Let’s all play “Rate the campaign video”
Monday, Aug 20, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller * Online campaign videos are different from TV ads, so keep that in mind when rating this online video from Democratic state Sen. Gary Forby’s Republican opponent Mark Minor. From the campaign…

Is “god awful” a choice?
Clearly, this guy isn’t getting worthwhile political advice.
- GOPops - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:14 pm:
Garbage — if folks would just get good production , they would get good results . I have come to expect garbage products from SRO
- Mouthy - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:19 pm:
Whether this “ad” cost under $10 or not it’s a bargain for Sen Forby.
- OneMan - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:25 pm:
You know, you could even make the Hannibal Lector angle work if done right…
This wasn’t done right.
- NIref - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:27 pm:
This might work for raising money out of district, but Forby has been in every paper in the district fighting the closures since they were rumored. Minor clearly does not recall Forby’s secessionist comments immediately following the closure.
F for production.
D for content. Seriously, Silence of the Lambs? It might have been witty in 1992, but not twenty years later.
F for logical presentation.
And seriously, the number of times Forby is mentioned and the amount of screentime he gets, compared to Miner is going to hurt Miner. Since the add is not particularly memorable or witty, the only thing that is going to stick in people’s minds is Forby. State Senate races are of notoriously low saliency. Having a memorable name trigger could decrease ballot in this race and swing non-voters to Forby.
- Egyptian - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:28 pm:
Absolutely disgusting and I’m a republican from he 59th.
- Shore - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:28 pm:
There’s a story there, they just tell it in an awful way. “Eating prisoners”-is cannibalism breaking out in the corrections system?
- Sad to be Republican - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:37 pm:
This is so awful that the person involved should be shot and their executioner should kill themselves and go after them in hell.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:40 pm:
“Next on Son of Svengoolie …”
Well, the SGOP is doing “something” … I think?
I vote the SGOP should eat this video with a niiiice chianti and fava beans …
- JimBo - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:43 pm:
I don’t know if anyone else noticed this or not, but when watch it the first time that 1:07 goes by pretty fast. But if you watch it a second time, it really seems half-fast.
- Reality - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:44 pm:
I’m a hard core Repoublican and I have to say, on this one I am ROTFLMAO! This is pure amature hour at the improv.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:50 pm:
Ok, let’s “flesh” this out ….
It’s not a comedy, yet the prisoner is a spoof of Silence of the Lambs …
It’s not a serious hit piece because the the horrible comedic-like acting of the prisoner, while trying to scare ….
It’s not a “scary” piece, because the scary aspect of the prisoners is spoofed that the prisoner is free to roam in the general population of other prisoners…
The “facts and hit part” in the 2nd 30 seconds is lost, due in part to the “horr-edy” of the prisoner and the LOUD narrator. Let us not forget the horribly cropped picture.
The editing and sound are uneven and add to the “horr-edy”, like a 9th grade YouTube video for a grade about something related to safety.
All that was missing was the “Son of Svengoolie” doing this same critique with a rubber chicken being thrown either by or at the Son….
In conclusion … it ain’t my money, it ain’t my district so …its got a catchy tune and easy to dance to … I give it an 83
- Deep South - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:50 pm:
Whoa….
Minor. Is. Clueless.
- J - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:56 pm:
Important question: Anyone else want to start a kickstarter fund to try and get them to make the rest of The Silence of the Lambs?
- Cheryl44 - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 1:57 pm:
I read the comments then watched. The comments do not begin to let one in on the awfulness of this thing.
- Ray del Camino - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 2:05 pm:
I’m with Cheryl. That is hilariously bad. More middle-school production values from this crowd.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 2:08 pm:
I think I also saw a video similar to this one on an episode of that “iCarly” kids show …
- walkinfool - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 2:12 pm:
Gotta be an in-house production. By that I mean by interns in the campaign office.
If the ILGOP had any hand in it, it would have been all Madigan’s fault.
- MrJM - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 2:30 pm:
Rating:Three-and-a-Half Trombones

- Holy Cow - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 2:36 pm:
We are already in a horrible place thanks to stupid politicians, this guy can only make it worse…That video must have been made by the local grammar schools A/V club. Unbelievable that this guy is the best the republican party can come up with..Wow
- Bitterman - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 3:12 pm:
That it was even made is hard to believe….that it was made public is tragic for the candidacy.
- View from the Cheap Seats - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 3:16 pm:
It puts the lotion in the basket
- Bill - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 3:32 pm:
I didn’t think it was possible but this guy makes Forby look like a statesman.
- Great Scott - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 4:59 pm:
Did Ed Wood direct this one?
- zatoichi - Monday, Aug 20, 12 @ 8:47 pm:
This is Minor’s product to convince voters to trust him in making serious decisions? Ouch!
- Dan Bureaucrat - Tuesday, Aug 21, 12 @ 12:35 am:
Take home message: Our prison system would be in a lot better shape if Democrats didn’t squander the budget to the point that we have to release cannibals into the parking lot.
- Alan Mills - Tuesday, Aug 21, 12 @ 6:03 am:
It is hard. To imagine that someone could manage to offend just about everyone in a single, short video, and still not say anything at all. Minor has won that prize. Cannibals are not a big issue in the IDOC (or anywhere). Forby (much as i disagree with him both on policy and tactics) has fought like demon to keep Tamms open. Tamms is not cheap to run. There is no evidence at all that Tamms is keeping anyone safer. And the production values are so bad, it calls into question whether aminor will bring the same level of “professionalism” to his work in the legislature if elected.
- Bill F. - Tuesday, Aug 21, 12 @ 7:38 am:
That is awesome. Kudos to the Onion for getting into local politics.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Aug 21, 12 @ 8:28 am:
Awesome.
We’re going to hear more from the writer and actor, and I don’t just mean a postcard. The Big Voice Man narrator is a born game-show announcer.
One quibble. Why put the red-white-and-blue and stars on the donkeys? Shouldn’t the flag be reserved for the elephant? The donkeys should have a hammer and sickle.
- WazUp - Tuesday, Aug 21, 12 @ 9:19 am:
P.U.
- Smoke - Tuesday, Aug 21, 12 @ 12:04 pm:
This is the most illiterate and obnoxious video. What some people won’t do to get elected.
- BacktotheBasics - Wednesday, Aug 22, 12 @ 2:42 pm:
Let’s be real….Minor doesn’t know the first thing about politics obviously because he is putting out a video that is a mute point. Senator Forby has been doing nothing but fighting for those involved with the facility closures. Maybe Minor has a “broken moral compass” as he stated the citizens of Southern Illinois have, since he is flat out lying to the public with this video. He needs to wake up and realize that he is going up against a man who has fought for his constituents and will continue to do so. Maybe he should accept defeat before he tarnishes his “clean pastor” reputation and his congregation begins to see him for the “dirty pastor” that he is.
- Raaaalph - Wednesday, Aug 22, 12 @ 8:20 pm:
Awwww they took the video down….and I was hoping it would go viral.
- Jill - Thursday, Aug 23, 12 @ 11:51 am:
Sorry I didn’t see the video but I do know the man. Mark is an educated fine man of God. He is a father and a grandfather. He always comes when a friend in need reaches out. He is NOT a politician which is a point in his favor. Don’t judge him on one poorly conceived commercial.
