Report: US Rep. Danny Davis will run again

Monday, May 8, 2023 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Lynn Sweet

Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., is making it official: He will seek another term, raising the question on Monday of whether Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin will continue exploring a congressional bid, since she had said she would run only if Davis retired.

Davis, 82, will make a public announcement about his 2024 bid for a 15th term in the coming weeks, Davis chief of staff Tumia Romero, who is also his top political adviser, told the Sun-Times.

The impending campaign launch and official announcement seems intended to make it clear beyond a doubt Davis is not going to retire. On Feb. 2, 2023, Davis, filed a statement of 2024 candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.

Conyears-Ervin told the Sun-Times in a statement: “Last month, I announced I was exploring a run for Congress, and that process continues. In the coming months, I will determine how I can best serve the people of the Seventh Congressional District.”

    82. And this guy is expected to understand AND legislate on modern day issues. Unbelievable.

  2. - Just Another Anon - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 1:37 pm:

As the 8th oldest Congressman, he’s got a fighting chance to make it to top five oldest.

I hear Napolitano (86) is not planning on running again and Hoyer (83) already announced his retirement. Now, Hal Rogers, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Jim Clyburn and Bill Pascrell all seem to be in good health and don’t seem to plan to move on anytime soon. Maxine Waters has too many family members on payroll to retire, and Pelosi gives me the feeling that if the CA Senate race doesn’t go her way she may step down or not run.

At point does this generation of public officer holders turn loose the reins and hand it over to a generation that understands the world need new ideas and leadership?

That includes Biden, Trump, Feinstein, Grassley and now Davis and the rest of the crew who are so drunk on their own power they can’t let go. For the love of Pete, stop dying your hair, stop wearing form forming underwear, stop trying to make people think you know what is best today, go away.

On top of that, for someone with this kind of longevity he’s been pretty useless as a legislator.

  5. - Montrose - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 1:50 pm:

He was pushed hard by Kina Collins in the last primary. She showed there is a path to beating him. I am surprised he didn’t take it as a sign it’s time to walk away.

  6. - Amalia - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 1:52 pm:

West Side Machinem so he’s running again.

  7. - Early voter - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 1:54 pm:

There are so many better progressive options in this district including Kina Collins and Marie Newman. It is time for Davis and especially his archconservative district director to go.

  8. - Socially DIstant watcher - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 2:01 pm:

Comments here are funny. Y’all think he’s out of touch? Go ahead and beat him. It’ll be easy if he’s such a poor match for the district, right?

  9. - TJ - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 2:06 pm:

That seems like a vote of confidence in his belief that the 2024 House elections could go well for Dems. He’d probably be less-willing to run at his age if he thought he’d still be out of power with a GOP hold.

  10. - Just Another Anon - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 2:20 pm:

    @Early Voter.

Stop trying to make Marie Newman happen.

  11. - Sir Reel - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 2:28 pm:

Danny has to run for that all-important 15th term so he can continue his impressive record of accomplishment. Oh wait, I’m thinking of someone else.

He literally made an “ad” that a middle schooler could make with iMovie with the grammatical and spelling errors expected.

Easy to say he is too old or be sarcastic and say glad he is running he is a needed voice and brings maturity to an institution that needs it. But really it is up to his district if voters want him they deserve to get what they voted for. Same with the Republicans I really don’t like if they win in primaries or general voters get what they deserve

  14. - NIU Grad - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 2:44 pm:

I’m honestly less concerned about his age (our president is 80, after all), than I am about his longevity in the position and how much he is actually accomplishing. It’s not like he’s a national leader on topics after so many decades of service…he just seems to show up at other people’s press conferences now and then. The party needs a jolt of life…to be fair, I don’t think the City Treasurer would be able to bring anything other than controversy.

==That includes Biden, Trump, Feinstein, Grassley and now Davis==

Also Durbin. He will be 82 in ‘26 when his current term is up.

  17. - Joe Bidenopolous - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 3:00 pm:

Congress needs age limits. It’s time for boomers to get the eff out of the way

  18. - Rich Miller - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 3:05 pm:

===It’s time for boomers to get===

    Davis is a pre-boomer.

  19. - PP - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 3:10 pm:

Danny K Davis has to be defeated - hope Kina Collins or anybody beats him this next go around

  20. - Joe Bidenopolous - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 3:14 pm:

    =Davis is a pre-boomer.=

    Them too!

  21. - Friendly Bob Adams - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 3:18 pm:

In general, I think elderly politicians should think of the next generation and gracefully leave the stage. But there are some distinctions.

Davis won’t make much of a difference either way, since he’s basically just another reliable D vote in the House. Anyone who can name his most recent contribution as a Representative, please comment.

Feinstein on the other hand is messing up votes for federal judges that will have long term consequences for the country.

  22. - Ben Tre - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 3:19 pm:

Maybe his plan is to follow in Lipinksi’s footsteps: win, retire, choose his successor. It’s the Chicago Way.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 3:49 pm:

Beat David then the problem is solved.

The process isn’t perfect, but “beat Davis”.

  24. - New Day - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 4:01 pm:

Danny Davis’ (D-Rev. Moon) issue is not that he’s old. He’s been simply taking up space for more than a decade. Past time for him to go. But he must be defeated which nobody has been able to do yet.

  25. - Amalia - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 4:14 pm:

Marie Newman…..(smashing water bottle on deck in anger.)

  26. - Candy Dogood - Monday, May 8, 23 @ 5:20 pm:

Danny Davis has been an elected official for more than 4 decades and he has been in congress since 1997. As he services his 26th years on congress, he wants to pursue another 2 year term. He is in a pretty safe Democratic seat.

I think he owes it to us to explain exactly what he will be doing with an additional term that he was not able to accomplish in what will then be the first 28 years as a United States representative. Whatever has motivated his decision to cling to power until he is physically no longer able to cling to anything is preventing the Democratic Party from being able to renew itself.
