Question of the day
Thursday, Dec 5, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller * We’re getting a late start because the pension reform debate pretty much sucked all the air out of the Statehouse. So, let’s continue with our Golden Horseshoe Awards…
Remember, as always, intensity of your nominations will count far more than the number of nominations. So, please explain your votes or they will be mostly ignored. Thanks much.

- dave - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 1:06 pm:
Best session bartender: Adam, at No Name Bar (State House Inn). Most importantly, he pours a good drink. But on top of that, he’s good company (knows when to engage, when to ignore), he knows a ton about a ton, and he always keeps the popcorn machine running.
- Food and Drink - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 1:35 pm:
Bartender - Kathleen at the Globe! She is a sweetheart and handles everyone with a smile.
Bartender/Waitress - Ashley at Sebastians - she does a great job making sure wine is always in stock!
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 1:43 pm:
This is usually one of our most popular contests, so I thought it was safe to double up with it today. Maybe not.
Or, maybe everybody is at the Third House party and aren’t commenting.
- Mike - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 1:43 pm:
Best session bartender: Graham Nicholson at Floyd’s Thirst Parlor.
- Anon - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 2:02 pm:
A lot of people are busy challenging petitions.
- Living in Machiaville - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 2:54 pm:
Best bartender: Terri Nelson at Boone’s. Always attentive, friendly, great smile and cool to chat with. She keeps the bar humming along and has made Boone’s, once an old favorite place, a new favorite place to grab a beer or cocktail.
- The Muse - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 3:21 pm:
Best bartender: Will over at Norb Andy’s. He does a lot with that little hole in the wall. He’s a friendly guy who remembers your name and your drink of choice. Not to mention he owns the place and has turned their menu into exceptional pub grub.
- Because I said so... - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 4:46 pm:
Kathleen at the Globe. She always remembers what you like to drink and she treats everyone kindly and with respect.
- 1776 - Thursday, Dec 5, 13 @ 5:00 pm:
Mike at DH Browns. Knows everybody’s name and drink. Smart enough to keep his mouth closed despite hearing conversations for two decades!!! Plus, he and Dave are always good for a few free drinks if you’re a good customer.
- Don't Worry, Be Happy - Friday, Dec 6, 13 @ 11:12 am:
Adam at No Name. I have to pretty much second dave’s comments. He’s a good mixologist, keeps the popcorn flowing, and creates a comfortable environment to hang out.
- So what? - Friday, Dec 6, 13 @ 11:22 am:
The best bartender is Louie at Gab’s. The guy is like 75 years old, still there 2 - 3 days a week. If you have a questions about local politics, he has the answer. If you have a question about the old ‘mob’ and he isn’t under some ‘non-disclosure’ agreement, then he will give you the answer. If you want to know what any old timer drinks, he has the answer. He doesn’t know state politics as well as some of the others here but that is why you can catch the Trib people there eating pizza and boozing.
- estubborn - Friday, Dec 6, 13 @ 12:07 pm:
Will at Norb Andy’s is truly a professional. Always good service if he is working. Despite being the runner up for “hottest bartender” according to the Illinois Times, he is as humble as ever. He may be second hottest, but he is second to none as a bartender.
- Beerman - Friday, Dec 6, 13 @ 1:48 pm:
Gotta go with Mike from Brown’s. The man knows what I am going to drink before I do.
- Liberal Lady - Friday, Dec 6, 13 @ 1:56 pm:
Will at Norb Andy’s is my favorite. He works hard and is always in a good mood.
- Down To Clown - Sunday, Dec 8, 13 @ 9:01 am:
Kathleen at the Globe for bartender. She always remembers your preferred drink and is super sweet.
