“And please remember people, that no matter who you are
And what you do to live, thrive and survive
There are still some things that make us all the same
    You, me, them, everybody, everybody”

    - Elwood Blues, Illinoisan.

    Have a happy Valentines day

Another interesting poll out this morning from something called 1983 Labs. Shows Vallas and Lightfoot neck and neck

It’s a sad day. The Michigan State shooting last night and today is the 15th anniversary of the shooting at NIU. It’s virtually every day. What kind of monsters have we become?

==The Michigan State shooting last night and today is the 15th anniversary of the shooting at NIU.==

Also sadly today was 5 years ago today (I don’t like to call it an “anniversary”) since the Marjery Stoneman Douglas HS massacre.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 8:37 am:

It’s heartbreaking that mass shootings, remembrances of mass shootings past (including Northern Illinois University), and the continuing mass shootings I find myself unable to find the change necessary as those excusing such tragedies see no need to limit the possibly of them happening again

    Helplessly sad.

We in Illinois are tasked daily with trying to be not helpless but empowered to make the changes.

The MSU shooting seems like a campus safety question. we view these institutions as large placid places. crimes happen all the time, not just as serious as this one. Securing buildings, campuses, industrial compounds, very important business.

==Also sadly today was 5 years ago today==

Tomorrow it’ll be four years since Henry Pratt. I’m tired of society’s RIGHT to bear arms not being paired with some level of RESPONSIBILITY.

  8. - Huh? - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 9:46 am:

“no need to limit the possibly of them happening again”

Those who advocate an unfettered 2A right will be undeterred in their blind faith that guns save lives.

  9. - RNUG - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 9:49 am:

Anybody follow the local police scanner groups? And noticed the uptick in crimes committed the past couple of weeks using U-Haul trucks?

And now we’ve had an incident a couple of days ago in Brooklyn with a driver of a U-Haul running down people on sidewalks and in bike lanes. The driver was apparently known to police and family for various issues, including not taking their medications.

If you can’t stop people who are known to have issues and previous law enforcement incidents, what hope do we have of stopping random events?

  10. - Weary - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 9:53 am:

As I watched this MSU shooting news coverage last night I couldn’t help notice that these students were doing what they’ve been doing all of their lives….evacuating and locking down at school. It made me wonder what this generation might do about this never-ending gun violence when they are the generation in power. Will they finally do something that makes a difference since they are the generation that has been bearing the brunt of its horrible effects? And when they do, what will they say about the current generation in power? Will they ask why they WOULD’NT do anything?

  11. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 9:54 am:

Some team from some neighboring state won the Super Bowl, congrats. Illinois did make money from that state, whose residents came here to place legal bets.

  12. - Amalia - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 10:14 am:

MSU is also part of the very troubling litany of high profile staff at Big Ten schools engaged in sexual assaults, Larry Nassar. Not such cases in Illinois but equally troubling is random sexual assault ….at U of I Champaign students report 1 in 7 women say they were assaulted in 2016, a report of 1 in 5 in years after. Campus violence is real.

  13. - Politically Homeless Black Man - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 10:18 am:

The Mayor looks more and more unsuitable to lead this city with each debate. Vallas vs ???. I think Johnson will make it to the runoff vs Vallas.

  14. - Blue Dog - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 10:22 am:

come on Paul Schimpf. pick a lane.

  15. - Steve Z - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 10:43 am:

The absolutist right-wing take on the Second Amendment is absurd. We have a constitutional right to interstate travel but every driver must be licensed and every vehicle registered. If devices designed for destruction and their users can’t be subject to the same reasonable regulation as those designed for transport, maybe we should give the gun nuts the Confederacy and pave the way for such regulation (but I’d be for building that wall).

Rest in power and making of wonderful food, Lauren Verdich https://chicagolgbthalloffame.org/verdich-lauren/

  17. - thisjustinagain - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 1:14 pm:

On MSU: There’s no such thing as a gun-free zone; criminals will always get them and have them. Learn to protect yourself with firearms. The Greenwood, Indiana mall shooter was stopped by an armed citizen in seconds, not by law enforcement. And that’s not the first time active offenders have been stopped by armed citizens. The law is clear; the 2nd Amendment isn’t an option, doesn’t require a ‘need’ or ‘good cause’ to exercise, and is not made operative by, or restricted to, militia service. Time for anti-gunners to fact the facts before trying to disarm the law-abiding again under false pretenses.

  18. - Nearly Normal - Tuesday, Feb 14, 23 @ 2:50 pm:

Concerns raised in Central Illinois about the future of Pontiac Correctional Center.
