Morning shorts
Friday, Jun 8, 2007 - Posted by Rich Miller Paul is taking the rest of the day off. His birthday party last night was a blast and many thanks to all who showed up. But the festivities resulted in both of us being a bit behind schedule this morning, to say the least. Morning shorts will be posted in a few minutes, but use this as an open thread until then. Thanks. * Illinois lawmakers calls for overhaul of state constitution * Bethany Carson: Con Con in 2008? * Civil justice measures stall in IL legislature * Veterans group in flap with Quinn military program name * Auditor: Payments didn’t surprise Thompson * Disaster aid granted to 81 Illinois counties hit by April freeze * Lawmakers put hold on land swap effort for proposed resort * Mayor’s likeness found in tree trunk * Daley names budget chief, CFO * CPS error may mean deportation for leader

Regardless of how anyone feels about the worthiness of and/or need for a constitutional convention, everyone should understand that - even in the most ideal sense - it still pushes off for a minimum of several years any real solution to so many of the problems that cry out for redress NOW.
Remember: con-con first requires successful passage of the statewide referendum … then the election of delegates … the convention’s work to assemble a proposed new constitution .. putting said proposal to the voters for final approval … and then legislative enactment of any new provisions (for i.e. school-funding improvements). Altogether, that makes it sound as though 2010 or ‘11 could be the very earliest we could expect a constitutionally-driven solution for the growing problems that have plagued our state for years and continue today … problems that the Guv and legislature could fix today, if actual political will were brought to bear.
Con-con may or may not be a good idea. But let’s drop any illusions of it as a pain-free and quick panacea.

Paul Volpe is a stand-up guy and a professional. I had the pleasure to work with him at the Illinois Tollway during his short stint there.
But that was before I was axed by Blago’s brownshirts, now 5 to 6 people do my old job.

With regard to the Pyramid so-caled land swap (i.e., rape of public lands), it is still alive under HB 0029 due to Amendment 3 put forth by Sen. David Luechtefeld. Poor precedent if this sale of state Park lands goes forward, and, how will the Feds react since it was through their monies some of this came about?

Rich: “Paul, why did you just kiss my ear?”
Paul: “Why are you holding my hand?”
Rich: “Where is your other hand?”
Paul: “Between two pillows.”
Rich: “Those arent pillows!”
Rich and Paul jump from the bed. Rich doing some sort of arm stretches where his clenched fists touch his chest then extend out spread eagle.
Rich: “Good tome last night.”
Paul: “Yeah, great birthday! Two brothers is a really great place — a real class act.”

Don’t make fun of these guys for celebrating a b-day; they produce one of the best political products in the country. He who is without sin can cast the first stone.
