Rich, Most Cardinal fans were watching Palin avoid answering questions last night. Did the Cubs win or lose? Oops, now i see that they lost, sorry about that!
Don’t give up hope yet Rich, funny things happen in October
(and sometimes some not so funny things).
You gotta believe!

I disagree Rich. No one should ever forget that Flaming Pile of Garbage on display last night in Wrigley. For the Cubs fans, this is the karma train catching up for their collective sins, and the baseball gods are being truly savage in their retribution (we need not make a petty list, but needless to say there have been a number of real Stay Classy moments coming from the crowd this year). I understand the basic human desire to want to ignore the tragedy, the massacre, but the only way to heal is from confrontation.
As for the White Sox, Vazquez sucked, but that was hardly an unexpected occurrence with the way he’s pitched of late (fortunately that might be the only game he might get to start the rest of the playoffs). The Sox got to rest their bullpen after surviving their qualifying gauntlet, which was the biggest worry I had just in even considering being at this point (when thinking about the possible scenarios last weekend). I’m not about to get onto a ledge over losing 1 game. Unlike Cubs fans, we Sox fans aren’t rattled quite that easily, and while they were already seeing doom before the first game was even complete, I am fully cognizant that we have much more to play.
Once again, I cannot state it enough, Flaming Pile of Garbage.
And agreed with Baines. Why start Javier in the first game? Ugh.
With Buehrle, I can only assume the heavens will part, the called strikes will be plentiful, the RBIs will be multiply and we’ll beat the Devil Rays, or whatever they’re called these days.
I don’t know what will give the Cubs reason for hope, though …
B4P and others, I’m not giving up. And I know Sox fans aren’t giving up. We still have a shot.
Starting our worst pitcher yesterday puzzled me, but I figure Ozzie figured that the Rays would be hugely fired up for the team’s first ever playoff game, so victory was unlikely. Still, the bottom of the 7th was infuriating. Kicking dirt on the plate and calling out the pitcher? What the heck was that? Oy. I’d rather just forget yesterday.
Go Sox.
- He Makes Ryan Look Like a Saint - Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 7:59 am:
Well, Javy was the only one who was properly rested. If they would’ve started Buehrle on 3 days rest again, I think it would’ve been robbing Peter to pay Paul: either taking the gas out of his arm, or restricting his ability to pitch on 3 days rest again. If this goes to Game 5, Buehrle will do 3 days rest, I would bet.
I’m holding judgement until the Sox game is over tonight. If we get the win and head home tied up, then I believe yesterday’s events are free reign for criticism.
Also, I think Ozzie should have started Richard. Kid looked good in his last start against the Yankees, and Tampa doesn’t hit as well against lefties. But now we’ve got our three best starters left, so fortunately, today is a new day.
I kind of feel like Kevin Bacon in Animal House this morning. I’m trying to believe that “all is well” while my hopes of seeing the Cubs play in the World Series are being trampled.
You know what doesn’t help the Scrubs? When their fans boo them for striking out (e.g. Soriano in the 7th) No class whatsoever. I tell you one thing, that would never happen in St. Louis. The only player we’ve seriosuly booed has been Izzy and that was justifiably after his 17th blown save.
I consider the Cubs as an educational tool.
Their history helped me teach my son to count to 100.
Now it looks like we’ll be able to keep using them as we move on to 101, 102, 103, 104 …
That was Thursday. This is Friday. When my medication wears off, I’m going to get out of bed and carpe diem. And 10 minutes after that, I’m going back to bed.
Cub fans were looking to throw in the towel from the first pitch. There’s no curse, just a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The Sox paid the price for paying too many extra meaningful games at the end of the season. We had to abuse our pitching staff just to make the postseason and the price we paid was giving away a Vasquez game. The downside is that we pretty much had to give away a game in a five game series, that’s really tough, but the upside of what we went through in the last week is that we should be a lot more poised than the Cubs were in game 2 last night.
Buehrle is a contact pitcher, pitching in a roller rink to a speed and contact team. If we are going to get it done today we are going to need defense, maybe even moreso than hitting and pitching. That and Kazmir’s a strikeout pitcher so we have to get after him early in the count.
The cubs laid an egg. That has to be the worse major league baseball game I have ever witnessed (anyway the first 7 innings since I went to bed after that). There is no other way to explain it than a huge choke job. I’m not giving up yet, but if they play like they did the first two games, they might as well not even catch the plane to LA.
As for the the White Sox, they just go beat by a better team. No shame in that.
What can you expect? It’s the Cubs!! What that old saying? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again epecting different results.
They’re calling us the Flubs after an embarassing Game Two.
Now it’s off to LA where we’ll make the Dodgers feel blue.
- James the Intolerant - Friday, Oct 3, 08 @ 9:51 am:
I think the Sox figured they almost had to “sacrifice” game 1 with another name I will never say again to give Buehrle another day of rest. If I knew Tampa was so bad (a .500 team) against lefties I would’ve started Clayton Richard. Oz is too loyal, sit Ken Griffey too, put Anderson in center. CF is not a position we need a big bat from, as if Griffey has a big bat, we need defense. Hate to show my age, but Ken Landis was a great CF and I think he hit about .240 for the Sox. I still have faith in the Sox.
Cubs, sad, but I need a Sox win before I can gloat.
We all know the Cubs would spit in the eye of destiny if they every progressed past the first round. The divisional championship IS the World Series for the Cubs.
The Sox are now held to a higher standard, and they blew it. Rich, after silently enduring your relentless Cubs bashing for months on end (and while I really do wish BOTH of our teams the best), I can’t help but smile a bit right now.
My White Sox got spanked. Cubs got spanked. And not the kind of spanking I like. Not a good day for Chicago. Like my mother ALWAYS says, AND THIS TOO SHALL PASS!
