Reading “Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland,” a Xmas gift. The repeating theme is that the people just get numb from the carnage. It just becomes background noise as people go about their lives.
This rampant gun violence has got to stop. We can’t just idlily sit back and throw up our hands and say we can’t do anything.

Sickening and gut-wrenching. Other countries would only follow America for power/military strength, not for our atrocious record on gun violence. What kind of an example do we set for others to follow? Sorry, world. For the current legislative push and other attempts to regulate guns (per capita gun deaths are higher in lax gun law states), there is opposite action in GOP states.

exactly. now imagine that there are thousands of voices screaming that way at this event alone. This is why the July 4th assault weapon shooting had such an impact. those injured and killed, dozens, and those terrorized, thousands. and now add up all the incidents and those affected state wide. change this.

The difference between normal people and the gun fetishists is that normal people only need to hear that sound recording once, to know exactly what needs to be done. The gun nuts just shrug and chant:”my freedoms”.

The problem is in part, that too many Illinoisans and Americans cannot distinguish between the me and the we.
Those who scream loudest about eliminating crime and criminal (a “we” issue they share), too quickly reach the conclusion that individuals have a natural right to own weapons (a “me” issue). When confronted with mass shootings, they can only conclude “me” should not have to sacrifice for others.
“We” have problems. “We” are in trouble. “We” are problematic. But not “Me.” The only way this logic work is if “Me” is not a part of “We.” And if the existence of “Me” requires that “me” not be held to the same standards as “We,” then there is not “we.” There is no “U.S.” There are only ‘me’s.

This statement is not just wrong, it’s insulting. The events of July 4, 2022, do not fall squarely on the shoulders of the father and the ISP, but I’m pretty sure you already know that.
Here’s a case in point of the failure to recognized the broader societal responsibility at play, where for some reason we think it’s okay for an 18 year old who’s not a member of any branch of the Armed Forces or police department, to get their hands on a weapon designed for war. Shame on the killer, shame on the parents, but also shame on us for continuing to allow this to happen. If that recording doesn’t stir something inside of you then I don’t know what will. Those cries with the shots are haunting. It’s terrible enough hearing it on a battlefield, but utterly devastating, in a school, on a city street, in a synagogue, or at a parade.
