*** UPDATED x3 *** This just in… President Obama endorses Dunkin opponent Juliana Stratton

Monday, Mar 7, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Press release…

Juliana Stratton, Democratic candidate for state representative in Illinois’ 5th District, announced Monday that President Barack Obama is endorsing her campaign to unseat state Rep. Ken Dunkin. The president has recorded a radio and television commercial in which he endorsed Stratton and asked Chicagoans to support her.

“I’m endorsing Juliana Stratton because she will stand up for our children, our seniors and our working families,” Obama said. “Juliana will fight to get guns off our streets. Throughout our neighborhoods, too many young people and families live in fear. These families can’t afford inaction. Juliana Stratton will bring a new voice to Springfield as State Representative. She is the strong and devoted leader our neighborhoods need.”

Stratton, a first-time candidate for office, is taking on 13-year incumbent Ken Dunkin, who has received nearly $1.5 million in campaign support from right-wing political committees and a group that was created to advance Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda. Stratton has made a cornerstone of her campaign cracking down on the gun violence that has ripped through the city, vowing to push for tougher penalties for shooters who target children.

“Receiving President Obama’s endorsement is an incredible honor, and I will work hard every day for our families and neighborhoods to earn his continued trust and support,” Stratton said. “Our neighborhoods are proud of how President Obama has taken on dangerous right-wing agendas and has stood up for working families. As state representative, I will fight against reckless agendas that threaten our families.”

Stratton has criticized Dunkin’s record of failure, including siding with the National Rifle Association in voting for a law that made it easier for criminals to get guns and for helping Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner slash affordable child care for thousands of children.

I’ll post the ads in a bit.

*** UPDATE 1 *** Here’s the TV ad

* And here’s the radio ad

*** UPDATE 2 *** Dunkin ally Maze Jackson just said on WVON radio that “the same person who gave us Rahm Emanuel” is now endorsing Dunkin’s opponent, and then asked rhetorically if that means Stratton is now backed by Rahm. Click here to listen. Jackson has also cut a radio ad for Dunkin, which is airing on his program. And Jackson endorsed Emanuel himself last year.

*** UPDATE 3 *** Lynn Sweet

The Sun-Times has learned that the spots will run through the March 15 Illinois primary; there is about $300,000 behind the TV ad buy and about $100,000 for radio. The ads were produced by Adelstein and Associates, handling the media for the Stratton campaign.

Kinda counters Dunkin’s ads using POTUS, don’t it;)

    1) I guess you can only misuse a guy’s name for so long before you force him to respond.

    2) I would bet for the President to do this, he would have had to see some polling that Stratton can win.

    3) Dunkin has his own presidential power - over the weekend, seems like Dunkin supporters were heavily touting the endorsement of President Grant

Okay, so if that isn’t a death blow in the black community, then all really is lost. It will be interesting to see if he still wins.

Definitely did not see this one coming, it’s not every day you see a sitting president get involved in a state rep race.

    Saw this coming.

You literally can’t twist the words of a sitting President of the United States, who is a native son of your state and expect to get away with…

    … can you?

Nope. No way. Sorry. Doesn’t “work” that way.

    The only surprise for me?

    Television.

Then again, we’re talking millions spent in this race… so, I guess it’s not surprising.

Weren’t Obama’s approval numbers in that are about 60+%

    “We’ll talk later, Ken.”

    Ha!

  20. - Anon - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 8:59 am:

===1) I guess you can only misuse a guy’s name for so long before you force him to respond.===

Nah — this is much more personal than that. Campaigns use pictures with prominent politicians to help their campaign all the time.

I have literally never heard of a sitting U.S. President getting involved in a legislative primary race.

The President of the United States may simply not enjoy being interrupted during a very uncommon address to a state legislature, it really shows an absolute lack of respect for the presidency and the President.

  21. - Huh? - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:00 am:

If dunkin loses the primary and gets to sit out the general election, he still must be dealt with until next January.

We can only hope that he gets a plush state job courtesy of 1.4% and somebody else gets appointed.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:03 am:

===I am surprised that a sitting President is getting involved in a state legislative race.===

Normally, I’d agree, but Dunkin is a Raunerite in the Democratic Primary, with a sketchy past that includes grandstanding and winning the Century Club award Three times, and this is the President’s home state, with Dunkin “attempting” to upstage the President of the United States on a historic visit, during a speech…

… let alone… twisting a sitting President’s words, words of rebuke, and making them praise?

Nope, those parameters will bring a response.

  25. - Urban Girl - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:05 am:

Two things I believe strongly. 1 - Ken Dunkin must go. 2- If it takes what could be $2 million and the endorsement of a sitting president to get rid of Dunkin, something is wrong with our election system.

The Dunkin situation is simple for me. He does not do his job, and he is all talk no action. He missed a recent vote on child care assistance to do a boondoggle in New York, but this is not new for him. His missed the Blago impeachment vote to be on a cruise.

That’s the message. Everything else is just theatre. Ken is playing the “fool”, and Stratton is the “ingenue”. The various elected officials taking a large part in this have to ask themselves what roles they are playing.

  26. - Lovie - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:06 am:

    He’s been dunked!

  27. - cdog - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:06 am:

I suspect, and hope, that Dunkin will be gone.

Twisting the words of the POTUS, buying votes…. What is wrong with this guy? What is wrong with the people that can’t filter away these kind of character flaws?

Rauner needs to use his little minion before he’s gone. You know, pass some of his economic voodoo. /s

Oh wait, Rauner still doesn’t have the votes, never did, never will. /s

  28. - Georg Sande - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:08 am:

Impressive use of Presidential power. But … what if Dunkin survives? Would that serve as a precursor for a New York or California Obama residency?

  29. - Cassiopeia - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:08 am:

  33. - Anonymous - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:09 am:

Wow. All this stemming from splitting with the party on 2-3 votes. Votes that weren’t even for the budget Illinois so desperately needs, but issues like overriding a veto on arbitration. So much for any hopes of bipartisanship.

  34. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:11 am:

    - Georg Sande -

  35. - A guy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:14 am:

Not sure exactly what effect this will have on the Dunkin race; just don’t know enough about the dynamics there in that district. But, having the President get involved in a state rep race sure could be helpful in a bunch of target races elsewhere. This should be interesting to watch unfold.

===Not sure exactly what effect this will have on the Dunkin race; just don’t know enough about the dynamics there in that district.===

Obama is popular. That’s the dynamic. Otherwise, Dunkin never would have cribbed a new narrative to the Obama rebuke.

Are you a supporter of Dunkin, - A Guy -? Rauner sure is, Rauner is, if I can borrow, “All In” for Raunerite Ken Dunkin…

… Just like Reggie, and Benton, and… all Raunerites. Ken Dunkin stands wilt them, according to Bruce Rauner. What say you?

    Now, President Obama…

  40. - 47th Ward - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:24 am:

(Maybe the President could also include a quick civics lesson about the inappropriateness of some of Dunkin’s tactics, like $50s and $100s have no place in elections and democracy!)

  52. - Saluki - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:34 am:

As much as this is a shot at Dunkin, it is just as much a shot at Rauner. Mr. Obama, I have not supported much of your agenda, but I tip my hat to you for this one.

  53. - out of touch - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:35 am:

Maze “I’m relevant because I say that I am” Jackson is tasting the sour grapes that are fed to you when you bet on the wrong horse, recklessly play the race card, and stick your neck out for a loose cannon whose sails catch whatever political winds he feels will promote himself. Dunkin didn’t show up for child care, and abandoned his union and democratic allies to become a Raunerite. Maze who?

  54. - Arizona Bob - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:36 am:

Has there ever been a sitting President before so petty that he’d get involved with a state legislative race?

I guess he’s so satisfied with the slowest recession recovery in history, the raging war in the middle east that began in his tenure, the refugee crisis in Europe, and the expansionism of China in the Asian international sea lanes that he can divert attention to petty local politics at the behest of the Madman.(heavy snark)

  55. - ILPundit - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:37 am:

One way or the other, Ken Dunkin’s time at a State Representative are coming to an end.

The vote buying stuff is the key. With that information in hand, the House has the ability and justification to expel Dunkin as a member, and also to deny seating him next year in the unlikely event he pulls out a win on the 15th.

I imagine the Speaker would get a kick out of seeing if Jim Durkin and the House GOP would try to come to Dunkin’s rescue in that scenario.

  56. - Boone's is Back - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:38 am:

So is it safe to say that Ken Dunkin is having the worst day ever? MY guess is that once Maze is done flying off the handle his will be tomorrow.

  57. - Omega Man - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:38 am:

If Ken Dunkin loses in the primary or general elections, he going to be surprised (once he is finally out of office) that Rauner won’t be returning his calls. He will be “persona non grata” to both political parties.

  58. - 47th Ward - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 9:39 am:

The latest Gallup has Obama’s approval rating nationally among self-identified Democrats at 84%.

If anything, I’d guess that it’s higher in that district among Democratic primary voters, certainly not down around 60%.

I guess the governor and Proft will just have to hit the streets and generate a big GOP crossover vote for Dunkin.

You’re reading way too much into this Willy. Long term, it’s more important that the GOP doesn’t need to rely on a person in Dunkin’s position. We need to win elsewhere where it’s a little more practical for us to be able to count on seats and votes.

I’m not in the district. Don’t know what’s going on there. As for the President’s popularity there, not sure just how high it is. I know it is vs. some other people and things. But, I can tell you that the neighborhood around his house isn’t thrilled with the “down your throat” effort to convert park land into his personal trophy case. Many there speak about his not really being from that neighborhood any more and not maintaining the community connections.

I don’t know how this will play out. Stratton getting an endorsement from the President? That’s a bit much. Who’s exactly lined up on that side? That could have an adverse reaction in an area where churches and community leaders carry some extra weight. We’ll just have to wait and see.

But for other target races around Illinois where the President is NOT a hugely popular guy? This could be a huge help in those places. The GOP could use this to lose one ally and gain 5-7 seats elsewhere.

Like I said; it will be interesting to watch.

  88. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 10:40 am:

===One of the problems you get when you have as charismatic a person as BHO, is you expect him to be passionate all the time. He isn’t in these ads.===

What? The President’s “passion” is the deciding factor and you’re confused on that?

It’s a simple yes or no, do you support Ken Dunkin?

It’s that simple because Rauner is hundreds of thousands of dollars “All In” for Ken Dunkin, so you can answer it.

    Thanks.

  89. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 10:44 am:

===You’re reading way too much into this Willy. Long term, it’s more important that the GOP doesn’t need to rely on a person in Dunkin’s position. We need to win elsewhere where it’s a little more practical for us to be able to count on seats and votes.===

    Yes… or no.

    Do you support Dunkin.

===But for other target races around Illinois where the President is NOT a hugely popular guy? This could be a huge help in those places. The GOP could use this to lose one ally and gain 5-7 seats elsewhere.===

    Micro vs. Macro.

This Ad is against Dunkin, for Stratton, and why would any GOP Primary race about President Obama in this Micro?

    You make no sense.

Even Raunerites like Reggie and Benton aren’t effected by this.

  90. - A guy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 10:51 am:

===It’s a simple yes or no, do you support Ken Dunkin?===

Is this the big question you’re trying to get answered? From Me? Because it matters somehow?

I’ve supported some of Dunkin’s votes. Specifically the ones that most people here have harshly criticized him for. The same votes cast by the reps who reside in my area.

No matter the outcome of this race, Rep. Dunkin is there until January, and frankly, he’ll be empowered either way this election goes.

By then, it is my fervent hope and desire, that we don’t have to rely on any anomaly to sustain vetos. It’s my wish that we have several more members.

As for Rep. Dunkin’s district, I hope the people who live there get the result they desire.

  91. - low level - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 10:57 am:

Flunkin Dunkin is upset that his move to the Rauner cash and support has come with consequences. Oops.

(Btw- to quote Rich’s old “lets go back to the way way back machine”, Flunkin was more than happy to get MJM support when he was primaried in 2008.)

  92. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:00 am:

===Is this the big question you’re trying to get answered? From Me? Because it matters somehow?===

I just can’t understand how a self-professed GOP DuPage Precinct Captain can’t just say “I’m not for this person in the Democratic Primary”.

You approve of an alleged GOP Governor involved in Democratic Primaries to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars?

So yeah, after all your “GOP” chest pounding, I need… claification.

    ===I’ve supported some of Dunkin’s votes.====

The ones that directly hurt families or the ones denying college to students?

===By then, it is my fervent hope and desire, that we don’t have to rely on any anomaly to sustain vetos.===

So the thrice awarded, president of the “Century Club” Award is an admitted ally for you?

    Hmm.

Thought Rauner wanted to bulid the GOP… not create Blagojevich’s dream of a Governor’s Caucus, or Raunerites?

  93. - here we go - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:03 am:

I can’t stand Maze. There’s only so many ways you can stretch your political rhetoric. Let’s just pretend for a second that Maze uses a critical race theory framework to support what he says. Nope, it’s not even there. I think Maze and Dunkin by association live in their own little bubble and world. A part of me wants to feel for Dunkin, being used by Rauner. The other part of me, just does not care.

To the post, I do think Obama’s endorsement will help. Definitely help to raise Stratton’s credibility. But I am not sure it will translate to votes for her. I am genuinely concerned for the outcome of this particular race.

  94. - VanillaMan - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:04 am:

Now that the garlic clove necklaces are around his neck, the Obama silver stake pounded through his chest, perhaps we can finally stick a fork in Ken.

  95. - Stumpy's bunker - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:12 am:

Ken, the POTUS came back to Illinois to do “old home week”, and give a reflective speech on turf familiar to him. And during that speech, you saw fit to jump up and…well, be Ken Dunkin. At that point, you entered into POTUS’s political realm.

When you and Maze are, respectively, in charge of food & beverage operations and golf cart maintenance at the Winnetka Country Club, you’ll have plenty of time to Monday-morning-quarterback all your campaign utterances & antics.

  96. - Payback - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:15 am:

“…including siding with the National Rifle Association in voting for a law that made it easier for criminals to get guns…”

How has Rep. Dunkin voted with the NRA?

  97. - low level - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:25 am:

Stumpy’s Bunker - very well said. Agree 100%

  98. - Me too - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:27 am:

Dunkin is not going to have his seat for another nine months guy. Disciplinary proceedings will commence immediately following the primary, if not before. Madigan wanted to kick Ken out of the caucus, but was afraid of alienating the base. Now that there’s a vote buying scandal, he has the cover. It won’t be seen as simply going after the african american legislator who didn’t do as Mike said, now it is about going after a crooked legislator. There will be 71 votes again very soon don’t worry. We won’t even have to wait for the pick-ups in the fall.

  99. - @MisterJayEm - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:27 am:

“Has there ever been a sitting President before so petty that he’d get involved with a state legislative race?”

    Yeah! How petty!

Why didn’t Obama do the honorable and not-at-all petty thing, and compile a respectable Republican Enemies List??!?

    – MrJM

  100. - burbanite - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:31 am:

Obama served with Dunkin, as he said, “some people never change’. He knows exactly who and what Dunkin is, so in addition to Dunkin’s spinning his words to obscure their real meaning, Obama knows the guy is a snake and Illinois would be better off with his opponent.

  101. - low level - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 11:34 am:

As for Maze’s “Does this mean Rahm supports Stratton now”
He should ask Dunkin, as Dunkin supported Rahm for mayor last year…

  102. - Tinsel Town - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:09 pm:

I wonder if this is more of a slap by POTUS directed at Rauner for upsetting the apple cart?

  103. - Chicago Cynic - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:09 pm:

“Dunkin ally Maze Jackson just said on WVON radio that “the same person who gave us Rahm Emanuel” is now endorsing Dunkin’s opponent, and then asked rhetorically if that means Stratton is now backed by Rahm.”

Hey Maze - Newsflash: Ken will be gone soon so I’m not sure attacking the president of the United States is a really smart career move.

You might want to ask them S_Mom. They don’t see the billion bucks going to them at all. They do see the park land being reduced. They’re not happy campers. That relationship with U of C is always a little fragile.

BTW, you can’t help it. I’m still smitten.

  106. - A guy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:28 pm:

===I just can’t understand how a self-professed GOP DuPage Precinct Captain can’t just say “I’m not for this person in the Democratic Primary”.===

lol. I don’t know how it works in Oswego, but I can assure you I’ve never weighed in as a precinct committeeman on a Democratic primary. Chatted, kibitzed, answered a few questions, but never worked as a GOP precinct captain in a Dem primary. That Oswego area must be something else. lol. (Don’t go nuts. I actually love Oswego, even with you there-lol, but…it’s a day trip from where I live!

  107. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:33 pm:

===lol. I don’t know how it works in Oswego, but I can assure you I’ve never weighed in as a precinct committeeman on a Democratic primary.===

Then why is the Republican Bruce Rauner?

See, it’s a Raunerite thing, not a Republican thing.

You must be really upset that an alleged Republican Governor is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a “Democrat”…

    Right? Exactly right.

  108. - wordslinger - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:36 pm:

–I don’t know how this will play out. Stratton getting an endorsement from the President? That’s a bit much. Who’s exactly lined up on that side? That could have an adverse reaction in an area where churches and community leaders carry some extra weight. –

    Why is that?

–But for other target races around Illinois where the President is NOT a hugely popular guy? This could be a huge help in those places. The GOP could use this to lose one ally and gain 5-7 seats elsewhere.–

Where are the potential 5-7 GOP pickups that you see due to Obama’s endorsement of Stratton over Dunkin in the Democratic primary? Why would that be relevant, must less a “huge help,” in those races?

  109. - Rich Miller - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:40 pm:

===Why would that be relevant, must less a “huge help,” in those races?===

Dreamland is one of the 5-7 districts the GOP will pick up due to Obama’s endorsement. /s

  111. - A guy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 12:57 pm:

I should demand he fix the grammar first, but I can sort it out.

What do you think the strategy has been in those target races? Reps are doing Magidan’s bidding in those seats and working against their communities. Now, another not so popular guy in those places is weighing in. This effort to keep control that isn’t working for you goes from the Statehouse to the White House and back.

That’s one strategy. I’m sure there’s more. Back to dreamland now. Weird that you can view CF in dreamland and in perceived reality land. And even in real reality land. Quite a blog.

  112. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:06 pm:

===Reps are doing Magidan’s bidding in those seats and working against their communities.===

“Speaker Madigan and the legislators he controls”?

You’re going full Talking Point? You said nothing there.

How about all those Dem legislators who say they back the governor stand behind Rauner as he speaks from a podium and points to them and how they support Bruce Rauner.

===I can assure you I’ve never weighed in as a precinct committeeman on a Democratic primary.===

How upset are you that an alleged Republican Governor is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a “Democrat”…

We’ve been doing all the heavy lifting for what little recovery we’ve had, 47th. The problem is that each time we start getting our heads above water, Obama holds our heads under….

  114. - Joe Bidenopolous - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:10 pm:

===I’m sure Dunkin’s consolation prize will be a job in the Rauner administration.===

This assumes Rauner places significant value on showing loyalty to someone who probably can’t help him in the future. I don’t think that’s the way the dude’s wired. Ken will get his phone calls returned until January 2017 (if he’s not expelled prior), but after that he’s just not that useful unless Bruce wants to put together a minstrel show (and he might!).

  115. - Anonymous - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:17 pm:

    @Dem

=Yeah, because the Middle East had been a peaceful region before Obama came along.=

Compared to what happened after his and Hillary’s disastrous foreign policy, it was.

Obama inherited a stable Iraq, a much smaller civil war in Syria, a Yemen not under terrorist control, and Egypt that was a stable US ally and Libya under a despot that kept the terrorists from being empowered. Now, Iraq is a revenue source for ISIS that took the war to new level and spread the war thought out the region, Libya is in the hands of an even worse terrorist regime, and Egypt which needed a military coup to keep radicals there from supporting ISIS and starting a new Israeli conflict.

Much like Blago. He inherited a problem, and turned it into a crisis. Apparently he wants to do the same to Illinois politics…

Where are the 5-7 potential GOP pickups with the “Free Ken Dunkin” strategy?

    (Sigh)

    To bring this back…

===Where are the potential 5-7 GOP pickups that you see due to Obama’s endorsement of Stratton over Dunkin in the Democratic primary?===

I guess then GOP members should be endorsing Dunkin now, because beating Obama in that Micro District is about Rauner winning, isn’t it?

  118. - CharlieKratos - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:25 pm:

What about Rauner, who, “inherited a problem, and turned it into a crisis”, which he attempted to convert into “leverage” which became a disaster?

  120. - Demoralized - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:26 pm:

Ken Dunkin is the Ted Cruz of the Illinois Democratic caucus. Not a lot of warm and fuzzies coming from his fellow representatives right now. Just as Ted Cruz is about Ted Cruz, Ken Dunkin is about Ken Dunkin.

Look them up yourself. Only so much I can do for you. Only answered what I did in response to the owner of the blog. More sass than I like, but I gave him a pass that time.

  122. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 1:43 pm:

    Ugh.

    ===Look them up yourself.===

Either make your case when you’re called or understand that when you give your opinion and can’t give your opinion as to “why”, it adds nothing to your thoughts.

===Only so much I can do for you.===

Your opinion says 5-7, make the case. That’s how it works.

===Only answered what I did in response to the owner of the blog. More sass than I like, but I gave him a pass that time.===

Picking an argument with Rich when clearly it’s you being called our by others isn’t a great way to seem knowledgeable to your own opinion.

You say “5-7″… Make the argument. “Simple”

Ken Dunkin when asked about President Obama endorsing his opponent and allegations of illegal vote buying, “It’s basically an up day.”

  124. - NSideLady - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:04 pm:

The internals must be trending Stratton’s way. Wow. POTUS just endorsed in a state legislative race. POTUS probably has an approval rate near 70% in this district. Ken Dunkin is done.

  125. - wordslinger - Monday, Mar 7, 16 @ 2:10 pm:

–POTUS probably has an approval rate near 70% in this district.–

Gallup has Obama’s approval rating nationally among self-identified Democrats at 84%.

I can’t imagine it would be lower among Democratic primary voters in that district.

A Guy — Trust me, I am keenly aware of the University’s tenuous relationship with the surrounding neighborhoods. But I think there’s a real possibility that the Library will result in substantial upgrades to the Park — and that it will also create jobs for neighborhood residents.

(I also had a scathingly brilliant idea on how to win over the neighbors and the Friends of the Parks, but the University refused to listen.)
