Wall interviews Pritzker

Tuesday, May 20, 2025 - Posted by Rich Miller

* ABC7’s Craig Wall interviewed Gov. JB Pritzker yesterday

A recent report showed that state revenue projections will be half a billion dollars less than expected.

Could that impact the low-level asks that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson made in his recent trip to Springfield?

“We felt like those were things that the legislature should take into account. I’ve said that to members of the legislature. So, we’ll have to see how it all works out. But it’s a tight budget year. So, nobody’s going to get everything they want,” Pritzker said. “There’s two weeks left, and a lot of work seem to go into it, and I’ll be, you know, in the room, or my people will be in the room. We’ll figure it out.” […]

Pritzker said he’ll make a decision on whether to run for a third term as governor by July, when the Cook County Democratic Party meets to slate candidates.

“Well, some of it is personal, right? I have a family. They’ve been hyper-tolerant, and, you know, on board with my being governor for now, you know, one and a half terms,” Pritzker said.

The governor said he’s not worried about third-term perils.

“I think that that commentary can apply to any day as governor. There are perils, right? And who knew? I’ll just give you one of them: that we would face an international pandemic. Who knew that we would have a migrant crisis?” he said.

Go read the rest and then discuss.

Who knew we would have a migrant crisis?

What did he think would happen when at least 8 million people entered into the country?

    A) The “crisis” was not caused by immigrants entering the country, but by Texas putting the immigrants on busses and dropping them unannounced at the station.

    B) Estimates are 5000 people attempt to cross the border illegally each day, and 4000 are aprehended. So no, not 8 million. More like 1.4 million.

    C) That said, the number of undocumented immigrants in the US has been flat for 2 decades, about 10.5 million. It tends to rise when the US economy is growing like it did under Biden, in response to labor demand.

I think he deep down knows he will not be president or a cabinet member following the 2028 election and therefore he will run for a third term as governor.

US foreign born population reached a record 47.8 million in 2023

An increase of 1.6 million from 2022

There were at least 11 million unauthorized immigrants in 2022

They all weren’t bussed from Texas to Chicago

    False data.

Pew Research has accurate data on immigration over the past three decades. In 2005, there were 11.0 M undocumented immigrants in the United States. Since then, the number of undocumented immigrants has remained at 11.0 M.

There is no invasion. The number of undocumented immigrants has remained the same through Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, and (probably) Trump.

    False data?

    The graph is crystal clear

    The numbers do not lie.

Border encounters are not the same as people entering (and staying) in the country.

  8. - H-W - Tuesday, May 20, 25 @ 12:11 pm:

    @ Johnny B

Let’s start with your first assertion: “8 million people entered the country.”

False inference as presented. You suggest Gov. Pritzker should have been alarmed because people “8 million people entered” the United States. What you ignore is that the number of undocumented resident immigrants has not changed at all. There is no invasion, there is no new crisis.

Changing the source of your information (and the nature of the data you provide in this new link) does not change the fact that there has been no change in the number of undocumented, resident immigrants in the United States since 2005. In addition, the new data point (number of encounters) is not related to the the number of undocumented residents. Heightened border surveillance can produce more encounters. But doing so has not changed the number of residents. It has neither increased nor decreased the number of undocumented, resident immigrants for the past two decades.

The number of undocumented immigrants in the United States has remained at 11 M through two decades. That clearly indicates that as many are leaving as are arriving, and that this circulation pattern has persisted for two decades.

Suggesting that 8 million have entered the U.S. is an assertion on your part that this is a new number, and that it somehow represents a new crisis. That is a false inference and/or assertion on your part. The number of undocumented workers has remained constant over time. Period. End of story.

If you wish to assert we need to get rid of immigrants in order to reduce that number, say so. Be honest and say you do not like immigrants. But suggesting a new crisis exists because (a) more are coming, and (b) more are staying is a false assertion.

If you prefer to assert that the “quality” of immigrants today is different that the “quality” of immigrants in the past, say so. Give that argument a try. (That would be false too). But in any case, your allusion toward a new crisis is false.

People come to America consistently. We have maintained a population that historically includes 11 M undocumented immigrants for two decades. Doing so has not bankrupted us, nor has it lead to more crime (just the opposite).

He is a truly great Governor. Here is to 4 (or more) terms like Jim Thompson.

Per the US Census, foreign-born as % of US population reached 15.6% in 2024.
Last time it reached comparable levels (14.8%) was 1890

=What’s your point? My wife is “foreign born.”=

So is mine. What of it?

    Also, @Thomas Paine +1

There was a time (for about 240 years) when the fact that people wanted to come to the United States was a national point of pride. We considered ourselves the land of opportunity. Now? It makes me sad that the folks who wrap themselves in the flag and all these catchy pseudo patriotic names don’t even know what Americanism and American Exceptionalism really mean.

=== There were at least 11 million unauthorized immigrants in 2022

There have consistently been 10-11 million undocumented immigrants in the US since 2007.

Anything thats been going on for 18 years is not a “crisis” by most people’s definition.

The only “crisis” was manufactured by Abbott and the Republicans putting people on buses and airplanes.

They are planning to remove the plaque that says “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. No longer applicable to America.
