Madigan responds to Rauner press conference

Wednesday, Jun 8, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From Speaker Madigan’s office…

Rauner Chooses Office Supplies over Life-Saving Services in Temporary Budget
House Democrats committed to compromise, but question Rauner’s refusal to fund vital needs

While Governor Rauner continues his campaign-style tour, laden with personal attacks against those with whom he says he wants to work cooperatively, we remain committed to finding a solution to the state budget crisis, including a temporary budget to ensure schools open on time.

There are very real concerns within our caucus about the governor’s proposal that need to be answered. By not funding many critical programs and services, the governor is putting office supplies ahead of cancer prevention. He refuses to fund grants for college students in financial need, which would kick many students out of school. In his plan, the governor refuses to fund life-saving breast cancer screenings for women and programs for domestic violence and sexual assault victims. The governor’s plan fails to fund programs that provide care to frail elderly residents.

The governor wants to fund many operations of state government, including the state’s vehicle fleet and office supplies instead of providing life-saving services for Illinoisans. We, and the people of Illinois that we serve, have very serious concerns with the governor refusing to fund these programs in his proposal. We are committed to negotiating with the governor to fund these programs within the temporary budget, but many questions remain.

Discuss.

…Adding… Senate President Cullerton is having a press conference today at 2. I’ll probably have a live coverage post, but click here for a live video stream.

Madigan-”The governor wants to fund many operations of state government, including the state’s vehicle fleet and office supplies instead of providing life-saving services for Illinoisans.”

Is there a way to “ground” Rauner’s use of the state fleet and ground his Runaround Tour??? When do those appropriations stop due to no funding???

  2. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:25 pm:

The Speaker is afraid to have a press conference. He did not speak after the session ended and is silent now.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:28 pm:

    Messaging?

    Raunerites - 1
    Madigan - 0

The message may be “better” by Madigan (ugh), but, again, Rauner’s Press Shop wins the day.

    Sorry.

  4. - New Slang - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:28 pm:

Cherry picking. EVERYONE is affected by BOTH of MJM and BR. State is in crisis. Agencies cannot provide services without equipment. Finger pointing by press release is so passè.

  5. - argh - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:31 pm:

You can’t govern by press conference or press release but at least Madigan had the decency to keep his rhetoric to the issues rather than name calling and personal attacks.

  6. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:39 pm:

the state’s flight department has been grounded for months.

  7. - Affected Taxpayer - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:43 pm:

“The Speaker is afraid to have a press conference…”

‘The Speaker has yet to hold a press conference.’

    Fixed it for you.

By your words, one can assume that the way to get MJM to hold said conference is for him to be triple-dog dared into doing so. Wow.

  8. - A guy - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:44 pm:

Dopey statement. It’s riddled with statements that reek of sarcasm and over the top enough for people to not take seriously. Really poorly written.

Even forgot to add the “middle class” in this one. Is a writer on vacation? This is a terribly done statement.

  9. - Huh? - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:47 pm:

OW, I am going to disagree about the messaging. Paper clips versus cancer screening is the message that Madigan sent out. That is the strong message.

1.4% will always have the press reporting what he says because of the office he allegedly holds. Whereas Madigan is selective about his press conferences.

  10. - lake county democrat - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:48 pm:

People have to be tuning this out by now - maybe that’s the point?

  11. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:50 pm:

If there is no flight service, how in the world did Rauner do the first day of the RunAround Tour? There is no way he met all those timeframes for the stops by caravan. And if he did, some major traffic laws were broken. Is he using Ken’s jet????

  12. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:52 pm:

    - Huh? -

    Let me “rephrase”…

Getting the message to resonate and be effective in reports, columns, and tv reports?

    Raunerites - 1
    Madigan - 0

Sorry, Rauner’s Press Shop, again won the day.

    With respect.

  13. - Norseman - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 1:57 pm:

As Willy noted, the Madigan message was good but failed counter the show put on by Rauner.

Cullerton and Madigan need to meet and come up with a strategy and run full speed with it - media messages and legislatively. Otherwise they’ll be eaten alive with this constant Rauner media circus.

===Cullerton and Madigan need to meet and come up with a strategy and run full speed with it - media messages and legislatively.===

    Ball Game, bud. Ball Game.

It’s not in the facts that Madigan is falling behind, it’s in the Salesmanship. It’s not an accident that Rauner’s Press Shop, inept at times as they are, continue to win the daily media game.

    Sorry.

  15. - illini - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:30 pm:

Agreeing with Willy that the Rauner shop probably got the better of the dueling press conferences today.

Maybe MJM and JC need to designate their “Official Owl” to field and answer the difficult questions!

  16. - RNUG - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:33 pm:

== It’s not in the facts that Madigan is falling behind, it’s in the Salesmanship. It’s not an accident that Rauner’s Press Shop, inept at times as they are, continue to win the daily media game. ==

If you spend enough money to constantly repeat propaganda, people will eventually believe it.

  17. - Annonin' - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 2:58 pm:

Day 1 Summer of Hate Tour II he “drove” about 776 miles…Guessin that puts the speeds at about 120 mph once they are of view…probably multiple cars with lights blazin’

  18. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 3:02 pm:

GPS or MapQuest has yet to be successful… in winning the messaging day against Rauner’s Press Shop….

  19. - Anon221 - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 3:16 pm:

I agree, OW, but sometimes the details of how a message was delivered can be useful.

  20. - Harry - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 3:33 pm:

I wonder what either of them think they are accomplishing at this point. Their respective bases are with them no matter what, and everyone else is just fed up with the both of ‘em.
