A picture is worth a thousand, um, mailers…

Monday, Nov 3, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* A reader sent along a photo of all the direct mail he’s received this fall. His explanation…

I live in Carol Stream, in the 46th district. Probably 75% of this is Deb Conroy/Heidi Holan back and forth.

The pic…

* And, while we’re at it, this was sent by Republican House candidate Leslie Munger’s campaign manager…

Rich,

Here’s a picture for your files. Taken yesterday in Grayslake, Illinois, Route 120 (see attached).

We couldn’t figure out why all of Bob Dold’s large yard signs sit perpendicular to the road and Brad Schneider’s signs face parallel. It turns out they had a printing error and all of Schneider’s large signs are printed upside-down on the back.

The pic…

Oops.

Really catches the eye and stands out from the maddening crowd … hmmm, could be a “+” after all.

    Indeed.

I see that the Proft piece with Madigan in the leotard made it to the Carol Stream resident’s mailbox.

  6. - DuPage Dave - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 11:37 am:

I can back up the Carol Stream voter re: the number of mailers in the Conway/Holan race. I got at least 15 in the last 2 weeks. They ended up in my recycle bin.

  7. - Irked - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 11:41 am:

Now I really regret throwing away all my mailers, because I want to see how much ground I could cover..I could cover that much with the Scherer-Bell back and forth alone!

Dude in Carol Stream, “We’re gonna need a bigger couch”

  9. - Stan - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 11:57 am:

If the Schneider team were smart they would just use two signs back to back to solve the situation. A sideways sign is mostly ineffective on a busy road.

… but it doesn’t surprise me that the campaign doesn’t know how to solve problems.

  10. - Cable Line Beer Gardener - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 11:59 am:

I also live in the 46th and some of the mailers for Holan are churned out so fast that they used Marty Moylan’s name instead of Conway’s.

  11. - Lunchbox - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:11 pm:

Those couches and room look familiar. :)

  12. - Huh? - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:18 pm:

I have been marking the “Return to Sender” and putting them back in the mail. Too bad I can’t do that for the door hangers.

  13. - Cheryl44 - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:20 pm:

I didn’t get that many mailers, but I got over 200 emails about various races in my spam folder over the weekend.

Deb Conroy has a work ethic that is model for all office holders. She canvases her entire district herself. If she loses I quit this game.

    WK….a bonus.

Running the state is not a walk-a-thon. I’m tired of Reps doing “car-seat checks” and the like. Just because you knock on a door and “listen” doesn’t make you a good legislator if you can’t actually solve the problems people have. This state is run poorly. But hey, my rep came to my door and said “hi” so all should be forgiven? What a bunch of BS.

I don’t understand why the fact that Deb Conroy actually goes out and talks to her constituents would set you off. Its more than most elected officials do in our state, and maybe she can actually account for people’s concerns when addressing State issues. From what I understand, Conroy has gotten some good marks in her first term as a legislator.

  18. - Wally Kubon - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 12:59 pm:

Stan, first read the Daily Herald endorsement of Deb Conroy, then we can talk. As I told Oswego yesterday if you need a ride to the polls or a sample ballot give me a call.

  19. - Pete Granata - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 1:00 pm:

Wally Kubon has left the building.

  20. - Stan - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 1:13 pm:

My comment is a more general one that specific to Conroy. I’d like to see officials do more detailed public debate or forums. I’d like them to get pinned down on issues more. People can get away with a lot when talking at the door. Thanks for the tip Wally. I did read the Herald endorsement. Did you read the Trib endorsement of Heidi? I think I’ll stay with Holan. Can I still get a ride?

  21. - Pete Granata - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 1:25 pm:

Stan, I called Wally. He said, “Stan can always get a ride”.

  22. - Arizona Bob - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 1:30 pm:

I once had an error spelling my name on yard signs. It was a small, interior error, but a lot of people noticed. The odd thing was that I think more remembered I was running from the disonant spelling than would have had it been spelled correctly. Just another one of there’s weird “where’s Waldo” effects that campaign literature sometimes has.

  23. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 1:53 pm:

Bob, just like a crooked picture on the wall, crooked yard signs attract more attention.

  24. - Responsa - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 2:19 pm:

Brad’s attention to detail fail is now duly noted by all. But then, many of us in the 10th have been aware of his competence issues for some time.

  25. - Gregory Tejeda - Monday, Nov 3, 14 @ 6:51 pm:

Seeing that photograph of all the mailings makes me envious. I only got one mailing the entire election cycle — from state Rep. Al Riley, who’s running unopposed.
