Question of the day: Golden Horseshoe Awards

Friday, Dec 6, 2024 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The 2024 Golden Horseshoe Award for Best Senate Democratic Legislative Assistant/District Office Manager goes to Thera Bond

Doris Turner

My legislative assistant, Thera Bond, is the absolute best ever!!! She is much more than a LA; she is a goodwill ambassador, a liaison to the community, and the person who always cuts through the red tape and any roadblocks to get the answer and problem solve for our constituents. She goes above and beyond with a smile never complaining; just doing! I can honestly say - I could not be an effective legislator without her!!!

* The 2024 Golden Horseshoe Award for Best Senate Republican Legislative Assistant/District Office Manager goes to Dana Hooven

Senator Fowler is constantly on the go working hard for the people of downstate. His District Director Dana Hooven is ever present ensuring his initatives are completed with excellence and constituent relations are successfully satisfied. She is a consistent face in the community and a great asset to the people of Southern Illinois in one of the most vast districts in the state. I’m not sure how anyone can keep up with the busyiness and impact of Dale, but Dana makes it look like a breeze!

Congrats to both of our winners!

* Today’s categories…

Best House Democratic Legislative Assistant/District Office Manager

Best House Republican Legislative Assistant/District Office Manager

Try your best to nominate in both categories. It adds more weight to your case. Also, as always, make sure to explain your nominations or they won’t count. Thanks.

* Y’all have so far contributed more than $14,000 to help Lutheran Social Services of Illinois buy Christmas presents for foster kids. Thanks! But let’s keep it going. Please click here and give whatever you can and help put smiles on the faces of foster kids this holiday season.

  1. - The Spider on the 2nd Floor of the Stratton - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 12:19 pm:

HDem LA: Jack Thorndyke who is the only staffer in the House with an MSW, and is effective in handling all 4 of his Representatives he works with in the crazy times of the spring legislative session.

  2. - Do your duty - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 1:17 pm:

HDems: Liz Moody is the most consistent and helpful LAs on the capitol complex. She is a resource to her fellow staff and balances two very busy members of leadership. She is a problem solver and goes above and beyond.

  3. - Roll Tide - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 1:31 pm:

HGOP- April Roberts, one of the best they have and is professional in every aspect, even her sense of humor. If you are not sure who to turn to, April has the answer. Or knows who does.

HDem- Caitlin Anderson: She is one of 4 or 5 current LC staffers with a Masters. Has to be one of the most organized staffers on the 2nd floor. Because she needs to be with all her duties. These include 4 members that worked her with their combined 70 plus bills, all of which Caitlin stayed on top of. She is the support staffer for the HDem Womens Caucus which is the largest sub-caucus. And she’s in charge of team tasked with Identifying, producing materials for, and distributing information on all events and holidays taking place through the state…. to all 78 district offices….on a monthly basis.

  4. - North of I 80 - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 1:33 pm:

HDEM District Office Manager: Megan Broderick. Always helpful and responsive!

  5. - TheUpperRoom - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 2:25 pm:

House Dems - Liz Moody for Reps Hoffman and Manley. Easily the most effective communicator on LA staff when it comes to simply getting things done, little to no wait time and always with a smile and professional attitude. You will get a response or answer from her, not a runaround or a long wait with no communication.

  6. - Rep - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 3:51 pm:

I have worked with multiple legislative coordinators in my time in the House and while I haven’t been assigned to Caitlin for a long time, I have been so impressed with her organization, pro active approach, and energetic work ethic!

  7. - Interested Advocate - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 4:46 pm:

As someone who has recently seen Liz Moody’s responsiveness and capacity to wrangle multiple leaders’ changing schedules for meetings, I second Do Your Duty’s motion!

  8. - JaysCoffeeCup - Friday, Dec 6, 24 @ 6:50 pm:

HDems – Liz Moody. Liz manages to balance multiple jobs and roles for two very busy members of House leadership. She handles their daily schedules, legislative agendas, the constant traffic to and from Rep. Hoffman’s office, and still remembers how each legislator likes their lunch. She is also a huge resource for other legislators, staff and lobbyists and always makes time for people even when they aren’t even there to see her members. Liz is a joy to work with and to know.

HGOP- Bree Steinacher. Bree manages an incredibly busy Ryan Spain, including his scheduling both in and out of Springfield. She is incredibly responsive, never fails to return a call or email, and is always super kind even when she’s telling you no. She is a fantastic part of the HGOP LA Team.

  9. - Yung Donald - Saturday, Dec 7, 24 @ 9:31 pm:

HGOP - Fisher Overstreet. It’s tough to keep up with Dave Severin’s schedule, but Fisher does well. When Severin is double booked, he covers events on Severin’s behalf and is very effective in doing so. He is well respected in the District. When Severin goes to an event solo, the first question is “Where’s Fisher?”

  10. - Witness - Monday, Dec 9, 24 @ 10:05 am:

House Dems - Stephanie Miller. While she’s not assigned to one specific member, she oversees most of the staff on 2nd floor of Stratton and works with all members of the HDem caucus. Spend 10 minutes in that area on a session day and you’ll see that she’s the go-to person for pretty much everything and everyone as members, lobbyists, and staff all gravitate towards her. She goes above and beyond the basic job duties and always conducts herself with grace and impeccable style.
