Also, considering she’ll will be a key supporter with or without it, doesn’t need it, and perhaps it could go to better use elsewhere. I suspect she was courteous in the process of formally not accepting it. i.e. not now. not, not ever. It may go back to the Leadership in this case. We’ll see.

OW, Understand your point with regards to the House, but the Senate did not have a vote in front of them. In the old chicken and the egg conundrum….I do wonder if the Speaker (ingeniously) scheduled those votes once he knew the distribution dates. Just wondering.

Are you saying, with the week notice of the date of the vote, MJM orchestrated the signing of the $400K checks, because Madigan knew in 5 days time, Rauner would be writing checks?

Thought that the $20 million Rauner slush fund was set up as a PAC. According to the SBE, everything is set up under his campaign fund - Citizens for Rauner, Inc. which is only required to file quarterly D-2 reports showing their income and expenditures.
When checking the the website this morning for my 2 Republicans in the GA, neither had reported a “contribution” and I understand that checks were passed out 10 days ago. The SBE has specific reporting requirements, so either these 2 are also refusing the contribution or they seem to be skirting the reporting requirements.
Bottom line, this all looks bad.

Rauner is failing Political Optics 101. He failed it with the grant cuts on Good Friday and he failed it with what appears to be a quid pro quo bribe here. This is all about the optics and she didn’t like them so she refused the $$$. Good for her.

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I do not believe you have to report a contribution to the state board of elections until after you deposit the check. The various reps could sit on these checks for a while to avoid reporting requirements.

Ray Poe said on local radio last week that he received an envelope from Rauner, but did not open it. When asked if he would accept a check, he said no he would not.

Walk, a point or two for suggesting Also….(lol) She’s in pretty safe territory. It’s easy to see that this didn’t sit well with her, because of timing. In this strategy of spreading contributions around, he’s trying to donate something to everyone. Not everyone has the same needs or challenges. She has the right and the luxury to politely decline. She did. I’m sure there will be others.

Not discounting the threat, but Karen has a carefully constructed coalition of soccer moms and mainline GOPers and is usually conservative enough and straightforward enough to win any contest handily. Being a woman helps her in her particular circumstance. I think she could still be Kane County chairperson if she wanted to be.

Remember; it’s not the following thru that creates the leverage, it’s just the threat.
For now. Like a bully.
Rauner will make it very clear what he expects, when, how, and without discussion, hesitation, or pause.
This isn’t about $4K, $8K, or $400K.
The number and timing are both obscene, but it’s the leverage, and Rauner uses money for leverage.
Always has.

She didn’t make a big deal out of it, just politely refused. Nice. Note to other lawmakers: histrionics and getting your name in the paper aren’t necessary. Sen. McConnaughay kept her ethics intact and still can be helpful to the governor that she helped elect. Not a huge deal, but refreshing in this day and age.

Terrible decision by McConnaughay that only makes things more difficult for her fellow Republican legislators. These contributions could have easily been explained as a direct response to the shenanigans of Speaker Madigan. “Speaker Madigan is playing fast and loose with legislation aimed to bolster his negative mailers to attack good, honest legislators. Governor Rauner refuses to sit by and watch Speaker Madigan make libelous claims against these men and women who work tirelessly to better Illinois. Therefore, the governor has made good on his promise to protect those legislators that make the hard divisions and act on the best interests of Illinois and its taxpayers.”

Anything can be made into lemonade. I’m not defending the timing at all, but cowering and hiding isn’t doing these legislators any good either. This wouldn’t be any more spin than Madigan claiming that republicans are against a property tax freeze; it’s all political spin. It’s about time Republicans start playing the game too.

So they can ask for money and it’s OK but it’s not OK for the Governor to make donations?

7 Degrees of Separation you are 8 degrees removed from the truth. McConnaughay took plenty of vendor checks as Kane Chairman. If Rauner owned an engineering firm and was building a bridge or a IL film exec director he might be good to go. Check out the D-2’s. She was named union statesman of the year a couple times.
