The word ‘voters’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting in these ‘voter confidence’ stories

Thursday, Oct 31, 2024 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Two recent nothing-burger stories about a few minor errors from the Center Square…

The first story is about a mistake involving a Libertarian candidate that effected 300 out of 160,000 mail-in ballots in one Cook County precinct. The ballots were already remailed. The story also includes a minor glitch reported by McLean County GOP Chair Dennis Grundler that was corrected within a day. Just one ballot was mailed to the wrong address.

The second story is about McLean County GOP Chair Dennis Grundler reporting a minor glitch with a voting machine, causing people to put 34 ballots into lockboxes until the machine could be fixed. The piece also rehashes a minor suburban story from earlier this month.

The main take-away appears to be: “Voters = McLean County GOP Chair Dennis Grundler.”

    “Glitch”

When people say they were “hacked”, often they just mean that someone else used their device to post something to their feeds, no hacking required. I’m skeptical that all of the voting machine glitches are actually problems with the voting software/hardware and not human errors.

  2. - Siualum - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 9:10 am:

But the headline says voting machines malfunction across Illinois. Like it’s happening in all jurisdictions. I guess it sells.

  3. - Neef Jr. - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 9:13 am:

I wouldn’t believe anything Cat writes about McLean County or anywhere else. She was part of the election denying machine in McLean County and part of Insurrection Radio that organized a bus trip and was part of the January 6th happenings.

I’m kinda surprised the 2nd article didn’t mention the Kankakee County Clerk’s post about how they found out the tabulator they use will only accept 5000 votes before reaching maximum capacity. This happened on October 26th. The Clerk’s office brought in a new tabulator and voting resumed as normal. Nice to hear that more than 5,000 Kankakee County residents had voted early by that date.

  5. - Dirty Red - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 9:28 am:

TL;DR - All systems, including contingency plans, in McLean County are working as planned, which continues to baffle the County Party on the verge of losing the County Board.

When you move from election day to election season these sorts of things raise questions. It’s a brave new world.

  7. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 10:07 am:

This is part of the strategy to delegitimize elections. The goal of this stuff is undermine voter confidence. Will it work? Stay tuned.

==When you move from election day to election season==

This could have been largely deemed moot by making it national holiday.

The *only* time I’ve not voted was after commuting/working 12hrs only to be greeted by a line out the door in the cold rain at closing time.

“When you move from election day to election season these sorts of things raise questions. It’s a brave new world.”

Because the presidential election of 1960 hasn’t been fodder for Hollywood since 1960.

  10. - JS Mill - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 11:20 am:

=This is part of the strategy to delegitimize elections.=

I would add that it is to satisfy the fragile ego of one man. I wonder if these people understand the long term folly of this play? One of the reasons that the US is a safe haven for foreign investment (which is also a huge reason why the dollar is a world reserve currency) is the stable transition of power and the confidence in our elections. If this path continues, neith of my previous statements will be true and that will be horrible for the US and the world.

=Because the presidential election of 1960 hasn’t been fodder for Hollywood since 1960.=

    Also true.

  11. - Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 11:26 am:

The only reason there are “voter” confidence issues is because these people lie about fraud and then send the usual tin foil hat suspects into a frenzy. And the media doesn’t help by reporting on things that are absolute nothings. The issues of “voters” talking about fraud is because of one man and one man only and that is Donald Trump. And there are tens of millions of lunatics ready to elect him President.

  12. - Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 11:27 am:

==When you move from election day to election season these sorts of things raise questions.==

Why? There is no reason that there should be any questions just because we allow for early voting and vote by mail. You’re part of the problem if you think this should raise any questions.

  13. - Excitable Boy - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 11:32 am:

    - When you move from election day to election season these sorts of things raise questions. -

They raise questions in crackpot minds like yours that can’t learn the basics about how elections work.

  14. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 11:39 am:

Center Square has nothing on Musk, but they are both on the same page with sowing doubt on the integrity of the election.

    https://politicalwire.com/2024/10/31/election-officials-fight-elon-musks-misinformation/

It’s almost like there is some kind of vast, right-wing conspiracy, or something.

  15. - BUG - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 12:11 pm:

From the article: “In McLean County … A third party company, Modern Litho, was hired to mail out and track vote-by-mail ballots for McLean County. The company sent about 180 vote-by-mail ballots with an envelope that had a Monroe County Clerk Office’s return address printed on it. Several voters notified McLean County GOP Chair Dennis Grundler of the mistake.”

The *Republican* county clerk notified both parties of the mistake and of the fix almost immediately. And the third party was calling impacted voters directly.

Rather then try to create more distrust and confusion, they could have just shared the information they received (that’s what the Dems did).

  16. - Mason County - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 2:32 pm:

A national biometric photo ID Voting card should be required and presented when voting. Such a card would have to be applied for and would be free of charge.

Voting should be done on election day, or as Illinois allows, by in person early voting 40 days before election.

Those who are 100% homebound can be accommodated by special provisions.

All votes counted at the same time on election day.

    That’s it.

  17. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 2:38 pm:

Mason County, there are more holes in your plan than in a 5,000 pound block of Swiss cheese.

  18. - jimbo - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 2:40 pm:

==A national biometric photo ID Voting card should be required and presented when voting. Such a card would have to be applied for and would be free of charge.==

The absolute best thing about this idea is that it’s favored by the conspiracy minded who are *exactly* the same ones who would refuse it because it’s the feds and biometric

  19. - PublicServant - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 2:57 pm:

Center Square: An island of garbage in the world of politics.

  20. - God's Country - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 3:14 pm:

==A national biometric photo ID Voting card should be required and presented when voting. Such a card would have to be applied for and would be free of charge.==

Makes sense. Look how smoothly the Real ID has been implemented.

  21. - Papa2008 - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 3:23 pm:

The existence of the term “ballot harvesting” is enough for me to question voting integrity. Whether it’s done by the left or the right, it seems to be an opportunity for shenanigans.

  22. - Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 3:34 pm:

==A national biometric photo ID Voting card should be required==

Why? And biometric? Really? Are you insane? I mean, the conspiracy theorists are worried about “fraud” but tell them you’re going to collect biometric data on them and see what happens.

==Voting should be done on election day, or as Illinois allows, by in person early voting 40 days before election.==

Again, why? What is the argument against mail in ballots? There is nothing out there to suggest that mail in balloting is fraudulent to any degree.

=All votes counted at the same time on election day.==

The votes are counted on election day. It can just take a while. Why is there such a need to have the votes tabulated on election day? Would it be nice? Of course. But the fact that they may not be done has no bearing on whether the election was done correctly.

You’ve bought into the election conspiracy nonsense hook, line and sinker.

  23. - Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 3:35 pm:

==The existence of the term “ballot harvesting” is enough for me to question voting integrity.==

A “term” makes you worry? lol. If you want to show me evidence of ballot harvesting on a wide scale then by all means present that evidence.

  24. - JS Mill - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 4:02 pm:

=There is nothing out there to suggest that mail in balloting is fraudulent to any degree.=

Heck, trump used to vote by mail.

===The existence of the term “ballot harvesting” is enough for me to question voting integrity.===

If that is true I bet the term “organ harvesting” keeps you up at night.

  25. - Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 7:46 pm:

And if you and your ilk have evidence of massive voters fraud then provide it because I’m frankly tired of all the nonsense. Put up or shut up. You’re seeking a solution to a problem that does not exist. Period

  26. - Mason County - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 8:29 pm:

Wonder if my response to Demoralized will be posted?

    ummmmm

  27. - Demoralized - Thursday, Oct 31, 24 @ 8:38 pm:

You’ve laid your ignorance bare. So probably best it’s not.
