Today’s gruesome task

Wednesday, Jul 26, 2023 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Click here to read the replies to this tweet (or Xeet, or whatever it is now). Flat-out and even enthusiastic racism, historical revisionism, whataboutism all mixed in with weight comments. It’s a collection of miserably horrible people the likes of which you may have never seen before…

Just vile. Unforgivable. And Elon has given these bottomfeeders a platform with blue checkmarks.

  2. - Tony DeKalb - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:12 pm:

    Oof. Do I gotta?

  3. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:16 pm:

Made me ill the first time I looked thru these, and what’s so terribly sickening is this continued and uninhibited empowerment and emboldening to writing such vile and being proud to say such things.

There’s no shame, they want the attention and cheering from the absolute worst of society, and to be embraced by those just as vile.

  4. - Mark D - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:17 pm:

=== “…miserably horrible people the likes of which you may have never seen before” ===

    First time on Twitter?

    I refuse this task.

  5. - Homebody - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:18 pm:

And most of them are enthusiastic voters.

  6. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:19 pm:

    ===I refuse this task.===

    Ditto.

  7. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:23 pm:

    ===First time on Twitter?===

Oh, please. I’ve been on that site for years and years. But I tend to stay away from national stuff. State politics rarely brings out this huge amount of racist intensity. A few comments here and there. Maybe even a dozen or so. But this is wild.

  8. - Dotnonymous x - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:24 pm:

Hate rots the human heart from the inside out.

  9. - JoanP - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:27 pm:

I’m assuming it’s because I’m not on Twitter (or whatever it is these days), but I can’t see the replies. I think that’s probably a good thing.

  10. - Socially DIstant watcher - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:29 pm:

There are many differences between this site and Twitter but one of the bigger ones is that Rich actively moderates the comments.

It takes time and it probably makes some enemies but thank you, Rich, for making the effort. This site is better for it.

  11. - Roadrager - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:31 pm:

==There’s no shame, they want the attention and cheering from the absolute worst of society, and to be embraced by those just as vile.==

As a bonus, the website’s owner is now convincing them there could be financial incentive in doing so.

  12. - Big Dipper - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:32 pm:

==most of them are enthusiastic voters==

    and we know which party.

  13. - NIU Grad - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:32 pm:

This is now the Twitter primary audience. There’s no saving that site now.

  14. - Norseman - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:33 pm:

MAGA didn’t create racism and bigotry, but it’s leadership and propagandists have normalized and propagated it to the detriment of the country.

  15. - OneMan - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:33 pm:

Yeah, you don’t want to read those replies.

You see that stuff and wonder why anyone advertises on X anymore. I wouldn’t want my brand within 100 miles of that.

You knew these people were out there, you would encounter them IRL, but the ability to demonstrate these feelings to the wider world (and the comfort in doing so) is pathetic.

  16. - AnonAnon - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:35 pm:

If we go with the traditional spanish pronunciation of ‘x’ (”sh”) - I would agree with the new post name of “Xeet”…

  17. - Leslie K - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:36 pm:

I did click, but grateful I can’t see the replies. (Probably because I don’t have an account?)

Twitter was on the verge of disappearing just before it finally took off. I suppose now is the time for it to actually disappear.

  18. - Dotnonymous x - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:36 pm:

Never did Twitter…and glad of it.

  19. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:39 pm:

Tried to look. Twitter says my acct is suspended fur violating the rules. I don’t tweet. Lol. Perhaps not tweeting makes Elon mad.

  20. - danray - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:45 pm:

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the deplorables.

  21. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:46 pm:

wow. I don’t think I know anyone who would spout such vile nonsense. who knows these kinds of a…. what can we do to change opinions?

  22. - Lurker - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:49 pm:

I left the X the day Musk bought it. I’m glad I did as he is a $&@/ !$&””/; and a vile person. His racism sounds like it’s spreading quickly on his platform.

  23. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 12:50 pm:

“This is now the Twitter primary audience. There’s no saving that site now.”

Agree. Thankfully, Threads is running, where there is much less of this kind of “stuff.” Elon bought Twitter to force horrible views on people. Guess what? People and advertisers don’t have to stay there and be subjected to this.

  24. - Near West Side - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 1:09 pm:

The people who post those comments never, ever have their real names or photos on their social media profiles. If they are so sure of their opinions, why is that?

  25. - Big Dipper - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 1:16 pm:

Elon is busy claiming that the Covid vaccine was the cause of Bronny James’ cardiac issues. The guy is unhinged.

  26. - FormerParatrooper - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 1:18 pm:

I am genuinely appalled at the willful ignorance of people who should know better and who actually believe these things. One would think that after all the bloodshed in human history over prejudices that we would have learned.

  27. - Almost the Weekend - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 1:38 pm:

This is unrelated, but I do miss the institutional knowledge of commemters on here for State Government. That’s what I’ve noticed on the comments here in my opinion compared to five years ago. I learned alot just from reading the comments. I know some have retired and others unfortunately passed away, but hopefully more people can come in and fill that gap.

  28. - Nick Name - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 1:45 pm:

Racists: it’s a monument to a 14-year-old boy who was tortured to death because of a false accusation. But you racists got to come out of the shadows and cry about all the (pretend) unjust stuff done to white people? Are you really so thin-skinned that you can’t just leave it alone?

You’re racist. We get it. But for crying out loud, just deal with it when normal people want to mourn the horrific injustice done to Emmett Till.

  29. - Mamacita - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 1:50 pm:

Man, don’t ever read the comments unless you’re wanting to find a wretched hive of scum and villainy (or unless Oswego Willy is a commenter- my mom loves that guy)

  30. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 1:59 pm:

Read it and took one for the team. Ugh. The ugliness is out in the open now, legitimized politically and socially over the years. Now it has a major social media platform, one that is thankfully being diminished by people leaving or spending more time on other sites.

Politically in Illinois, it just about guarantees strength for Pritzker and Democrats.

  31. - Teacher Lady - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 2:18 pm:

Hard and fast rule - on any social media:
Do not, ever, read the comments.

  32. - West Sider - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 2:19 pm:

I ain’t gonna eXcrete no more in Elmo’s sewer. Deleted my account.

  33. - Teacher Lady - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 2:42 pm:

Don’t defame Elmo - He’s a cute, furry, red monster.
    Elmo loves you!

  34. - btowntruth from forgottonia - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 2:43 pm:

“And most of them are enthusiastic voters.”
Betcha can’t Quess….errr guess who and what they support.

  35. - btowntruth from forgottonia - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:32 pm:

    Rich,
I wasn’t surprised by the hate and racism in the comments so much as the large number of them.

  36. - Dotnonymous x - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:36 pm:

White skin is thin…and so fragile.

  37. - Dotnonymous x - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:43 pm:

    Humans are easily startled creatures…
who (historically) degenerate into small defensive/combative groups when confused…still.

  38. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:55 pm:

    ===loves that guy===

Truthfully, she’s a lone voice in a vast sea of discontent, thank her for me.

    :)

To the post, what’s disappointing is that saying the quiet part out loud, on social media like this, is the encouraging that goes on to be vile, to be angry, to show power of ugly words that should be powerless but aren’t to those ugly folks in these times.

It’s the loud two dozen that think they speak for “millions”, and in places they seemingly do, and that’s disappointing.

  39. - Dr. Love - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:04 pm:

It’s weird and bothersome what some people will post on the internet. Especially race and antisemitic things.
Maybe it’s progress that people do it anonymously on Twitter because that type of thinking is nowhere near as common as it once was.

  40. - Blitz - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 6:09 pm:

20 years ago there were a couple dozen or so online communities that were amazing to be a part of (mostly as a lurker), but once Facebook and Twitter came around and replaced those communities for a “one stop shop” arrangement I find it’s really hard to find ones like that. For me as of right now, this is one of only two that I look forward to reading the comments. Obviously Rich Miller has a lot to do with that, so I guess I’m just saying thanks!
