Cullerton sandbagged by Operation PUSH
Friday, Jan 29, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller * From Rep. Ken Dunkin’s guy Maze Jackson…
* Maze was referring to an Operation PUSH press conference today featuring Senate President John Cullerton, Rep. Mary Flowers and Rep. Dunkin… So, what’s going on? It looks like a classic sandbag. * Cullerton, according to his press secretary, absolutely did not know Dunkin would be there. “This was not our event,” he said. Cullerton went and subsequently went through with the event because Rev. Jesse Jackson asked him to. Rep. Flowers apparently didn’t know about Dunkin’s attendance, either. She didn’t seem too pleased. But at least we now know that Rev. Jackson isn’t going to be a bystander. …Adding… Rep. Flowers says she was completely surprised by Dunkin’s presence. She did say, however, that she was pleasantly surprised when Dunkin called on Gov. Rauner to sign the MAP grant bill passed yesterday. That bill, by the way, has not yet been sent to the governor, even though Senate President Cullerton was at PUSH today demanding that Rauner sign it.

I thought Rep Dunkin was going to camp outside the Speakers door until we had a budget?????
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:05 pm:
Yikes.
That Dunkin, March cabr come quick enough for him.
That’s Raunerite IllinoisGO money funding Dunkin.

After all the campaign donations, shouldn’t it be Rep. Dunkin-Rauner, now???
- Dome Gnome - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:09 pm:
I got a bit surprised by Dunkin today, myself. His campaign called my house, asking me to volunteer to help him get reëlected. If I lived anywhere near Chicago, this might not have taken me by surprise. I live in a heavily Republican, far west collar county. Is this a new part of his strategy? To bypass his local voters? Odd duck, that one!

You should totally do it! Start handing out Dunkin literature while wearing a Trump t-shirt.
- sideline watcher - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:12 pm:
wait. So anytime Ken shows up somewhere its because he’s supposedly integral to the negotiations? So he’s taking credit for getting Cullerton to lead the whole senate and all of Mary Flower’s work on this bill? wow.
- Honeybear - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:14 pm:
learner question; What is a sandbag?
- Politix - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:15 pm:
Why would Jesse Jackson align himself with Dunkin?
- Anon221 - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:17 pm:
Have sleeping bag will travel??? The day of the “camp out” announcement, there was a pic circulating showing Dunkin walking ahead of his staffers who were carrying the cooler bag and the sleeping bag for him.
- anon - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:20 pm:
So I suppose the governor will now be funneling money through Illinois GO, through Ken Dunkin to Rev. Jackson and Operation Push. follow the money!
- x ace - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:20 pm:
Why ? Follow the Money ?
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:21 pm:
They never told Cullerton who was going to be standing with him.
They never gave Cullerton the chance to evaluate the situation, knowing who he’s share a stage with on this, and allow those there Cullerton may not be happy with get credibility off of Cullerton’s own persona
It’s old school, but gets more juice now with the instancy of Twitter, Facebook, et al.
Lesson learned on Dunkin.
Again.
- Anonymous - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:23 pm:
“why would Jesse Jackson align with Rep Dunkin”? Because that’s where the cameras are…more cameras, more money. Always has been, always will be.

The Rev. knows a live one when he spots one and deep pockets Rauner looks like the latest new best friend.
- All Good - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:28 pm:
I wonder how long until Cullerton gets fed up with the Rauner/Dunkin antics. Rauner kept giving him a shout out during State of the State while demonizing Madigan.
Now Dunkin appears out of nowhere for this photo-op.
Are they trying to intentionally frustrate Cullerton so he gives up and stops trying to deal with them??!?
- siriusly - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:29 pm:
I think Mary is probably more steamed about the sandbag than Cullerton.
- Albany Park Patriot - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:30 pm:
Quite an ally Rauner has there. I’m sure he’s a valued partner.
- Anon221 - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:31 pm:
Painful. Only word to describe that video of the presser.
- Tell the truth - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:32 pm:
While most folks inside politics know Jesse is irrelevant under the state dome, regular folk (read: black voters) don’t. So it’s definitely a big coup for Rauner if Jesse is now on his payroll alongside Dunkin.
- 360 Degree Turnaround - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:35 pm:
Cullerton keeps trying to deal with rauner He is getting the raw deal today. He needs to learn quickly.
- Shake it - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:37 pm:
Jessie’s in with the Bruce?
- Anonymous - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:38 pm:
I hope Dunkin is having fun because in 10 months he’s going to be a trivia question
- Anon221 - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:39 pm:
So, when push (pun intended) comes to shove on the (foreseeable) override veto vote on SB2043, will Ken still be green???
- sosilly - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:42 pm:
Stupid move. Just pushed cullerton away.
- Union Leader - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:43 pm:
Remember a few days ago, the photo caption was of Reverend Jackson and Governor Rauner?
Maybe it was…. hey I need you to get Cullerton and Flowers to PUSH for a press conference and then let Dunkin get on the stage and stand behind Cullerton, so it looks like he is a deal broker.
- Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:43 pm:
Dunkin will walk on SB2043.
That’s his play. Been his play.
“NV”
- Anon221 - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:50 pm:
Wonder if he will be the lone reason once again for a failure to override. I know there are a couple of other Dems who also might go with N or NV. Maybe, as Flowers said, the Governor will take this as an opportunity to sit down and haggle out how much to fund instead of the flat out veto threat. She and Cullerton extended that offer today. As far as Dunkin goes, sometime, someday, his arrogance will catch up to him. I admire where he came from and the struggles he had, but I deplore where he’s taking those talents.

So Jesse supports zopp and Dunkin? Someone who helped close 50 schools in mostly minority neighborhoods and someone who broke a pledge with a childcare union so the child care program could remain a possible hostage. Which side are you on Jesse?
- Tone - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:52 pm:
Have any of you actually been to Dunkins district? He is extremely popular.

Do you have idea why those 50 mostly minority schools were closed?
- Crispy - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:55 pm:
Anyone with knowledge of the 5th Dist.: What are Stratton’s or Smith’s chances vs. Dunkin?
- Tone - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:55 pm:
BTW, more “minority” CPS schools will be closing in the coming years. The city continues to see an exodus of african americans. The crime and terrible job prospects (thanks to Illinois near worst in nation job growth) is forcing them to flee the state.
- Team Sleep - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 3:56 pm:
But will Speaker Madigan call the bill for an override? It passed 67-42-6, but 67 was the same initial vote total for SB 1229. Sure - two Dems (Arroyo and McAsey) were absent. But that still leaves Madigan with 69 likely yes votes. That would mean another bill would go down in flames during a veto override attempt.

==So, when push (pun intended) comes to shove on the (foreseeable) override veto vote on SB2043, will Ken still be green???==
No, he’ll be out of town on a Rauner sponsored event.

“Added Alternate Co-Sponsor Rep. Kenneth Dunkin”
Whoops. When Dunkin pledges to do something, expect the opposite…
- Nearly Normal - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:06 pm:
Honeybear here is a definition from the internet–”To sandbag someone” means to win by not letting the person know all of the information you have or or not show what skills you have until the end. For example, in sports a boxer can sandbag his opponent by not fighting up to his ability until the end of the fight when his opponent is overconfident and then he steps it up and beats him. In your example, the person probably sandbagged the other by withholding information until it was too late and then used that information to make a deal/stock trade.
Cullerton did not know that Dunkin was going to be at the meeting. So, Cullerton was sandbagged probably by Jesse Jackson.
- lake county democrat - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:07 pm:
So the leader of the state senate wouldn’t otherwise appear at an event to support a cause he supports so much he had previously committed to it…
…because a single person at the podium is his political opponent?!
Good to know what’s really important.
- Demoralized - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:08 pm:
Yes, because we needed more weirdness. Let’s add Jesse Jackson to the mix shall we?
- SAP - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:09 pm:
I don’t think a potential override will have to compete with the U.S. Open.
- Honeybear - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:17 pm:
Nearly Normal, Thank you so much. I get it!
- Tell the truth - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:20 pm:
Agreed, SAP, but the French Open is held in late May, so don’t hold the vote until the end of session!
- Gooner - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:27 pm:
Jackson getting involved here seems really strange particularly if Dunkin was invited. Could this be more about Jesse doing a favor for Maze, than about Dunkin?
Does PUSH and/or Jesse still have any influence?
I had the impression that they’ve been non-factors since about 1985, but I’m a north sider, so I admit my information may not be that great.
- Honeybear - Friday, Jan 29, 16 @ 4:30 pm:
Tone, I had heard that he is popular too. However, I am also heartened by talking to the parents of a coworker who lives in his district. We may be staying with them when we go up to do our door to door. They called Dunkin a “janky mug” which was said in a derogatory way. Maybe the tide is turning. All we can do is try.
