This just in… Kirk won’t support Trump, calls him “un-American” - Duckworth asks what took so long

Tuesday, Jun 7, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From US Sen. Mark Kirk…

“I have spent my life building bridges and tearing down barriers–not building walls. That’s why I find Donald Trump’s belief that an American-born judge of Mexican descent is incapable of fairly presiding over his case is not only dead wrong, it is un-American.

As the Presidential campaign progressed, I was hoping the rhetoric would tone down and reflect a campaign that was inclusive, thoughtful and principled. While I oppose the Democratic nominee, Donald Trump’s latest statements, in context with past attacks on Hispanics, women and the disabled like me, make it certain that I cannot and will not support my party’s nominee for President regardless of the political impact on my candidacy or the Republican Party.

It is absolutely essential that we are guided by a commander-in-chief with a responsible and proper temperament, discretion and judgment. Our President must be fit to command the most powerful military the world has ever seen, including an arsenal of thousands of nuclear weapons. After much consideration, I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world.”

…Adding… This vote is legally meaningless because Petraeus is not registered as a write-in candidate and probably won’t ever be…

…Adding More… Duckworth campaign…

In response to Republican Mark Kirk’s reversal on his endorsement of Donald Trump, Duckworth deputy campaign manager Matt McGrath issued the following statement:

“What took so long? Apparently for Mark Kirk, it’s acceptable to refer to Mexicans as rapists; to propose banning Muslims from entering the country; to call women fat pigs and dogs; to mock a reporter’s disability; and to insult just about everyone who doesn’t look like Donald Trump. Until today, and for nearly a year, Kirk was fine with all of that, and even saw a ‘net benefit’ in Trump’s campaign, and offered himself up as a potential adviser. Yesterday, Tammy Duckworth called Senator Kirk’s silence in the face of Trump’s bigotry a betrayal, and we’re standing by our statement.”

…Adding Still More… Press release…

Democratic congressional candidate CJ Baricevic (IL-12) today called Donald Trump’s attacks on U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel as racist and challenged Congressman Mike Bost to join Speaker Paul Ryan in denouncing Trump’s comments and urged Bost to withdraw his support of Trump as Senator Mark Kirk did on Tuesday.

Baricevic issued the following statement:

“I join Speaker Paul Ryan and Senator Mark Kirk in condemning Donald Trump’s racist attack that Judge Gonzalo Curiel, a native of Indiana, cannot impartially try a case in our federal court system due to his family heritage. This despicable racist attack on Judge Curiel has no place in our country and deserves universal condemnation. Congressman Bost should immediately condemn this attack and rescind his support of Donald Trump for President. Shame on Mike Bost if he does not deplore Donald Trump’s racist statement and continues to support Donald Trump.”

Good move. Great move. We all knew Trump would say something in short order to allow this natural pivot.

Well crafted and thoughtful to the moment, please, Kev and your Crew, do not waver, and don’t let Sen. Kirk waver off this statement that leaves no room for wiggle room.

It’s about Illinois, and her role in this Country and the role of its delegation in the Senate to consider the greater good for America, not pander to the worst for party loyalty.

    Well done.

    Right move politically and morally.

Someone has to stand up to Trump. Romney and Graham are about to get a whole lot more company…I hope.

“While I oppose the Democratic nominee…” Then who are you voting for Senator? This statement is meaningless CYA unless you tell us who you DO support.

  14. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 2:55 pm:

The correct call. I agree that trashing a judge for who he is and not what if anything he has done is appalling. I also think litigants should not be rewarded for manufacturing a conflict when they don’t like a judge or a case isn’t going their way. This judge had this case well before Mr. Trump decided to run and well before he made his comments about immigration. Taken to an extreme, if all a defendant in a case had to do was to insult the judge’s heritage to create a conflict and get them removed from a case, it would happen all the time. We cannot and should not reward such behavior.

He’s still on tape saying he will vote for Trump and the Republican nominee. That’s all that matters. He will still lose big in Nov.

  20. - The Muse - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:03 pm:

A good move but I still think he’s done. Women are showing a huge amount of support for Clinton here and independents don’t look to keen on the Donald. This is going to be an ugly, ugly race.

  21. - TooManyJens - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:05 pm:

Good for Kirk, I guess, but Trump’s the same person now that he was when Kirk decided to support him. All that’s changed is that he’s made the racism a little more obvious.

  22. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:05 pm:

===One senator on the record and 99 more to go….===

Not quite right. To their credit, Jeff Flake, Ben Sasse and Lindsay Graham have disavowed Trump already. There will be more.

Given his some of the outrageous comments Kirk has made, it’s only a matter of time before Trump disavows Kirk too. You can follow it all on Twitter.

  23. - Terry Salad - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:06 pm:

Trump claimed the nomination and quickly went into meltdown mode and is now toxic in a general election (it will get worse, too). This won’t save Kirk.

  24. - Illinois Bob - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:06 pm:

So once again Senator “I won’t endorse Sen Durbin’s GOP opponent because it might affect our relationship” Kirk stabs his party, and its voters, in the back. Republicans won’t support him. Liberal Dems sure won’t support him. Other than family members and people his payroll, who’s going to vote for this guy?

  25. - OneMan - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:06 pm:

    Yes….

They way the notification from Poltico was structured I thought something had happened to Kirk.

  26. - Ghost - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:07 pm:

    well said!

  27. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:08 pm:

Considering the common perception of Trump just a few years ago - few of which were positive - it is scary and stunning to see where we are and he is today. That a Senator should be considered brave and intrepid to rightfully and easily describe this heap of ego and bile for what he truly is, shouldn’t be a rarity. Trump should never have gotten off the ground, and now we are facing the reality of him being our President. Good God, what is happening?

  28. - Downstate Dem - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:12 pm:

Given Duckworth’s upcoming trial and lackluster candidacy downstate where about 40 percent of the general election vote is generated, this Kirk move puts him at even-odds of winning the Senate race.

  29. - John Gregory (ex-IRN) - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:14 pm:

Kirk’s initial instinct last year was to criticize Trump’s views and tell him to “shut up.” Someone should’ve told him to stick to that.

  30. - atsuishin - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:14 pm:

good for kirk but i am still behind duckworth hillary needs a majority in the house and senate. Maybe he could run for AG in 2018. I would love to see madigan get the boot.

  31. - Michael Westen - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:15 pm:

Downstate Dem-no it doesn’t. Nobody except Kirk’s inner circle cares about this idiotic trial, and downstate is the only area where Trump will do well and Kirk just disavowed the only thing he would have had in common with those voters. This changes very little-Kirk is likely toast.

  32. - Albany Park Patriot - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:16 pm:

I think Kirk has enough insensitive comments in the can about women and people of color to stick to him, with our without supporting his party’s leader.

  33. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:17 pm:

If nothing else, Kirk will be able to sleep more easily at night. He may have even brought the Dump Trump movement back from the grave -I don’t know if there’s a legal mechanism for the GOP to change the rules and deny him the nomination, but if they did there’d be less blowback now than there would have been a month ago. Or they might just abandon him in order to dilute Hillary’s “mandate” and claim that the House represents the most accurate reflection of the voters. They lose the SCOTUS but they’ll enjoy running against liberal courts for years to come.

  34. - Fusion - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:18 pm:

@FauxDonaldTrump: “Un-American Mark Kirk is a horrible Senator! IL deserves better! Weak and Pathetic!”

  35. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:18 pm:

IB your statement is silly. The GOP is stabbing themselves in the back. Trump is a threat to the Republic. An existential threat. I have no intention of voting for Senator Kirk, but he did the right thing. I hope somehow the sane minority of the GOP somehow wrests the nomination from the orange usurper.

    Illinois Bob - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:06 pm:

So once again Senator “I won’t endorse Sen Durbin’s GOP opponent because it might affect our relationship” Kirk stabs his party, and its voters, in the back. Republicans won’t support him. 36. - Amalia - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:19 pm:

good for him. but with or without Kirk, the U.S. Senate will be a changing’ Trump is an anchor and not in a good way. and last Thursday’s speech on foreign policy bashing Trump shows why Hillary will come out swinging in a substantive, and humorous, way that turned heads around quickly. hang on to your hats, Republicans. and we know that it’s not just Trump in the wrong on many other issues. It was your whole litany of now gone Presidential candidates who are out of step. and your platform.

  37. - Anon - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:21 pm:

I’ve been pretty much a straight Dem voter until now. Kirk now has my vote. Too bad other members of the “party of family values” don’t have the courage to do the same. Trump is a bigot and racist. Well said Kirk. Sorry Tammy.

  38. - Century Club - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:25 pm:

Congratulations, Senator Kirk. It’s the right thing to do.

  39. - hisgirlfriday - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:25 pm:

As if Trump hadn’t said a ton of other crazy things before today but great if it puts pressure on other Republicans to disavow Trump even if they don’t also get political benefit from it like Kirk gets.

  40. - IrishPirate - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:26 pm:

This may get deleted but any bets on how long it is before Trump says or Tweets that Kirk is “a stroke”?

“He’s a loser. Where’s his hot next wife”?

  42. - JoanP - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:30 pm:

Good for him, even if it was a tough re-election bid that made him do it.

  44. - Springfieldish - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:32 pm:

There is absolutely nothing “outstanding” about this self-serving move by Kirk. He actually waited until being chided to speak. Like an asked-for apology, Kirk’s way-too-late statement comes from that bleak, dark, purely political heart.

Why Kirk thought that, after so many so awful things that came out of Trump’s vulgar mouth, that he could be Trump’s ‘conservative conscience’ just a few weeks ago and suddenly say this and be taken seriously can only be chalked up to a headless echo-chamber office holder and campaign.

The trial will come and go and make headway only with those already committed to vote against Duckworth. After a decade of discovery delays, caused in large part by the plaintiff’s failure to produce, it isn’t likely they’re going to do any better at trial.

  45. - SAP - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:32 pm:

It is always the right time to do the right thing. Good on Senator Kirk.

  46. - AlfondoGonz - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:32 pm:

McConnell should really get to his minions quicker so they can act before it is too late.

“Uncle Mitch, can I meet with Supreme Court Justice Nominee Garland?”

Uncle Mitch, can I un-endorse Trump?”

Whatever you do, Kirk, don’t think or act for yourself. Wait for orders, follow them obediently.

Who knows, perhaps you can convince voters that you are a decent, hard-working war-hero with a moral compass.

  47. - Union Leader - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:33 pm:

Thank you Senator Kirk for putting the electorate ahead of party politics.

  48. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:35 pm:

Mark Kirk may lose the election anyway but this let’s him hold his head up high while doing so. Those hitching their wagons to Trump are already realizing their mistake.

  49. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:35 pm:

All politics is local. This is locally very shrewd. Maybe Tammy will disavow Hillary too. Then we’ll have an interesting thing going.

  50. - slow down - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:36 pm:

It’s disingenuous to pretend that Trump only recently revealed who he was and what kind of a President he would be. If Kirk were genuinely a man of principal, he would have taken this position long ago, and not now that the heat has been turned up.

  51. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:38 pm:

    - A guy -

You still backing the GOP Nominee?

    It’s a yes or no…

  52. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:42 pm:

    It’s okay to:

    1) call women “dogs”
    2) say that women need to be treated like “s***”
    3) cowardly attack tortured prisoners of war
    4) display rank bigotry towards Hispanic people, African Americans, and others

but when one of those extends to a federal judge, it’s across the line?

I don’t believe Kirk in the least.

  53. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:42 pm:

Yes. I have very, very deep concerns about Hillary Clinton. Would I prefer a better and more restrained nominee? I can assure you, I would.

  54. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:45 pm:

    - A Guy -

Then you are supporting Trump, the good and the bad, like today…

    “Congratulations”

  55. - 60611 - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:45 pm:

The praise for Kirk is interesting. Pardon me if I don’t see this as a profile in courage. The fact that he didn’t do it when Trump: a) called for the deportation of 12 million people & splitting of families; b) made the unconstitutional proposal for barring entry into the country based on religion; c) questioned the valor of POWs; d) obliquely encouraged the use of violence at his rallies; e) mocked a disabled reporter; f) scammed people into paying for Trump Univ.; or g) any of a myriad of other things — is telling. Kirk didn’t speak up during any of that. In the short run, this is a good day for Kirk in that it will give some Dems and most Independents a reason to give him another look. In the long run, it is more likely a wash as some Rs stay home completely or don’t vote for Kirk.

  56. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:46 pm:

    Dear Sen. Kirk and Crew,

    “Please stop taking”

  57. - Huh? - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:48 pm:

So if I remember correctly, kirk said he would endorse trump if he was nominated. So this announcement is a retraction of a previous endorsement?

Sorry, too little and too late. Still not getting my vote.

  58. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:49 pm:

    To the Duckworth Update,

It was always the mistake to endorse Trump to begin with, with Trump being “Trump”. It’s fair game.

What Kirk and Crew now (like stop with the Pretreaus, ugh) will try to help change what was a bad decision and now is a great decision.

  59. - Jocko - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:53 pm:

==MARK KIRK says he will write in “Petraeus”==

You distance yourself from a twice-divorced boor to write-in an adulterous, discredited general?

  60. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:56 pm:

I don’t think he had a choice; it would’ve been suicide to stick with Trump at this point. His chances still don’t look good unless he can gain traction on Duckworth’s upcoming legal problems.

  61. - A guy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:06 pm:

==Then you are supporting Trump, the good and the bad, like today…

    “Congratulations”==

There’s a lot of time between now and November Willy. Election season is an eternity. No one won or lost today, yesterday or a week ago. No one will win or lose over the next day, or week or month.

I’m hoping and expecting some serious refinement between now and then (frankly, on both sides)

The GOP nominee won’t win on CF. It’s a landslide loss. He likely will lose Illinois by a strong margin, but probably less than anyone here thinks. As for our whole country, even today, I think he’ll win. Despite himself. His greatest asset is Hillary Clinton.

Time will tell. I would humbly suggest that Congratulations…is not in order.

  62. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:07 pm:

Jocko, perhaps he meant Bob Petraeus, the General’s cousin.

To the Post, let’s give Kirk partial credit for doing the right thing a little more slowly than we would have liked.

  63. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:12 pm:

===I’m hoping and expecting some serious refinement between now and then===

    Trump will become less racist.

    That’s fun.

    Like I said, “Congratulations”

  64. - Angry Chicagoan - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:17 pm:

So we at least have some clarity from Kirk. It’s OK to generalize that Mexicans are rapists; it’s OK to call for unconstitutionally excluding certain groups from the country; OK to incite violence at rallies or scam people for your products or advocate torture just for the hell of it — but bashing a federal judge is going one step too far.

Forgive me if I don’t buy this conversion for a minute. This is just the typical Kirk reaction to an opinion poll. No values whatsoever.

  65. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:20 pm:

Hmm. Maybe I will go to Cleveland after all https://politicalwire.com/2016/06/07/flake-suggests-convention-challenge-to-trump/

  66. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:21 pm:

Just so I understand this correctly, Kirk is disavowing the nominee to support a man who was susceptible to a honey pot scandal where he cheated on his wife, gave away classified information to a reporter, and is now a convicted felon?

Ok. I’m sure that won’t be used in any Duckworth ads.

  67. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:28 pm:

Not sure you can, actually - I think it’s booked for events for the entire week.

Flake’s a flake, though. If he thinks Trump is a losing proposition, what does he think will happen if the will of a majority of Republican primary voters is overturned?

  70. - Mcleaniac - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:37 pm:

I am a regular GOP voter and I will be voting for Duckworth for United States Senator.

  71. - Illinois Bob - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:49 pm:

    @Mcleaniac

Then you obviously care little about the well being of the nation. She served honorably in the military, but the things she wants to do in office are the antithesis of what anyone with ANY conservative principals can support.

America loses whichever one is elected, so I’m gonna sit that race out…

  72. - Illinois Bob - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:56 pm:

Trump will be elected by a close electoral vote majority. Hillary will probably get more individual votes because Trump won’t bother campaigning in deep blue states like Illinois, and she’ll win in those states by massive margins.

The Dems will take back the Senate for two years, but they won’t have enough of a majority to get their agenda past a veto. The House will stay GOP.

Schumer will be a big step up from Reid. Pelosi will get even nuttier.

  73. - Threepwood - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:16 pm:

Kirk should get some kudos for doing the right thing when few of his colleagues are, and no question Duckworth is capitalizing on it. But yeah. There’s still no excuse for waiting this long. I’d give Kirk far more credit if he owned up to that as well.

  74. - Vole - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:21 pm:

  75. - Pawn - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:40 pm:

Joe Bidenopolous, not only is he a convicted felon, but he has had his national security clearance revoked. Hell of a handicap for a president.

  76. - Big Mouth - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:46 pm:

Sen, Kirk continues to show that he knows he is in trouble. He cares so much about his re-election that he has to pander to Democrats to have a chance. He exemplifies what is wrong in Washington. My bet, he goes down in November.

  77. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:02 pm:

Kirk knows so little about state election law that he doesn’t know his vote won’t count unless his candidate registers as a write-in candidate.

Driving the Trump votes away pretty much insures Kirk loses.

  78. - illini - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:13 pm:

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for Mike Bost to abandon his support of Trump - good play by CJ. Just wondering if it will be noted in the News Democrat or the Southern.

Same goes for my Congressman, John Shimkus. Always an unquestioning and loyal partisan.

  79. - Timmeh - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:40 pm:

==Driving the Trump votes away pretty much insures Kirk loses.==

    Will Trump voters:
    -Leave the box blank
    -Vote for Duckworth
-Vote for Kirk knowing about the “snub” and hoping for the best
-Vote for Kirk because he’s R (and thus not D), not knowing about the snub

    I’m guessing the last two.

  80. - Andy Nymous - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:57 pm:

I guess Kirk’s not opposed to misuse of classified information.

  81. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 7:19 pm:

The Dems will take back the Senate for two years, but they won’t have enough of a majority to get their agenda past a veto. The House will stay GOP.

Schumer will be a big step up from Reid. Pelosi will get even nuttier. ”

Trump still has a chance but he had better get his act and his facts together. The only reason he even has a chance is because Clinton is a poor candidate herself.

Comings from someone who lied about his military career quite the endorsement.

Lots of Rs and Ds here. Why doesn’t anyone consider a third party candidate this year, like Libretarian Gary Johnson, or Jill Stein of the Greens?

You might get closer to your stated party’s roots with a third party candidate, and in the case of Jill Stein, you can vote for a woman for president!

(So no, we don’t have to saddle the nation with Hilary Clinton and her baggage, especially that large piece named “Bill”.)

Because I want my vote to help prevent Donald Trump from becoming President of the United States.

“MARK KIRK says he will write in “Petraeus” when he votes this fall and definitely won’t vote for Hillary”

Politico: FBI claimed Petraeus shared ‘top secret’ info with reporters http://www.politico.com/story/2016/06/fbi-petraeus-shared-top-secret-info-with-reporters-224023

Better to write in “Vermin Supreme”, Senator.

Perhaps they are remembering the Green Party votes that gave us a second term of Blagojevich instead of a Governor Topinka. I wish I could take my Whitney vote back (nothing against him).
