Misadventures in campaigning

Tuesday, Sep 12, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the Kennedy folks…

Dan Biss seems to have made a trend in echoing Chris Kennedy’s message - big and small. Three examples:

1) Chris’s property tax rollout speech (May 30) came before Dan Biss’s HOME plan that he sent in a fundraising email titled Enough talk: (June 20). During Chris’s May 30 speech, he also called it a “racket” which is the same word Biss used in his June 20 email.

2) Chris joked with a tracker in a photo posted to Cap Fax (July 13) and then Dan Biss did the same thing on his social media (July 15)

3) Chris has long been calling our property tax system “rigged” (July 18 tweet) and says we need to lessen our dependence on property taxes and fully fund education at the state level. He’s also called on a statewide ban on having elected officials serve as property tax attorneys.

Daniel Biss posted on Facebook yesterday delivering the same message using the same language: “rigged.” (screen shot below).

* The screen shot…

* Meanwhile, speaking of borrowing phrases…

* Kennedy appears to have missed yet another gubernatorial forum…

* Uh-oh…

* And Kennedy’s campaign is advertising via listserv for a Deputy Finance Director…

High-profile Illinois gubernatorial race seeking a Deputy Finance Director to begin immediately. The Deputy Finance Director will help develop and execute the finance plan including reporting all contributions, managing prospect and donor follow-up and planning and staffing events. The Deputy Finance Director will report to Finance Director and work closely with senior leadership. Must be in or willing to relocate to Chicago by October 1.

They keep saying that the alleged “retool” is actually a bulking up as the primary nears. And they most certainly do need somebody else raising money because, man, the fundraising reports are not great. So, perhaps this is a positive story. We’ll see.

I feel like Biss is just about the last person Kennedy needs to be worry about right now?

  2. - John Rawlsss - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:34 am:

Wow, kennedy campaign just straight up whining.

  3. - Periwinkle - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:34 am:

Wow…incredibly petty move by Kennedy. Just looks childish.

  4. - TopHatMonocle - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:37 am:

I guess skipping debates and not collecting signatures leaves you with a lot of time to catch up on social media and emails.

  5. - Century Club - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:42 am:

That is a bad sign when you are picking on a candidate in single digits. Also, does Kennedy’s team think anyone is gong to be running a pro-property tax campaign?

  6. - Anon0091 - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:44 am:

Politics 101: Punch up, not down. Geez, talk about amateur hour.

  7. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:44 am:

I’m glad someone is calling out absentee Alderman Ameya Pawar for the uptick in crime in the 47th Ward while he visits Annawan on his quixotic campaign for Governor.

  8. - cdog - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:44 am:

The Google-god says I used the word “racket” in a post on April 4. /s

  9. - Deft Wing - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:45 am:

A small move by Kennedy indeed. Funny thing is, doesn’t the latest polls still have Kennedy way ahead?

Also, this blog has beaten up Kennedy about his physical appearance, especially his not-so-camera ready smile, but has taken a pass at JB’s pretty massive girth. Look, JB ain’t walking the campaign trail that’s for sure, and by the looks of his rather conspicuous size, a rather large health issue is being ignored.

  10. - PJ - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:46 am:

None of the things did Biss are in way unusual. It’s a primary; everyone talks about the same issues. And it was literally the same tracker that came to Biss’ event after Kennedy’s; it’s not like he planned that.

Kennedy continues to run the worst campaign by a country mile. This is just bizarre.

  11. - Ghost - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:48 am:

Biss used the word The at the start of a sentence, but Kennedy who was born earlier used it first. Biss wesrs pants and eats food, but kennedy wore pants and ate food first.

the battle of the also rans

  12. - Gooner - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:48 am:

So Biss used cliches commonly used by Democrats? Well, that means we need to vote for Kennedy, who claims to be first use the given cliches during this race.

This all makes Kennedy look ridiculous. I thought he was going to run a real race but we are getting to the point (as I noted on a prior thread) that I have doubts that he makes the ballot.

  13. - MOON - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:48 am:

Rich should have as his question of the day

Please define the taxable income one needs to be considered wealthy and what is a fair amount the wealthy should pay…as a percentage of their taxable income

  14. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:49 am:

I guess Kennedy was at all these “record-setting” rallies instead of the forum.

That, or going through his iPhone calling anyone he’s talked to in the past 2 years to be his running mate.

    One or the other…

  15. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:49 am:

Seriously, the Kennedy campaign needs to run want ads to staff up?

After lifetimes spent in legendary political families, Kennedy and Daley don’t have networks they can plug into for staff? They’re soliciting strangers off the street?

For crying out loud, Daley ran a presidential campaign, was a private sector macher, a cabinet member and WH COS.

He doesn’t have people he can call?

  16. - Piece of Work - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:50 am:

This campaign shows why Kennedy performed so poorly as the head of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.

  17. - Emanuel Collective - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 11:55 am:

I’m a 47th Ward resident. There haven’t even been a dozen armed robberies in the ward this year, much less the last two weeks.

  18. - Robert the Bruce - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 12:02 pm:

Has anyone asked Kennedy why he keeps missing candidate forums?

  19. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 12:10 pm:

    Headline?

“Kennedy Wants Five Televised Debates: Promises to attend at least three.”

  20. - WSJ Paywall - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 12:45 pm:

Kennedy’s campaign continues to be an embarrassment.

  21. - Ghost - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 12:47 pm:

Kennedy heard show up neat and tidy or dont show up at all…

  22. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 1:05 pm:

Pritzker’s been running job ads for months in various places. Not as uncommon as people here are making it.

  23. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 1:29 pm:

    47th Ward: Nice shot.

  24. - Montrose - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 1:50 pm:

So, is Kennedy’s campaign trying to point out they like Biss’ messaging? Or their messaging can’t be that bad if another candidate is saying the same thing? Or that Biss should hire them for his campaign staff since he seems to like their style?

  25. - Anonish - Tuesday, Sep 12, 17 @ 2:47 pm:

Casting a net for FOs is a far cry from trying to get a deputy finance director to come on with 6 months left in the race.

  26. - DuPage Bard - Wednesday, Sep 13, 17 @ 12:01 am:

Anyone have a poll showing Kennedy is losing? Last polls I saw had Kennedy at 44% anyone have anything different?
Until then let me know when someone else is winning.

  27. - Anon0091 - Wednesday, Sep 13, 17 @ 1:22 am:

    DuPage,

That poll is more than two months old and a lot has happened since then. I’m hoping Rich does a poll soon.
