Naptime open thread

Wednesday, Jun 1, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Kids, I’m gonna try to take me a little nap. Long, grueling, frustrating month, ending with an even longer day, then a late night and a very early morning. Coffee isn’t working. B-Complex isn’t working. Sleepy and a bit cranky. I often tell cranky commenters that they need a nap, so I’m taking my own advice.

Be nice to each other. Thanks.

    Cranky commenters? Hadn’t noticed.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:13 pm:

It feels like the day after a “party” and people are trying to get their bearings back…

From an email. Might be a good screen saver for the GA and Rauner & Co.:

    SIGNS OF A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

Have a good nap, Rich. Maybe when you wake up it will be 2019 and this can all be a bad dream . . .
    I’m taking a nap now.

  6. - BluegrassBoy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:18 pm:

Elsewhere…..the Cubs have the best record in Major League Baseball right now.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:20 pm:

As an aside, just on its face…

I’d like to go on the Guv’s tour. They picked some great towns.

You know what? We could all use a little nappin’ and restin’ and relaxin’

  10. - Joe M - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:20 pm:

I just want to say how much I appreciate Rich and Capitol Fax and the coverage provided. Especially grateful for the long hours Rich put in yesterday and last night. Capitol Fax is the best and sometimes the only place to obtain information about what is going on in Illinois politics.

  11. - Saluki - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:22 pm:

As a faithful Saluki. I am curious if anyone on the blog has a good Carbondale story to share. Maybe a rowdy party, or an SIU basketball game memory. That sounds like a better topic than all this insanity under the dome.

  12. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:24 pm:

I feel bad for Rich. It’s got to be rough seeing our state go to crap before his eyes when he knows how it should go. I can’t imagine the angst.

  13. - BBG Watch - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:25 pm:

Interesting how the Turn Around Agenda is off the table and has been replaced by the Rauner bridge . Purposefully to get the kids back to school and throw a few more crumbs to everyone else? I have a feeling this isn’t close to being played out. What about AFSCME and other state workers? Ugh!

  14. - Earnest - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:27 pm:

Things always seem brighter when you’ve had a little extra sleep. Well, at least they have under previous governors and throughout human history.

  15. - Stones - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:28 pm:

I bet that end of the session party at the Governors Mansion really sucked!

  16. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:30 pm:

Sure could use that missed service increase right about now..

  17. - State Worker THX 1138 - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:30 pm:

What happened to the re-vote on HB580? Is it still in play?

  18. - Excessively Rabid - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:30 pm:

As to the Cubs, I’m hopeful for them but it’s the first of June. Come on.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:30 pm:

Maybe the Governor should fly the entire General Assembly to the Rauner Ranch for a “Rauner Retreat”

Just 4 days, team building, trust exercises, workshops on communications, maybe some overpriced speaker that does 45 minutes on “win-win”…

… have movies every night, breakfast and you can’t sit with people you already know…

    No Caucus Meetings…

    … maybe a rodeo exhibition one night…

If Z would like to reach out to me, I’ll try to get him names and pertinent information to set this up.

I think it would do some real good.

    Oh… and it’s Mandatory… No Exceptions.

    No Staff too.

Maybe we should all hum a lullaby of “Nearer My God to Thee”.

(The hymn the quartet played on the deck of the Titanic as the ship went down.)

  24. - @MisterJayEm - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:34 pm:

‘Friendly Folk Fest Four’ is happening on June 3-4 in beautiful, downtown Berwyn. https://www.facebook.com/events/1718125795126955/permalink/1719341175005417/

Between Friendly Tap, Wire and Fitzgeralds, Berwyn has developed a live music district that would be the envy of a city ten-times its size.

Saluki. As a former Saluki myself (mid 80s), while our basketball team hadn’t reached the good level yet, we got to see some great talent at the Arena. I remember David Robinson (Navy) coming into town, Xavier McDaniel (Wichita State), but no one was as good a shooter as Hersey Hawkins from Bradley.

    Willy 1:30 … trust exercises.

Besides A Guy, I can’t think of anyone who’d do a blind fallback with Rauner on catch.

  28. - Amalia - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:39 pm:

    sweet dreams with Oscar!

  29. - Beaner - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:41 pm:

Does anyone know if medical cannabis is covered by Insurance? Is there a prescription drug co-pay?
Anyone else ticked off by the “finger-print” requirement. Oxycotin and Vicodin do not require any stickin’ fingerprinting. How much are the local constables charging for fingerprinting? $10 a finger?

  30. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:42 pm:

I’m moving and therefore sleeping erratically so I understand and empathize with Rich. Now that my stuff is all in one place I am hopeful I won’t waking at 4 AM making a list of stuff to be done today.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 1:42 pm:

    - PublicServant -

That’s where the facilitator steps in and pairs of people and you have to trust. It all needs to be hashed out I guess

    Maybe sunrise/sunset yoga?

    === So the R 7 didn’t turn ===

    No they didn’t. Vote Accordingly.

    HBO - “Dad’s Home State” - Season 2, Episode 33

Bruce takes off on a road trip, spends most of the morning trying to find the right props. Diana takes calls from groups wondering where their funding is, unplugs her office phone. Diana’s State Employee blocks all news channels on office cable. Lance tweets pictures of unused fields and cannabis seeds to Rep. Lang, “ck” sends an email touting all the not yet closed state parks, Goldberg sends a letter to the Police and Fire unions. Comedy, 64 minutes.

  43. - Earnest - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:05 pm:

What do you think Rich’s dreaming about?

  44. - lake county democrat - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:09 pm:

Travel tip for the day: chewing a pepto bismol tablet before meals when traveling greatly eliminates the chance of developing… intestinal difficulties. Seriously, google up Jane Brody’s article in the NY Times and/or some of the research cited therein - it’s pretty impressive.

  45. - Saluki - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:13 pm:

Steve Rogers, the basketball team has fallen from high places. I miss the days of 2000 - 2008 when the Saluki’s were making regular trips to the NCAA tournament. Coach Hinson is alright, but I dont have confidence he will lead the dawgs back to the promised land.

  46. - State Worker THX 1138 - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:37 pm:

You can not imagine the amount of demotivation that has built up in me since Rauner took office. I continue to do the best job I can and work every hour owed to the state (plus more). It is getting harder and harder not to just give in and be a stereotypical lazy state worker.

  47. - Chungas revenge - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 3:40 pm:

Saluki. I was there from 74 to 79.
Worked in or managed bars most of the time
To pay my way. I don’t know if you were down there at that time but most of my stories I have to worry about statutes of limitation.

“What happened to the re-vote on HB580? Is it still in play?”

    1. It died while you was not paying attention.
    2. NO!

  50. - Excessively Rabid - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 4:00 pm:

Better late than never, in my opinion anyway:

    Just blowing off steam. Relax.

  52. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 4:58 pm:

For those who support the governor’s tactics and objectives (real or spin-doctory), when and how did you have the epiphany that it was reasonable to sabotage core state responsibilities and inflict severe damage on citizens to advance a political agenda for which you cannot articulate any quantifiable benefits?

That’s a new thing, just in the last year. Never happened before in nearly 200 years.

I don’t think they taught that sort of thing in school. It’s a faith-based thing, right?

Fill us in, when you saw the light, and found the answer beyond reason.

  53. - PENSIONS ARE OFF LIMITS - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 6:07 pm:

They say millionaires are leaving the state in record numbers. I say just not the right one.

  54. - Lynn S. - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 6:12 pm:

    HI Rich!

Hope you had a nice nap.

It hasn’t been that long since your heart attack, so remember to exercise and rehab appropriately, eat healthily (not always fun, I know!!), and get the rest you need.

Spend quality time with Oscar, and post cute pix for the rest of us.

Just think, we’ve probably got 2 more years of this ahead of us…ugh…

  55. - Anon - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 7:14 pm:

—They say millionaires are leaving the state in record numbers. I say just not the right one.—

    Agreed. Madigan needs to go.

  56. - RNUG - Wednesday, Jun 1, 16 @ 9:45 pm:

I could of used a nap instead of fighting the reassembly of a Corvair engine compartment for a friend.

  57. - OurMagician - Thursday, Jun 2, 16 @ 8:55 am:

Exelon is following through with their threat, Clinton to close in 17, Quad Cities in 18. Another “win” for state government…
