian as the movement progresses (much like the French and Russian revolutions),not that they agree on policy.
On final judgement he is 0′fer on COVID cases.

This is what you wrote;
===JB thinks it’s about single Mothers stealing diapers getting thrown in jail for 6 months with no evidence.===
Here’s a gaslighting, and here’s why;
You are now saying it should be interpreted that you *knew* that isn’t happening, but you are adding *confusion* to the realty to that, and to what the Act does.
That’s why it’s, at the very least, misleading, that’s me be generous.
===severely===
That’s an opinion, and a biased opinion to the meaning of the word.
You’re truly disingenuous, I’m guessing you are a bit as of late, almost like “Bill”, but not letting anyone in your bit.
- Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:42 am:
Are you actually characterizing the concerns of Kwame Raoul, Democratic legislators and 100 out of 102 States Attorneys who oppose the law as “fringe conspiracy theorists?”
- Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:45 am:
What is truly disingenuous is for the Governor to claim single mother’s are being held for 6 months behind bars for stealing diapers and the SAFE T act will save them but by all means focus on me.
- Dotnonymous - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:48 am:

===Are you actually characterizing the concerns of Kwame Raoul, Democratic legislators and 100 out of 102 States Attorneys who oppose the law as “fringe conspiracy theorists?”===
When you read it as a gaslighting bit in the tradition of reverse belief, it kinda makes sense to why it’s always an extreme.
To your phony concern, it’s simple…
Where the messaging failed, it failed at jump street.
The Act wasn’t going into effect for months, no one has any clear understanding how it will fully play, or be actually implemented, at signing, all should have embraced the Act, but also made quite clear…
“This is a first and very needed step, more steps will be needed, and the beginning will get better with legislation following to make it stronger and better for all”
Now we see folks wanting that to be *their* position, one where a pouncing can be found… even if all sides can agree is the next step.
- Arsenal - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 10:51 am:
== What was the lie?==
“Violent offenders being free to roam the streets” was the lie.

Maybe, but neither was in the original post that I corrrctly labeled as a lie.
Turns out you love gaslighting when you do it.

== single mother’s are being held for 6 months behind bars ==
LPs example actually exposes the reason why so many States Attorneys don’t like this law, and it has nothing to do with dangerous criminals roaming the streets.
A low income person is charged with a crime, pleads not guilty, and is held because they can’t make bail. After a few months, depending on the crime, someone from the SAs office pays a visit and tells them if they plead guilty, they will be released for time served because they have been held longer than the typical (sometimes max) sentence. The person makes the logical choice and pleads guilty. The SA gets a conviction without the hassle of a trial.
A person not locked up pending trial has much less reason to plea bargain; which means fewer easy convictions for the SA.
- Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Sep 28, 22 @ 2:28 pm:
That is Governor Pritzker’s example not mine.
Many people are concerned about the implications of the SAFE T act on violent offenders not petty thieves.
It appears to be a totally made up story as he cannot document it and it is not a possible scenario under current Illinois law

Because most voters spend all day on Capitolfax, or because of all of Darren Bailey’s broadcast television ads?
Crime is not even a winning ad in the Republican Party, which is why Richard Irvin is spending his time cracking down on ethics violations in Aurora now.
