CTU president Stacy Davis Gates scolds Gov. Pritzker for expressing opinions on a ‘hyper local issue’

Tuesday, Nov 5, 2024 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Crain’s

At the local level, Pritzker said both the current and future members of the Chicago Board of Education should be “listening to the public” before making major decisions for the schools. […]

“I believe that an elected school board is what should dictate Chicago Public Schools,” he said. “Let’s put people in place before they’re making final decisions. I think, by the way, the appointed officials should also be listening to the public.”

CTU president Stacy Davis Gates, who also stopped by Manny’s, told Crain’s she doesn’t “understand a governor weighing in on a hyper local issue.”

“What I would prefer that the governor weighed in on is how 80% of our schools get librarians, how we get fully functioning sports teams that are at our elementary and high schools for fall, winter and spring,” she said. “I would also like his help in making sure that we can narrow the teaching vacancies. These are all things that we can do with the governor, and I look forward to his partnership on things that he can help us with.”

Well unlike MBJ, JB actually answers the questions he’s asked. Can’t fault the guy for answering a question he was asked.

  2. - Excitable Boy - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:08 pm:

He’s Governor of the state that includes Chicago and he’s also a Chicago resident. I’m fine with him discussing those other topics but he absolutely should have express opinions about the Chicago school board.

    Silly criticism.

  3. - harp5339 - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:11 pm:

“how we get fully functioning sports teams”

    Like soccer?

At our local high school the athletic director’s entire budget comes from ticket sales and concessions. Try that.

  4. - Nick - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:12 pm:

CTU: We demand more money from the state

Also CTU: Stop opining about the schools

    SDG - Read the room.

  8. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:20 pm:

She doesn’t understand. MBJ has made the city ungovernable. Everyone knows it. And she’s taking on Mr. Competent. Good luck.

  9. - DS - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:20 pm:

    CORE’s act is so tired.

  10. - Rahm's Parking Meter - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:24 pm:

SDG, you need to show flexibility. There is a reason you are politically radioactive in the region.

  11. - a drop in - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:26 pm:

CTU: No criticism allowed, just give us the money and go away.

  12. - DMC - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:28 pm:

maybe the citizens of Chicago should elect the head of the union as well. I think this is the last mayor that wins that has that toxic endorsement.

  13. - Chris - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:32 pm:

It’s hard to believe that something could SO quickly and thoroughly make me regret voting for the CTU endorsed Board candidate, given personal negative experiences with the viable alternative, but SDG pulled it off.

    Congrats, I guess?

Uh, whoever posted at 3:20, please find a new nickname.

Give me all the money…don’t you dare ask how I spend it or hold me accountable.

  16. - H-W - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:46 pm:

President Gates needs to chill out. Governors share opinions on issues surrounding their cities. SOP. Breathe in, breathe out.

  17. - Josh Lyman - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:48 pm:

Leave it to CTU/SDG to give “All gas, no brakes” a negative meaning.

  18. - Another Millennial - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:49 pm:

Now that the Mayor and City Hall staff are CTU, SDG has switched to JB/the GA. IF CTU candidates for school board don’t pan out it’ll be those members’ fault soon enough. Who’s next in her Burn Book?

  19. - ChrisB - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:52 pm:

Constantly badgering the Governor while your hand is out asking for a donation is a pretty bold strategy.

Let’s see how this plays out, Cotton.

  20. - NotRich - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:56 pm:

Pretty bold coming from a resident of Indiana

  21. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:56 pm:

I’m very confused. The Chicago school board is a “hyper local issue” but the Chicago schools aren’t?

More important, though: what did they each order at Manny’s?

  22. - Bebe - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 3:59 pm:

Picking a fight with a popular and competent governor is such great political strategy.

  23. - low level - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 4:03 pm:

==Picking a fight with a popular and competent governor is such great political strategy.==

    Exactly. Makes no sense.

  24. - TNR - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 4:06 pm:

What is she upset about? He offered vague platitudes. “Listen to public” isn’t “they should consider consolidating under-enrolled schools” or “they shouldn’t borrow money.”

More evidence CTU is strategically spoiling for a fight with JB.

  25. - Amalia - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 4:08 pm:

wait, so she wants him to leave the interim board alone. so why is she working for a candidate in each district? why spend CTU money on that when it could be spent, say, sponsoring sports teams in schools.

  26. - NorthsideNoMore - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 4:11 pm:

The last time I checked the Exec branch, AKA the Governor creates the Budget. Criticizing the one guy that can help Great strategy. Goes to show the CTU arrogance. Their hand picked messenger has proven to be up to the task. Uggh.

“What I would prefer that the president of the Chicago Teachers Union lives in Illinois and sends their kids to public schools.”

  28. - Juice - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 4:39 pm:

SDG: The Governor should not be weighing in on how the board of education is managing the district because that is too small a detail for him to be worried about.

Also SDG: The Governor should be more focused on how each neighborhood school has a soccer team.

  29. - JoanP - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 4:48 pm:

Anonymous @ 3:56 pm was me.

  30. - Annon3 - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 5:04 pm:

SDG knows exactly what she is up to, however, it remains to be seen how badly she over plays her hand.

  31. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 5:25 pm:

Gates is a hypocrite pure and simple. She wants the governor to fix hyper local problems that she and the CTU mayor are not willing to fix and keep his trap shut about other hyper local issues.

Gates should be ignored, she is not a seriouos person.

  32. - Leslie K - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 5:28 pm:

    What JS Mill said.

  33. - thisjustinagain - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 5:31 pm:

CTU/SDG refuse to face any facts, while continuing to make unreasonable demands. Johnson must be SO proud of them.

  34. - low level - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 5:42 pm:

==Gates should be ignored, she is not a serious person.==

Absolutely spot on. Im going to have to use that last statement moving forward. She def is not serious. A first year poli sci student would be better.

  35. - Second Verse - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 6:58 pm:

Stacey should be quietly hoping the rest of the state’s voters do not see the actual building utilization numbers, excess staffing numbers and reduced student count over the last 10 years.

No member of state government could consider additional revenue in that environment. It would be political suicide.

Given that situation, J.B. has been quite generous in his comments. He could sink your ship with a couple of well chosen sentences.

Be glad you are supposed to be on the same side. Otherwise, you could have some real problems.

  36. - Walter Mitty - Tuesday, Nov 5, 24 @ 8:14 pm:

The teachers union is so concerned about the local issues? Why not close the under used schools to fund some of the issues they have listed?
