HGOPs whacked for opposing lame duck session
Thursday, Nov 21, 2024 - Posted by Rich Miller
* House Speaker Chris Welch and Senate President Don Harmon have both told their chambers to be prepared to return January 2-7 for a lame duck session. As you will recall, Gov. Pritzker and the two Democratic legislative leaders have talked about “Trump-proofing” the state, starting in lame duck session. In response, here’s House GOP Leader McCombie…
Following the adjournment of legislative veto session in the Illinois House, House Minority Leader Tony McCombie issued the following statement:
“We do not need more time for out-of-touch Democrats to dream up harmful legislation. We need bipartisan legislation that focuses on the issues Illinois families care about most. Until the Democrat majority can get their priorities in order, the House Republicans oppose a Lame Duck session.”
* I asked Speaker Welch’s spokesperson Jaclyn Driscoll for a response…
House Republicans oppose affordable, accessible health care. They oppose protecting our environment and reproductive care. They oppose public education, child care assistance, common-sense and lifesaving gun reform, and affordable housing. They’ve voted against making college more affordable and an increase in MAP grant funding. They oppose labor rights. They’ve opposed multiple balanced budgets that returned our state to A-level credit. It isn’t completely surprising to learn that House Republicans now also oppose coming to work altogether. Thankfully, Democrats remain committed to delivering lasting results for all of Illinois and continuing the people’s work in January.
Discuss.

The House GOP could at least grandstand for that stuff during a lame-duck session.

It’s not a shock that so-called “constitutional conservatives” misunderstand a basic tenet of the constitution: terms of office.

HGOP position is understandable. Illinois roads can be nasty in early January.

==Democrat majority==
Aside from this being just more whining by the Republicans I don’t have an ounce of respect for people who who say Democrat instead of Democratic. Grow up.

If a super-minority caucus doesn’t show up for session, does anyone notice? Asking for a friend.

What exactly does she have in mind and we can go from there?
==Democrat majority==
The correct phrase would be “Democratic Majority” but the operative word is “majority”. Of which, they failed to make any gains. Talk about being Out of Touch…

Does anyone have the exact number of legislators that are truly lame ducks?

===legislators that are truly lame ducks? ===
There aren’t many, and at least one, Rep. Flowers, hasn’t shown up for much of the year.

Shucks, we were hoping the Whacks would be given a chance to vote against the resolutions that question the wisdom of nominating some of the screwballs put up for cabinet jobs — even though Gaetz was tossed overboard this a.m.
Does this mean the Speaker can just bank the per diem and travel cash since the GOPies are opposed?

To the point of how people refer to a major party, I propose that the General Assembly amend the statutes to reference the MAGA GOP out of respect to our nation’s greatest president and Illinois’ home hero Abraham Lincoln. The party in existence today bears no resemblance to his GOP.

Thanks Rich for the answer
I guess that you could have a lame duck session- without any lame duck legislators. - LOL

We learned alot more about how critical no show jobs are to the Illinois Democratic Party but I didn’t know they tolerated no show legislators too

Hey Anonymous before you make your drive by comments try to read the bold type.

I’ve always found it odd how journalists continually to refer to the party as the “GOP”, without using a similar nickname for Democratic officials. The term “GOP” has never appeared on a ballet and we should tie their actions to their actual affiliation, not a century-old nickname.
Has there ever been a poll to see how many voters even know they are the same thing?
- Big Dipper - Thursday, Nov 21, 24 @ 6:26 pm:
Seems like more than a nickname to them.

It is just a name for days right at the end of session, so of course you can have it even if very few legislators are lame ducks (aka ending their last session in the GA). Turns out until a new session of the GA starts the old GA can still pass bills if it wants to.
