I somehow lost track of the fact that today is Mardi Gras. Not much I can do to celebrate that, but it is also Paczki Day, so I may head to the bakery later to increase my calorie count…
Enjoy your trip to the bakery. About all we have in my part of rural West Central is WalMart brand donuts, which are conveniently packaged in a box that says it contains Paczki.
May this Lent bring renewal to our American Spirit of doing good, and doing good trouble as needed.
I’m making jambalaya for dinner. And listening to WWOZ all day.

Why write a newsletter chastising politicos for having some misguided views of self importance related to the mafia code of honor and then in the SAME week write an article saying hey, these things happen, Goodfellas amirite? - essentially endorsing the same system that was so frowned upon in todays Fax. The author seems confused. That’s what’s on my mind
Henry Hill: Seems to me the column comments are synchronized — only one of them is sardonic.

“I mean, I get it. This is Democratic Party “family business.” Sometimes, things just gotta be done.”
That’s sarcasm? I read it as an understanding of what the politicians were doing with their piers. Not at all a condemnation. Maybe clarify snark in a published weekly news column?
Attempted to write an article asking my fellow Southern Illinoisans to show more of Christ’s love on the issue of immigration, and some of the responses have been quite cruel. I don’t expect us to agree fully, but I wish we could be kind.
Just think of those responses as “robo-calls” from the unthinking. A lot of the call-and-response, oppositional words we hear today are not well reasoned. Too many (including me) are attuned to search for reasons to speak, rather than learning to listen and reason. But the truth remains that the solution is always found in some central place.
As an educator, I try hard not to get trapped in obsessing over anger when my own words bring out anger in others. I hope your article moves the causes of immigrants forward where you live.
Had to change my Valentine’s Day dinner plans around to celebrate tonight instead of on Ash Wednesday when my love can’t have steak. Hope everyone has a great Mardi Gras and V Day!

Why does Chicago have neither a Mardi Gras nor a Karneval celebration? We certainly at one time had the Catholics for it.
