Question of the day

Thursday, Aug 8, 2024 - Posted by Isabel Miller

* Governor Pritzker invited Lee Enterprise Reporter Brenden Moore up for a “peace offering” after officially opening the Illinois State Fair

This is a peace offering to those who like ketchup on their corn dogs as as wrong as you may be, but as Brenden Moore often says, this is about freedom of choice, so you may make your own choice.

* Moore chose ketchup…

* Moore is infamous for his love of ketchup

The Question: What’s your favorite food at the State Fair?

An alternating stream of corn dogs and ribeye sandwiches.

  2. - JS Mill - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:09 am:

    Corn and corn dogs.

=Moore is infamous for his love of ketchup…=

More like FAMOUS. I like ketchup on my hot dogs along with mustard.

Anyone with a problem with that can name the time and place…and I will have the finest ketchup for you to try so you can see the error of your ways.

  3. - Alton Sinkhole - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:10 am:

Dang, I always liked Brenden - goes to show you really can never know a person ;)

  4. - George Ryan Reynolds - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:11 am:

The pork chop stick wrapped in bacon is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy.

The deep fried Oreos I had a couple years ago may well still be in my stomach, slowly digesting like Boba Fett in the Sarlaac back in the day.

  5. - Occasionally Moderated - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:13 am:

I’m also gratified to learn that I am 100% in agreement with Brenden Moore on a topic that matters.

    Ketchup lovers unite!

  6. - Cool Papa Bell - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:18 am:

Vose dog with ketchup is hard to beat.

I don’t eat korn dogs any other time of the year. They simply aren’t as good as what you get at Vose.

And I love the pork burger at the Pork Patio. A great sandwich.

  7. - Donnie Elgin - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:20 am:

Illinois has a rich Ketchup history - Brooks used to be made in Collinsville - and “The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle”, an old water tower still stands just south of town.

  8. - Bentoh's - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:20 am:

my experience has been that the pork chop never disappoints, shake ups can vary by vendor but always a good call and dairy barn cream puffs are always good. the donuts and taffy are fun to watch being made.

  9. - Frida's boss - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:26 am:

The various corn dogs are great, we try multiple locations to compare.
There used to be a meat parfait-pork, brisket, and mashed potatoes with gravy all layered. Didn’t see last year.

  10. - Norseman - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:32 am:

Corn dogs, Tom Thumb donuts, Dairy Barn chocolate shake and elephant ears.

Ketchup and mustard on my corn dog.

  11. - Michelle Flaherty - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:33 am:

Deep-fried snickers in Prairie Farms soft service for the win.

  12. - Excitable Boy - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:37 am:

Millers corn dog with ketchup and mustard. Far superior to Vose.

  13. - flea - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:37 am:

honey ice cream at the beekeepers association exhibit in the Illinois building.

  14. - Observation - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:39 am:

Vose’s dogs are good, but I’m more of a Cozy Dog fan (with ketchup, of course). I worked at the local Cozy Dog restaurant some 50 years ago so I have some sweat equity in the brand.

  15. - South of Sherman - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:41 am:

Corn dog, with ketchup and ketchup alone.

But at the State Fair, nothing beats the Cheese on a Stick.

  16. - So_Ill - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 11:48 am:

Brenden is a great guy, but this is inexcusable.

  17. - walker - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 12:00 pm:

Pork chop on a stick appeals to both my mouth and my sense of the absurd.

  18. - OneMan - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 12:05 pm:

I’m going to go with the ribeye sandwich; my wife scores some taffy every time we go…

  19. - Benniefly2 - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 12:06 pm:

I am an elephant ear guy, myself. I normally get some soft serve at the dairy barn as well.

  20. - This is ridiculous - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 12:11 pm:

    Norseman speaks truth.

  21. - Give Us Barabbas - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 12:29 pm:

Pork chop on a stick is the best money you’ll spend on the fairgrounds. I miss the Ray’s lemonade shakeup stand because their lemon/ orange combo was the most refreshing drink I’ve ever had on the fairgrounds. The honey ice cream in the senior building is amazing but has been unavailable three years in a row. Sure hope they have some this year.

  22. - @misterjayem - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 12:45 pm:

Ketchup on a corn dog is a child’s condiment on a child’s food.

“What’s your favorite food at the State Fair?”

    A corn dog with ketchup.

    – MrJM

  23. - H-W - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:00 pm:

We like to eat our way around the world at the village. No favorite there. All are equal there.

  24. - Give Us Barabbas - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:02 pm:

The Chicago dog really already has tomatoes on it and the other toppings like relish give a balance between sweet and savory. That’s why ketchup is redundant for a Chicago dog and makes the whole thing too sweet. The corn dog is a different situation and I have no objections to ketchup on that, any more than I would object to it on French Fries. The corn dog is more closely related to fries in a sense.

  25. - Ex Journo - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:12 pm:

I am so sick of this debate. It was funny for a bit but god can we please let it go

  26. - BC - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:14 pm:

I’m completely agnostic on this. Springfield and Chicago have different food cultures, which places state fair corn dogs outside of the jurisdiction of the Chicago ketchup police.

  27. - wildcat12 - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:24 pm:

Mini donuts. While I enjoy ketchup on my hot dog, it is incorrect on a corn dog.

  28. - twowaystreet - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:27 pm:

==Anyone with a problem with that can name the time and place…and I will have the finest ketchup for you to try so you can see the error of your ways.==

Noon August 9th. On the east bank of the mustard-rio river in Ketchupisgrossville

  29. - clec dcn - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:41 pm:

Pork Chop on a stick it cannot get better unless you down it with some good beer.

  30. - Donny - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 1:45 pm:

    Funnel cake!

  31. - Baloneymous - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 2:17 pm:

Pork chop on a stick or a pork burger are probably my favorites. 17th St BBQ is a must but I think it’s better at DuQuoin. I can’t remember if Springfield has those giant fried pork tenderloins or if that is just at DuQuoin, but those are amazing.

Jerk or curry chicken at Jamaican booth in the village is great. Sweet corn, watermelon and apple cider slushie at farmer’s market tent for a lighter albeit sugary alternative. And those ribbon fries with cheese sauce are hard to beat.

  32. - Lurker - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 2:26 pm:

Vose corn dog (no other will do) with ketchup.
And the fries from that great place that I forget the name (they only sale fries)

  33. - Josh Evans - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 2:28 pm:

Mini donuts, pulled pork, ribeye sandwiches, Voses corn dogs, jerk chicken, pollinator, dairy barn shake, then a few blood vessel stints.

  34. - Brad Peters - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 2:35 pm:

Excitable Boy; don’t forget to get a lemon shakeup to go with that Miller’s Corn dog.

The thing that smells great is the Italian sausage cooking with Green Peppers and Onions; tastes great too.

  35. - Lurker - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 2:41 pm:

Side note that I learned as chief of staff for Dept of Ag:
The only seasoning they put on the pork chop on a stick is Riley’s all-purpose seasoning. This is all I use now when I grill, and I get rave reviews

  36. - Ms. KJP - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 3:19 pm:

Thank you, Donnie Elgin. As someone born in the shadow of the Brooks Catsup Bottle, I love ketchup on my hotdog, and I don’t care who knows it.

  37. - Frida's boss - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 4:15 pm:

I forgot the swirl ice cream cone in the dairy barn is fantastic.

  38. - Langhorne - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 4:20 pm:

Not sure it’s still there, but my favorite was always shrimp on a stick. Second place ribeye.

  39. - Dotnonymous x - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 4:31 pm:

    Funnel cake…hold the Ketchup.

  40. - JS Mill - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 4:59 pm:

=Noon August 9th. On the east bank of the mustard-rio river in Ketchupisgrossville=

    Touche. :)

  41. - Interim Retiree - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 5:12 pm:

Pork Burgers are the best - they really know how to grill & season them.

  42. - Brenden Moore - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 5:28 pm:

==I am so sick of this debate. It was funny for a bit but god can we please let it go==

To quote Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, “Things just got out of hand.” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But to the question, when I’m not eating a Vose corn dog with ketchup, a sandwich from the Ribeye Corral in the Commodities Pavilion will do. Also a big elephant ear guy!

  43. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 5:34 pm:

    ===Pork Burgers are the best===

Been eating them since I was a kid going to the Iroquois County Fair. Love them with pickles and mustard. I love them so much I sponsored a table in the Pork Patio. It’s still there.

  44. - Jibba - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 8:48 pm:

Been eating the honey ice cream almost annually since I was so small that I couldn’t use the wooden spoon very well. I still remember the frustration as the hard-frozen thing melted enough to eat, so so slowly. That has been like 55 years.

  45. - Pot calling kettle - Thursday, Aug 8, 24 @ 10:53 pm:

Mini donuts & 17th St BBQ
