NIU Northern Star dusted off its printing press to deliver a special 16-page edition devoted to compensation of NIU employees. Since the Star has only published an online version of the paper for several years, it’s a puzzle as to how they made the extraordinary decision to do this one this way. (Perhaps not so coincidentally, President Freeman gives the State of the University address today.) https://northernstar.info/flipbook/spring-2025-salary-issue/#1
Thanks for posting that tribute Rich - making duets with Donny Hathaway again. That’s Illinois-centric - music is universal after all.
For Illinois news, I’m just glad the weather has broke and its already a lovely day at the Statehouse.

Rep. Mike Bost had promised a telephone town hall for last night. Preregistration was required. With no further instructions I assumed there would be a call-back to join. Neither I nor others I’ve talked to received a call, so we assumed it wasn’t happening. This morning I called his office, which told me the town hall was held, but there was a glitch in calling people. I understand glitches, but everything makes me skeptical in this environment. I had already assumed people who would be allowed to ask questions would be pre-screened. Did anyone here participate in the town hall? I’d appreciate your take.
I was truly saddened yesterday to learn of former Governor Edgar’s serious illness. Our best wishes to him and his family. A good and decent public servant.
As a longtime constituent of Representative Present, and by that, I mean going back to the early 90’s, I can assure you that Bost wasn’t going to take any questions that required the modicum of thought.
Oh, and the moment he thinks he might have to deal with an angry voter that sound you just heard was him exiting through the back door.
Trump just purged the joint chiefs and top JAG’s. Most Democratic Senators voted yesterday not to advance JD Vance’s college friend for Secretary of the Army.
Rich, pursuant to the calls for Section 230 repeal, the EU definition of Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) might be relevant — it specifically takes aim at those big tech companies that can control worldwide discourse, while allowing anything smaller than 45M users/month is allowed to continue under the status quo.
Not that we have any kind of competent or educated tech-related rulemaking happening in this country, I know it’s a pipe dream.

Anyone know what all the hubbub was about outside of the Stratton yesterday? HAZMAT was there with a bunch of fire truck and SoSPD incident command.

Senator Durbin voted with the Republicans.
He’s reminding me more and more of Alan Dixon.
