Rate the Oberweis announcement video

Friday, Nov 22, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* State Sen. Jim Oberweis announced his US Senate campaign via YouTube today. He answers a question right off the bat about why he’s running again. He admits to making “mistakes” in his past campaigns. He even says he plans to work across the aisle in the Senate. Oberweis also criticized Sen. Dick Durbin for serving in DC since Michael Jordan was a college sophomore.

I believe that candidate’s wives should live in the same state as the candidate.

  2. - 47th Ward - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 2:45 pm:

I wish I could unwatch that video. Oof, the pablum, the nasally voice, the white back ground, my head hurts.

This video should help Durbin raise another million and should scare the heck out of Bruce Rauner.

  3. - Norseman - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 2:48 pm:

Sorry, I can’t handle watching this guy after just eating.

  4. - more of the same - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 2:48 pm:

this guy should just be happy that he finally won an easy State Senate seat and just stay there. Another rich guy who thinks his way is better than everyone else’s, I’m even sick of his ice cream. And now his wife doesn’t even live here to avoid paying tax in the State that he wants to represent. No wonder this state has no money when our own elected officials can’t support Illinois. Very arrogant and very sad, go back to milking the cows Jimmy.

  5. - Under Influenced - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 2:49 pm:

    I made it 19s in before I lost interest…

  6. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 2:50 pm:

If Michael Jordan ever shot 1 for 6, Dean Smith would have sat him on the bench.

“Who is the only man to stop Michael Jordan in college? Dean Smith”

    To the Announcement,

Even in a 4:45 minute announcement, you can’t explain away Pitchforks and Torches, SSM and intolerance … black helpicopters and Soldier Field, and now the Florida Residing “Marie Antoinette” wife who “winters” in Florida and tells the voters of Illinois to “eat Ice Cream” as she resides, not even in another Illinois Senatge district, but another state in another region.

C-, but trying to explain away Dopiness is hard for anyone….

“Jordan… top of the key … clunker off the back of the rim, Coach Smith points to Worthy to rplace Jordan who is 1 for 6 early on …”

  7. - dave - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 2:58 pm:

    Oh my… that was awful.

  8. - Publius - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 2:59 pm:

Well, actually, I think it is a pretty good ad. He sounds reasonable and he is talking about issues and stands that i think the publice will agree with. That doesn’t speak to the guy himself or what he truly believes, but it does speak to his ability to hire at least one competent consultant and that consultant’s ability to run a sensible focus group.

  9. - railrat - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:00 pm:

THE poster child for “Narcissistic Personality Disorder”!!! on the verge of sociopathic !!!

  10. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:01 pm:

The “Stain of Intolerance” promises only 12 years of his Slytherin Style? If he wins, will his wife choose Illinois third behind Florida and DC?

  11. - Dee Lay - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:05 pm:

    Yikes.
At least he didn’t have a too clean barn coat and a farm field behind him.

  12. - Jorge - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:06 pm:

Meh. Its a C. I laughed out loud about the dependence on foreign oil quip. I guess he hasn’t heard America is on schedule to be the number one oil producer in the world by 2015.

  13. - OneMan - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:07 pm:

    meh…

  14. - wordslinger - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:10 pm:

No mas, at about 1:30. TKO.

You can’t ask people to just listen to nearly five minutes of straight-on, talking-head yakety-yak.

Where is he, Limbo? The white background is severe. Couldn’t he have just been in a natural setting — one not so brutal to the eye?

No clips or stills from past campaigns he could cut-away to, just to keep the viewers’ heads from exploding?

Give the audience a break. This things is deadly.

  15. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:16 pm:

The Edit/Cutaway aspects seem forced to make the new point. Lacks flow then.

Describing how long it has been since he keeps running and losing does not give the audience hope Jim Oberweis is the answer.

  16. - Spliff - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:21 pm:

Maybe he should run for Governor with his buddy Marty Sandoval

  17. - dupage dan - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:29 pm:

When will Jim “Salvi” Oberweis go away? Howsabout we offer him a radio show or a TV slot on public access or something. Please. Stop.

His presence on the ticket will make the GOP so much less likely to secure the Gov Mansion. Oy.

  18. - Whatever - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:35 pm:

I give it a “F”. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long, unfocused, and self-absorbed. Bad production values. Bad editing. Bad message. Bad candidate. And didn’t Carol Moseley Braun run an ad admitting mistakes? Bad precedent. Awful.

  19. - Tom B. - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:43 pm:

It’s rare you get a candidate that has absolutely no ability to make a race more competitive, yet can increase your fundraising exponentially. Kudos to Senator Durbin.

  20. - anon - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 3:50 pm:

Is this the best the critics can do? Regarding the non-resident spouse issue: the feigned outrage is duly noted. How many of you were also aghast when former Congressman Sidney Yates rarely, if ever, returned to the 9th Congressional District? For all practical purposes, he had ceased to live in Illinois and also was challenged as to his residency and his petitions be notarized in the District of Columbia.

Former Congressman John Porter’s wife and US Senator Mark Kirk’s ex-wife were not too fond of Illinois either. During the last Chicago mayoral race, Amy Rule, the wife of Rahm Emanuel, stayed in D.C.

The announcement was average at best.

  21. - Raymond - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 4:08 pm:

It’s just awful - incredibly tedious, and his breathing seems unnatural and shallow.

On the flip side, maybe this is his attempt to get out ahead of his past missteps in a low-profile way. Going forward, he can respond to questions about his chopper ad, etc., by claiming, “I’ve already spoken to that; it’s time now to move forward …”

  22. - Dirty Red - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 4:13 pm:

I’m Jim Oberweis, and for that I am sorry. If you don’t know what that means, you will soon. That’s my pledge to you.

Now let’s begin this campaign by making fun of a guy roughly the same age as me for being around too long.

  23. - Snucka - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 4:14 pm:

As a supporter of Gov. Quinn, I give this and every Oberweis ad 10/10.

  24. - Snucka - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 4:15 pm:

LOL at “Let them eat ice cream”. Nice end to the week.

  25. - LincolnLounger - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 4:20 pm:

Hasn’t Oberweis been running since Michael Jordan was a freshman? Or does it just seem that way.

He’s as cuddly as a barracuda.

  26. - A guy... - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 4:44 pm:

To the ad. C+ or B-. It looks to me like a series of ads with the breaks. Someone got him ready to look reasonable, even a bit repentant. That’s a long period altogether to try to hold interest. It’s well scripted. It’s clear the guy’s trying to “redefine” himself. A decision was made to focus on him and him alone, with no imagery around him to allow him to look more sincere. It’s a limited production, so rating production values isn’t necessary. Whoever’s guiding him has convinced him to buy into a new position. It’s not too hard to maintain that filming a introductory video (although for him it might be), it’s how well he can stay on that message going forward when he’s challenged by press and his opponent. I’m not voting for him, but the question was; rate the video. It’s a 2.5 GPA. With a generous professor a 2.6.

  27. - Dizzy Cow - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 4:51 pm:

Did anyone notice that he used his state senate logo?

What better way to start off than with a campaign finance violation?

  28. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 5:10 pm:

After going 1 for 6, and winning an Illinois Senate seat, not even a year ago, sworn-in, and with 100% Purity I will expect from Jim Oberweis as a Candidate for US Senate… It took Jim Oberweis 4:45 minutes to make a case, for all the excuses that would tell a reasonable person … “be happy finally winning at ’something’ because I do not want to be the person to Stain the ILGOP come 2014″

Jim Oberweis just put a stake in the heart of the ILGOP ticket, the question is who will rise above a Jim Oberweis leading a 2014 Campaign Ticket, with “Purity” being required, and “mistakes” being wished away….

This video is something the ILGOP needs to see and understand that Jim Oberweis, a State Central Committeeman, cares nothing about the ILGOP, the state party, the GOP Ticket, nothing for those “stuck” running with Back Helicopters and Ice Cream served to the intolerence.

This video, 4:45 seconds … is the first leak on the “Caine”, that Chairman Dorgan is trying to Captain.

I rate the video, as to the “Stain” it will now put on my Party I rate it “Poor”.

    Thanks, Jim Oberweis.

I just wish you would lose your senate seat and the SCC seat too… if your race for US Senate fails. But no, we are going to be stuck with you, and that is not good either.

  29. - Just The Way It Is One - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 5:37 pm:

Ho hum. I suppose ya have to say SOMEthin’ to kick it off, and SOMEbody had to run against the politically semi-infallible Dick Durbin…! So, to a more urgent querie: When and where are they givin’ out the Free Ice Cream?!

  30. - Hans Sanity - Friday, Nov 22, 13 @ 5:38 pm:

I had to listent to the first few seconds three times to see if I heard it right.

“I’ve been asking, why are you running again?”

It reminded me of Rauner saying that he is not a politician, but a citizen. (Lately he’s not a politician, but a business man.)

Nothing being said, but I really like Oberweis ice cream & his stores, so I’ll give him a passing 3.5 on a 5 point scale. I need to get more ice cream.
