Having given up Twitter last fall, I’m thoroughly enjoying Bluesky social media. There is an excellent group of Illinois and Chicago people over there. It’s a good Twitter replacement. It’s fun and people are nice. Come on over.
(I hope this is Illinois enough.)

When those cicadas get going in one of the chorus songs, it’s really quite amazing. Entire trees pulsing with sound that gets louder and softer in 5 second rolling waves of coordinated noise.
I heard a few cicadas in the last couple days in a forested area next to my workplace. Even there though it is only a few of them. I know for a fact though that this section of forest isn’t particularly old though since it was all grass as recently as the 70s or so. (I have a postcard showing it as a big green lawn.) I’m going to go for a walk at the local state park this weekend to see if I can hear some more before they go away for another 17 years.
Congrats to the Illinois winner of the latest $560 million megamillions jackpot. And congrats to state budgeteers getting an extra $27 million (if my math is right) to play with.
I can hear the cicadas in the middle of the night. through closed windows with the AC on (it’s a very quiet kind of ac) how much longer?

Thanks for reminding me of BlueSky, Marie. I left Twitter a little over a year ago, and I do miss a many of the Chicago-centric accounts. Will check BlueSky out again.
As my wife and I prepare for our upcoming move back to Chicago from the South, I am eternally grateful the White Sox exist to make the Cubs’ current struggles not seem so drastic.
I second Marie’s comment about Bluesky. It’s very pleasant over there, and I hope that reliable news sources will continue to migrate. I only go back to Twitter to check if a specific account has posted something time-sensitive — usually government or quasi-government accounts, which don’t seem to be on Bluesky yet. I get that cross-posting is a pain, but I feel like a need to shower after I go to the old place. Now that we have Isabel’s awesome briefings, everything Illinois-centric that I need is here except weather, transit and traffic.

Visited a local forest preserve and finally experienced a full throttle cicada performance. It was loud to say the least — quite unlike my backyard.
