Legislature to return Wednesday

Friday, May 19, 2023 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

Senate President Don Harmon and House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch issued a joint statement on progress toward an agreed budget.

“When we came to Springfield in January, we made it clear that our top priority was a fiscally responsible budget that prioritized hardworking Illinoisans. That continues to be true. Conversation is ongoing and negotiations are productive. We are committed to passing a good, balanced budget for the people of Illinois.”

Both chambers will return next week to finish work for the spring session. The Senate is scheduled to return Wednesday and Thursday. The House is scheduled to return Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

* But, wait. WGN TV just told its audience that the budget is already passed

Illinois lawmakers wrapped up a busy week in Springfield Friday after passing the state’s budget by the democratic imposed May 19 deadline.

…Adding… Press release…

On the last scheduled day of legislative session in the Illinois House, and no news of a potential state budget agreement in sight, Minority Leader Tony McCombie released the following statement:

“We have made every effort to be at the table. Now, with extra days in the session schedule we will continue to make ourselves available. There is much to accomplish and too much on the line to disregard our caucus from this process.

“We want to govern, so I say it again: don’t disregard our value.”

    If the Republicans want to govern in Illinois they need to make the case for their value to a majority of the voters.

    They have every opportunity to be involved at the legislature and if they want the Democrats to value their contribution towards legislation it needs to be something other than hateful bigotry and promises of violence.

    What a silly and childish demand. Perhaps the Minority Leader should start the Karen Caucus.

    Dear “GOP GA” … “helpers”…

    Will any of these folks be “green” on the budget and funding bills?

    The answer is “no” so Dems “will take it from here”

    It’s adorable, but…

    JB is going to balance (that’s a false description) the same way every Governor for the last 40 years with the exception of Pat Quinn- paying less into the 5 pension systems then what is actuarially required. If would be better to cap or cancel the State’s new health care for non- citizens then to fully fund the pensions.

  5. - JS Mill - Friday, May 19, 23 @ 6:40 pm:

    I like OW’s take. I think it really sums it up best.

    McCombie just sounds kind of sad.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 19, 23 @ 6:41 pm:

    I’ll also add… there’s a picture of all y’all GOPers at and around the podium.

    Let’s see how many will vote to fund the budget, will pass the budget… this go round.

    The O/U… 2.5?

    (Sigh)

    Dear Charlie Wheeler,

    Willy here, from Oswego. Hey. Huge fan, if you didn’t know already. Hope you’re chillin’ and enjoying this Friday.

    If you don’t mind, I’m gonna say to - Sue - for the 577th time use the Google key to find any of your “point of clarification” things about budgets, which - Sue - won’t read or maybe understand, but I didn’t wanna just do that without saying “hey” and you have my marker, so catch up with you sometime.

    Willy

    (Tips cap to - JS Mill -)

    OW, why are focusing on what the GOP is going to do? They’re never included in things like budgets and map drawing and then you think they should support what the Dems come up with in isolation. The real take-away from this is that the Dems have supermajorities in both chambers, they have the governor’s mansion, they knew about the deadline all year, and they still couldn’t get it done by the date they announced. But if they would have scheduled 5/31/23 as the last session day, you can be pretty sure they would have got it done on 5/31/23 (or more likely 6/1/23 at 2:00 a.m.), before they did actually need GOP votes.

    ===before they did actually need GOP votes.===

    Unless there’s a mass exodus out of town, they don’t need GOP votes.

    But, yeah, I think there were big mistakes made in assuming members would agree to things that they ended up opposing.

    I’m gonna stop ya here.

    It’s a phony/false imposed deadline. Just like the phony/false idea that this GOP GA will vote for any budget for any program that will help their own constituents.

    The reason they are a super minority with “zero for eight” statewide is this GOP is not in touch with policies the majority of voters want, and can’t find allies that they can agree with 80% of the time.

    It was the GOP at the podium gaslighting their own ineptitude.

    Whadda going to say if/when they pass something next week, “they missed a deadline”?

    The O/U of folks who stood there that’ll fund this state with a budget and funding is 2.5

    That’s the takeaway.

    I learned from the Raunerites. The GOP will burn down this state before they will help it.

  11. - Rich Miller - Friday, May 19, 23 @ 7:12 pm:

    ===It’s a phony/false imposed deadline===

    It was on the calendar. It was artificial, because busting the deadline means nothing in real life. But they put it on the calendar.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 19, 23 @ 7:13 pm:

    ===(or more likely 6/1/23 at 2:00 a.m.)===

    And?

    It’s a weird flex, thinking the Dems are dysfunctional, given they run circles around the GOP, get compromises, pass into law policies (winners make policy) and the best the party can do is nominate Darren Bailey.

    Dysfunctional? Physician heal the GOP patient

  13. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 19, 23 @ 7:15 pm:

    ===But they put it on the calendar.===

    I guess I’m very guilty of seeing the realties too hard… and the posturing too… cynically.

    That’s on me.
