Circus comes to town

Tuesday, Sep 26, 2023 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Sun-Times

Chicago Democrats on Monday lambasted Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee for planning a crime forum in Chicago on Tuesday, rather than working to avoid a federal government shutdown.

Republican members of the committee plan to blame Chicago’s violent crime on Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and what they say are her “pro-crime and anti-victim policies” at the forum Tuesday at the city’s Fraternal Order of Police office on the Near West Side, according to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan’s office.

Jordan went on social media Monday to criticize Chicago’s handling of violent crime, writing on the platform X that a string of armed robberies in Chicago is “what happens when Democrats run your city.” In another post, he wrote, “30 shot. 3 killed. One weekend. Democrat-run Chicago.” […]

Legislation that funds the federal government expires this weekend. Without intervention from lawmakers, the government will shut down Sunday. Federal agencies would have to stop all nonessential work, and would not be able to issue paychecks as long as the shutdown lasts. The impact would hit roughly 2 million military personnel and more than 2 million civilian workers across the nation.

Jordan isn’t looking for ideas to make things better. He’s coming here to troll Chicago. That’s it. Don’t fall for the goofy “smackdown” hype promoted elsewhere. It’ll be forgotten as soon as he leaves town.

Jim Jordan around a bunch of police? I wonder if any of them have ever busted a pedo ring, if so they’ll probably recognize the vibe.

  2. - Steve Rogers - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:36 am:

Isn’t Marion, OH, in Jordan’s district, a meth hotbed? Perhaps take care of your own yard before complaining about someone else’s yard.

But I get it, this is all about performative outrage, and not actually wanting to solve real problems, like why meth is so prevalent in NE Ohio, or the government shut down.

  3. - Roadrager - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:36 am:

Crime in Chicago is all Kim Foxx’s fault, and Donald Trump knows one Chicago cop who could stop it all in two weeks if only he was allowed to do his job.

Gym Jordan is the poster child for Republicans’ complete inability to govern.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:47 am:

    ===inability to===

The feature is to not govern, to blow up the whole thing. It’s not a bug.

Don’t fall for this idea that the Jordans, Gaetz, et al are “bad” at things. The goal is to end things, by all means, including this trolling of Chicago, because distraction to purpose (in their case, governing) is how to burn it to the ground.

    Ignore them all.

  6. - John Lopez - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:49 am:

Listening to YouTube of this “field hearing” Only 6 members of the 25-members of the Republican side are in attendance in Chicago, plus Congresswoman Mary Miller is sitting with the Committee, but is not a member of the House Judiciary Committee as there are no Illinoisans, both Republican or Democrat, on Judiciary.

Chairman Jim Jordan, along with Congressmen Andy Biggs and Kevin Kiley plus Congresswoman Laurel Lee are present. I don’t recognize the other two guys and can’t see their name card to ID them.

BTW, should ALL committee/subcommittee meetings unrelated to preventing government shutdown be cancelled until the government is funded? Several hearings are scheduled between now and end of the week.

  7. - Concerned Chicagoan - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:49 am:

Right, I mean the real “circus” is not the avalanching crime and that will continue.

  8. - Jocko - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:50 am:

As others have said, if there’s anyone who’s “pro-crime and anti-victim” it’s Jim Jordan.

In addition to doing his best Sergeant Schultz impression as Ohio State wrestling coach…He seems to have completely forgotten having spoken to DJT on January 6th.

  9. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:51 am:

===is not the avalanching crime and that will continue.===

    LOL

Yeah, Jordan is going to do soooo much to make positive change.

Admit it, you’re in it for the troll.

  10. - low level - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 9:54 am:

==not the avalanching crime and that will continue.==

OK, very good, but what concrete proposals does Chairman Jordan have to address crime? I’ll wait.

  11. - Chicago Blue - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:01 am:

Mansfield, OH has a higher crime rate than Chicago. These jokers are charlatans.

It reminds me too much like an evangelical tent revival.

It’s about the showmanship to get the giving plate that’s passed full of cash.

  16. - Montrose - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:19 am:

I am just shocked Jordan feels safe stepping foot in Chicago. /s

  17. - John Lopez - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:23 am:

Oh no, Congressional Celebrity Caucus member Matt Gaetz, who serves on Judiciary Committee will deliver his remarks to the Chicago hearing via ZOOM, and Congresswoman Mary Miller will be allowed time to speak, in spite of not being a member of the Judiciary Committee.

The other members are ID’d, and they are Congressmen Cliff Bentz (OR), Ben Cline (VA) & Scott Fitzgerald (WI, arrived late).

  18. - Travel Guy - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:24 am:

Gym Jordan should be taking his road show to Tulsa or Dallas where the crime rates are even higher. I wonder why he’s not…/s

  19. - Sir Reel - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:28 am:

Jordan is a nonsensical motor mouth. Maybe he’ll talk some criminals into jail.

Glad to see my congressperson, Miller, hard at work accomplishing nada.

  20. - Back to the Future - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:32 am:

You would think these folks would be in Washington working to prevent a government shutdown.

  21. - NIU Grad - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:35 am:

Our local, conservative TV media are going to gobble it all up.

Better toss in a Paul Vallas Op-Ed on top of it all to round it all up.

  22. - Steve - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:36 am:

-Jordan isn’t looking for ideas to make things better-

Even if he did: he has no say. Local government is up to the voters who live in Chicago. Not enough registered Republicans live in Chicago.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:39 am:

===Not enough registered Republicans live in Chicago.===

    Chicago elections are non-partisan

It’s not that there aren’t enough Republicans in Chicago, voters are rejecting Republican ideals in Chicago.

Also, not a soul in the city, in any county, or this state is a registered “anything”

  24. - P - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:40 am:

Bet Harmon and Welch are happy they took that smiley pic a few weeks back with Catanzara.

  27. - This - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:42 am:

This isn’t about solving problems but building a narrative for the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Today’s hearing will be amplified in the millions of FOX households for days and weeks to come.

  28. - Steve - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:48 am:

-It’s not that there aren’t enough Republicans in Chicago-

A major indicator is how Chicago voters have voted at the presidential level the last 30 years. A Republican hasn’t gotten 20% of the vote that I’m aware of . They don’t live in Chicago in any significant numbers. It is what it is.

  29. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:51 am:

The thing about Jordan and those like him is that he wants to attack and blast others without having to take the heat himself. If you talk, he tries to shout you down. Jordan and others are cheap hucksters and cowards. The way they are trying to thwart justice is sick.

  30. - Appears - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:55 am:

And the taxpayers are on the hook for this little show. Yeah, this “committee” is all about helping us citizens.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 10:57 am:

===A Republican hasn’t gotten 20% of the vote that I’m aware of . They don’t live in Chicago in any significant numbers. It is what it is.===

Explain NY or LA in that framing.

Sometimes it’s about the politics, not the simple thought to them.

To - ChicagoBars -comment elsewhere on Jordan,

My shocked face that’s there’s a funder tonight after the circus…

    Vallas got 47.84 percent.

  34. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 11:05 am:

    ===Vallas got 47.84 percent.===

That’s the framing, and look at NY, LA, they have had Republican styled pols.

Your first thought was to “registered”, and we don’t have any of those anywhere in Illinois, then it was city-wide… the simple thought to what you want this to be, look at what things are.

    Be well.

  35. - John Lopez - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 11:30 am:

    Nick Name: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

With the Chicago hearing now over, how would one rate the Republican members of Congress who spoke at the hearing today? Let’s leave Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan out of this mix, and focus on the following:

    Andy Biggs (AZ)
    Cliff Bentz (OR)
    Scott Fitzgerald (WI)
    Ben Cline (VA)
    Laurel Lee (FL)
    Kevin Kiley (CA)
    Matt Gaetz (FL, via ZOOM)
Mary Miller (IL, but not on Judiciary Committee)

While Miller was the most direct naming JB Pritzker & Illinois Democrats at fault for crime, the most subtle of the Republicans IMHO was Kevin Kiley, the freshman from California who’s also the youngest of the Republicans, only one under 40 today.

All of his digs were at CA Governor Gavin Newsom without ever naming him, just talking about crime in the cities across California, including references to San Francisco (where Newsom was mayor before his 2010 lieutenant governor election) at least twice.

Curious what others think of the Republicans today, including Illinois’ Mary Miller.

  36. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 11:34 am:

What a total joke and hypocrisy. Their dear leader has four indictments and 91 charges. And they defend him. They’re doing it for the racism, because Chicago has long-triggered the GOP base.

But keep it up, it really helps the ILGOP (see 2022 election results). If the ILGOP wasn’t like the Bears, stuck in a self-induced failure loop, it would tell the Goofy Caucus or any of its members to stay away from Illinois.

  37. - Ivory-billed woodpecker - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 11:35 am:

The visit may be quickly forgotten. But Jordan will pick up a couple of nice blazers on Michigan Avenue.

  38. - Rerwit - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 11:36 am:

Chicago gets a lot of federal money for law enforcement. Congress has the authority to conduct oversight on how that federal money is spent. Pretty basic stuff.
The national perception of crime in Chicago is not good and that perception is based on solid evidence that crime is up and the people responsible for comitting those crimes are not arrested or detained so they can’t committ more crime. Thats not made up. That is the stated policy in Chicago and Cook County.

  39. - Amalia - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 11:41 am:

Jordan, never took the bar. maybe a character and fitness review would have looked at the over 100 kids sexually abused in the program where he was a coach at OSU. come on Chicago reporters. ask him about that.

  40. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 11:50 am:

=== Congress has the authority to conduct oversight on how that federal money is spent. Pretty basic stuff.===

Yeah. That’s what this is all about. Right. Sure, Jan.

===based on solid evidence that crime is up and the people responsible for comitting those crimes are not arrested or detained so they can’t committ more crime.===

Perception is why the circus is in town, not the reality.

The revivalist tour has served its purpose, the circus reality is only seen by the “heathens”

“Bet Harmon and Welch are happy they took that smiley pic a few weeks back with Catanzara.” Senate President Harmon presided over the signing of the assault weapon bill with the smart remark, “See you in court.” The bill exempts police and *retired* police from prohibition on possession of assault firearms. Harmon is on the same side as the cops, not a liberal Oak Parker as he poses.

I spent a year 1 day in Ohio this summer. I’ll take Illinois any day of the week.

  45. - DTownResident - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 1:05 pm:

So what about their other cities where they have pretty much lied about crime. Look at the Gallup poll for New York and crime and how they have peddled New York as high crime and they are believed vs how Ney York Actually is. In most places the GOP bashes for crime z crimes have dropped or are better than places the GOP touts as “better” on crime

  46. - Huh? - Tuesday, Sep 26, 23 @ 2:17 pm:

“Congress has the authority to conduct oversight on how that federal money is spent.”

If only that is what the republican’ts were really going to do. The rabid reds are coming to a blue city in a blue state and what they are planning to do is light-years away from “oversight” of how federal funds are spent.
