*** UPDATED x1 *** This just in… Quinn admin sent out wrong veto message
Tuesday, Aug 23, 2011 - Posted by Rich Miller *** UPDATE - 6:35 pm *** OK, so, the governor’s press office just called to say that the amendatory veto message they sent out for SB170 which imposed strict conflict of interest standards was e-mailed in error. That’s not actually what the AV does. What the AV really does is not known to me at the moment. So, I deleted the first part of the post. Oops. * 5:48 pm - [Deleted content…] * The other AV was of SB90, which originally removed the requirement that Secretary of State driver facilities have deputy registrars and allows driver facilities to be permanent places for voter registration. From Quinn’s veto message…
The Quinn folks were definitely worried today about the “Indiana took our jobs” story today, so this might be seen as a nice little diversion. As with most radical amendatory vetoes, these probably will never again see the light of day.

Paid for by Veteran’s for “Rewrite to do Right!”

I’m ok with AVs… when they relate the legislation in question. The first one does, but the second one seems to come out of left field. If he wants a Veteran’s Advocate, why not just ask our State Veteran’s affairs group to create some?
- Nagidam - Tuesday, Aug 23, 11 @ 6:40 pm:
Better yet, why doesn’t the Governor actually propose legislation so the GA can consider his great ideas. If these ideas are worthy of an AV from the Governor then maybe they were worthy of actual bill consideration.

I got home from work and started in on a project that requires me to dig a hole in my backyard. But no matter how fast I dig, every time I take a break and check the blog Quinn’s already dug a bigger, deeper hole.

Maybe State legislators can route IL Vets needing assistance to a Veteran’s Advocate who can assist in obtaining a successful resolution to the problems of their vet constituents and their families.
It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that the Veterans Administration falls short of vet & citizen expectations.

It’s the wrong way to go about it but let’s remember that Quinn has always supported vets, including during his tenure as Lt Gov., so his heart’s in the right place on this one.

Pat Quinn easily the worst of all 57 governors.

Okay quinn likes to send out press releases whining about things that will never become law, sure, however he wants to spend his time. But does he have to screw with the legislative process while doing so?
- Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Aug 24, 11 @ 9:30 am:
Gov. Quinn has never met a proposal for a “[Fill in the blank] Advocate” he didn’t like. Laudable as the idea might be (and populist), do we really need more government, especially at the local level where we are among the leaders in the nation in the size of our bureaucracy?
- Kasich Walker, Jr. - Wednesday, Aug 24, 11 @ 9:40 am:
No, Ron. We need more pols paying for polls confirming what they want to hear.
We need more corps sponsoring political conventions, too.
We need more political advertising to boost local TV revenue while their commentators tsk tsk about campaign spending.

I’m confused on SB 170 - is this just a press release misfire, or an actual “un-vetoing” of a veto (like Rich wrote about last week)?
- Kasich Walker, Jr. - Wednesday, Aug 24, 11 @ 10:06 am:
I’m not quite the written equivalent of speechless, no pun intended.
Is SB170 a bill about the IL School for the Deaf?
Is SB90 about voter registration at IL Driver License facilities?
Dirty Red, I apologize for being too slow to catch your joke.
