When snowflakes become a snowstorm

Monday, Feb 6, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Friday

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-6th) is scheduled to attend a closed meeting of the Palatine Township Republican Organization Saturday morning and will likely be greeted by protesters demanding a public meeting with area residents to address concerns about the Trump Administration.

Roskam is scheduled to appear at the Palatine Township Republican Headquarters, 765 N. Quentin Rd., Palatine, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Activists from three Palatine-area groups — 6th District of Illinois - Holding Peter Roskam Accountable, Action 6th District Illinois and Palatine After March Action Group, formed since President Trump’s inauguration — are organizing the protest outside the Palatine Township Republican Organization meeting set for tomorrow.

“I’m going to put them on the parkway, they’re not coming into my meeting and we’re not going to answer their questions,” Palatine Township Republican Committeeman Aaron Del Mar told the Journal & Topics Thursday. “We’re not going to infringe on their freedom of speech. I bet there’s going to be three people (protesters). I bet we have 100 people at our meeting.” [Emphasis added.]

* Saturday

About 400 protesters jeered U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam of Wheaton outside in freezing temperatures on Saturday while he met with about 100 members inside the Palatine Township Republican Organization office in Palatine.

* 400 is quite a bit more than 3, last time I checked. Click here for ABC News raw video which features protesters gamely chanting “We are more than three.”

* Del Maar was not impressed…

Liberals probably ought to embrace the “snowflake” slam. Snowflakes are complicated, no two are alike, they can be easily blown away, but enough of them together can create real problems…

* Semi-related…

* Rodney Davis: No plans for C-U meeting

* Rodney Davis won’t do a town hall meeting because he doesn’t do “grandstanding events”

* People swamp Congress with calls in era of Trump: The past few weeks have caused headaches for members of Congress and their staff. But so far, the deluge of calls has not caused much of an issue for U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis. Ashley Phelps, a spokeswoman for the Taylorville Republican, said Friday that they have seen a small uptick in phone calls, mostly centered around possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act and recent executive orders signed by President Donald Trump concerning immigration.

    They’re starting to.

These constituent-meeting problems are so stupid. Just meet your damn voters. Let them yell at you if they want. Unless you lose your mind, too, you’ll come out looking better. It’s not like press pops like this are preferable.

  2. - Highland IL - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 9:58 am:

Dear Representative Roskam - Rodney Davis thinks you are “grandstanding” with your fancy town hall meetings.

  3. - Aldyth - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 9:59 am:

I’d like a show of hands for all those under the age of 60 who attended the meeting in Palatine? I daresay that the people who stood out in the cold were considerably younger than the average age of the Palatine Republicans. Doesn’t bode well over the long term for the Republican organization.

  4. - wordslinger - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:03 am:

I wouldn’t presume that everyone who wants to confront Roskam about ACA is a “liberal.”

From reports around the country where GOP legislators are ducking constituents, many are people scared about losing health coverage.

Running from constituents is just weak and, ultimately, self-defeating, as you look like a coward to all. Cowboy up, Congressman, you wanted the gig.

There is an article in the New York Times today about groups and people on the left, and other snowflakes, adopting the tactics of the Tea Party from last decade. I know people of been advocating for that for A couple of years. Seems that it is coming to pass.

  6. - JoeMaddon - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:09 am:

400 people showing up to protest a Republican in the NW Suburbs is unheard of. I don’t really think that Roskam will really be vulnerable, but the anti-Trump energy all of the place is just crazy.

The old people vote more consistently, though.

    We are. Winter is coming

  9. - slow down - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:16 am:

The amazing thing is that there is virtually no effort to even make a counter argument to those concerned about losing their healthcare.

They’re either completely ignored (as we see from Roskam and Davis) or they’re lied to with the claim that they’re going to replace the ACA with “something better” (Paul Ryan’s words).

Yet that “something better” has still not been identified or explained despite the fact that the likes of Roskam, Davis and Ryan have voted to repeal the ACA more than 40 times over the last 5-6 years.

People should be mad and energized.

None of this is surprising, but a lot of this is tilting at windmills. People are going on Congressmen Shimkus’s and LaHood’s social media pages and telling them that they will be voted out in 2018. Come on…really?! There is a difference between wishful thinking and crazy talk. Darin LaHood cleared 72% in a year with a candidate who performed worse than George W. Bush in 2004 and John Shimkus had NO competition whatsoever. Those guys are doing nowhere. Even a guy like Mike Bost is really not in remote danger of losing his seat. Rodney Davis?! Yes, he should be concerned. But the map is so gerrymandered that it would take perfect recruitment and mounds of unprecedented cash to take out a guy like Peter Roskam or Randy Hultgren.

  11. - Anonymous - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:18 am:

I am surprised that a savvy politician like Roskam would want to be seen with someone like the scandal plagued Del Mar. Roskam would have done better to hold his meeting in Schaumburg Township or Wheeling Township rather than going to Palatine.

  12. - HL Mencken - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:28 am:

Rodney thinks meetings are grandstanding. Instead he goes on talk radio in central Illinois, takes softball questions that he answers with stock responses and has not yet told us one specific thing he will do to replace the Affordable Care Act.

  13. - DuPage Saint - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:28 am:

I saw it written some place thar when a bunch of snowflakes come together they form an avalanche Not only is that crowd a tad on the elderly side the diversity of it is hard to miss

  14. - Hit or Miss - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:29 am:

===they’re not coming into my meeting and we’re not going to answer their questions===

I am not sure that this is how a well run democracy operates.

  15. - W Flag - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:30 am:

Good to see that Bob Cremer’s sign printer is still doing business with his tell a tale posters which were obvious in the video.

  16. - Amalia - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:31 am:

Roskam and company should just thank their lucky stars that there is not a local version of Saturday Night Live where they could be lampooned. Note that based on Melissa McCarthy’s epic takedown of Sean Spicer…funniest thing maybe ever….that those opposing Republicans are getting heated in creative and deeply strong ways. Doublespeak and excuses will be called out. which side are you on for healthcare?!?

Being known as the “herbal tea party”

Don’t count on them not being primaried. .

When I called Rep. Davis phone Friday evening, his voicemail box was full and I couldn’t leave a message!

  19. - JS Mill - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:43 am:

The name calling by elected leaders is always a sign of statesmanship.

  20. - Anonymous - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 10:54 am:

@Joe Maddon: How many people were actual residents of Palatine as opposed to being recruited to take part in the demonstration from someplace else?

@Hit or Miss: Your point is taken, but Roskan was addressing a political party gathering as opposed to hosting a Congressional Town Hall event. It is not unusual for political meetings to be closed to the general public.

  21. - Anon0091 - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:10 am:

Anonymous 1054 - these people are generally not recruited. There are organic protests springing up everywhere. 100+ showed up in Wilmette this past weekend for example. Keep assuming these people are recruited by some bigger force and you’ll totally miss what’s happening here.

  22. - A-nonny-nonny - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:17 am:

The protest was great…but it was a priceless statement on the current woes if government when del Mar told us, “Next time, buy a ticket and you can come inside”. Grr.

  23. - Anonymous - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:17 am:

Rep. Davis: do you participate in parades? Those events where you are not bothered by protesters, i.e. accountability?
Big waves and smiles to garner votes….that isn’t grandstanding?

  24. - Way South of I-80 - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:20 am:

Determined long ago it is a complete waste of time to call Davis. He ignores what he doesn’t agree with.

  25. - yinn - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:21 am:

100+ showed up to talk to Rep. Kinzinger’s “traveling office” staff in DeKalb last Thursday at 9am.

  26. - Hon Don Gerard - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:33 am:

Weird…I shared this on my facebook page and cited the part about Rodney Davis and folks immediately started commenting they get a busy signal or the mailbox is full or they get no response at all when making a request for interview or to speak to groups…maybe he needs to switch to Verizon?

  27. - Curl of the Burl - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:50 am:

10:33 - but then that would mean they would be challenged by MORE conservative persons. Moderate-leaning Republicans do not play well in the 15th & 18th CDs - even at the local level.

  28. - walker - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 11:56 am:

The bulk of the people at Roskam protest were local, i.e. from his district. Also most were from brand new or newly rejuvenated grass roots organizations.

  29. - Curl of the Burl - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 12:39 pm:

Anon0091 - considering the fact that the same accusations were made of the TEA Party in 2009 and 2010 then (as I posted in the earlier story about the ILGOP’s take on Lisa Madigan) then turnabout is fair play.

  30. - GV - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 1:46 pm:

If Rodney Davis’ busy phones and full voicemail boxes only indicate a small uptick, then his staff needs to improve or he is lying. Either issue needs to be fixed.

  31. - Illinoisvoter - Monday, Feb 6, 17 @ 2:36 pm:

Thank you so much for the video. For those of us here in the Illinois 6th who remember how Tammy
Duckworth “cut and ran from Iraq” it does confirm
Keith Olbermann’s assessment as the worst person
    in the world. (10/2/06)

  32. - Union Thug Gramma - Tuesday, Feb 7, 17 @ 8:58 am:

Remember, snowflakes cause blizzards…and winter is coming to those who want to take away our rights.
