*** UPDATED x1 - Ad is “shameful” *** Rauner still hasn’t commented directly on the Ives ad, but will he tonight?
Saturday, Feb 3, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller [Comments are now open on this post.] * Background is here in case you need it. ILGOP…
* And…
* OK, but keep in mind that Gov. Rauner’s campaign never once mentioned Ives’ ad in his official statement yesterday…
Whether it’s refusing to comment on a cartoon that was deemed racist, or saying “What doesn’t matter is definitions” when asked if a Neo-Nazi attack was domestic terrorism, or when he wouldn’t call David Duke a racist, the man has real trouble with stuff like this. This Ives ad is a meatball right over the plate. But instead of taking a swing himself, he’s making everybody else - from fellow Republicans, to the news media, to activists, to Democrats - do his work for him. * The governor will have the perfect opportunity to say something this evening. From tonight’s Equality Illinois fundraising gala schedule…
If he doesn’t say something tonight, then he’ll probably again have to be dragged into reacting and that won’t be a good look. * Meanwhile, one of the weirdest things about the controversy surrounding Ives’ ad was that some of her supporters were apparently so freaked out by the spot that they took to social media to accuse others of fabricating the ad to make Ives look bad. For instance, here’s somebody claiming I made the ad myself… * This guy posted several tweets accusing the CS-T of fabricating the story…
The Ives campaign had confirmed it was her ad hours before he wrote that tweet. * But other Ives supporters are taking this route…
Also, to those on the left side of the equation who said the ad was merely a PR ploy by Ives and would never actually air, Chicago-area folks are telling me they’ve been seeing the ad on their teevees today. *** UPDATE *** Here you go…

Ives wasn’t viable prior to this ad. After a week of “controversy”, she’ll be within striking distance.
Brilliant.

the ad is offensive, but I appreciate that Ives is being forthright about her racism, as opposed to the more subtle racism of a Nixon or reagan.
- Cubs in '16 - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:21 am:
The Republicans aren’t offering a palatable (for me) candidate so now it comes down to choosing which Dem candidate to vote for. If the Illinois Republican Party wants this indie voter they’re going to have to do better than Rauner and Ives.
- Retired Educator - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:22 am:
The Ives ad does one thing. It gives her media coverage. I quote “The only thing worse then being talked about, is not being talked about.” She is being talked about, and name recognition will help her in the long run.
- Demoralized - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:23 am:
Rep Ives ad represents the absolute worst in politics. Though she should be ashamed she won’t be. This ad represents her beliefs. She’s never hidden them so this type of thing shouldn’t be a surprise.
- Cheryl44 - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:24 am:
If she were honest/brave she would have made the immigrant bandit look more Latino.
- Moe Berg - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:25 am:
Ultimately, Rauner knows that he’s going to need the votes of the troglodytes to whom the Ives ad appeals. He will continue to be very elliptical in his criticism of Ives, lest those folks go voting libertarian or just skip the governor’s race.
- ItsMillerTime - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:25 am:
The fact that the article after this talks about Ives getting another 2 million from Uihlein shows how there are plenty of Republicans willing to reward this short of behavior. We will see how much it benefits her at the end but right now she’s growing her fanatic support base while Rauner blunders about like a drunk elephant.
- Ducky LaMoore - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:25 am:
This ad did exactly what she wanted it to do. A whole lot of people now know her name.
- Annonin' - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:27 am:
“Take a breath”
Whyyyyyy? The whack jobs are under full sail. Bill Brady just fumbled through 18 painful minutes trying to defend GovJunk. he cited the ed bill that went from bein’ a vetoed “Chicago bailout” to a historic, national accomplishment just because a loophole for private school give aways was created.
Hope the GOPies don’t go too far left runnin’ from Ives ..tee hee.
- Rich Miller - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:30 am:
===shows how there are plenty of Republicans willing to reward===
It shows there is one Republican willing to reward this behavior.
- Rabid - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:33 am:
ILGOP name calling their own candidate a coward, what about a debate
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:34 am:
===Ives getting another 2 million from Uihlein shows how there are plenty of Republicans willing to reward this short of behavior.===
You cite a single donor with a 7 figure donation and equating it with “plenty” of Republicans?
This is why the measuring of how many donors versus amount of monies raised is a better benchmark.
If Uihlein didn’t give the $2 million, would you say Ives has very little Republican support?
- Mouthy - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:36 am:
This is a move out of Trump’s playbook. Say things so outrageous that you’re going to be noticed no matter what. Worry about converting that recognition to votes later. It’s the only way she’s going to have a chance at winning so politically it’s a very smart move. Morally, well, that’s a whole different story….
- Demoralized - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:39 am:
The Governor is either unwilling or unable to ever call a spade a spade. Why he can’t seem to ever bring himself to comment on easy issues baffles me. He apparently can’t deviate from his “because Madigan” message. The man is completely incapable of thinking on his feet.
- Arsenal - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:39 am:
The question is if Uihlein is an outlier among Republicans. Frankly, historically, he hasn’t proven to be that far from the herd.
Anyone who doesn’t like this ad should be prepared for Ives to grow. You can’t count on someone else to take her out for you.
- Anonymous - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:51 am:
So when does the Governor actually fight his own battles? Rauner dodged this for a couple days, as usual, then really said nothing. Now he has his bought and paid for minions attack.
BTW if you think Jeanne isn’t having an impact just keep watching news stories looking to target her. Rauner’s team can’t outright attack so they’ll drop info to friendly press folks. Watch for a Jim Dey editorial shortly saying she’s unelectable and that Rauner is really trying but it’s not his fault.
- Anonymous - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 9:55 am:
Also thank goodness looks like Radical Candor is back in the fold with the Rauner team after their falling out in July over the staff purge. Guess all is bought for, oops sorry, meant forgiven.
- Da Big Bad Wolf - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 10:17 am:
==So politically this is a very smart move.==
It’s only a smart move if you really don’t want to win.

Isn’t your remark offensive?
- True - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 10:41 am:
Yeah it’s really shameful when someone holds you accountable for your actions and then calls you out in public on it

==- If she were honest/brave she would have made the immigrant bandit look more Latino. -

It would be offensive to someone not familiar with Ives. A Latino bandit would be a fair representation of what Ives has said publicly over her years as a member of the GA. I just assumed they couldn’t find a Latino actor.
- Retired Educator - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 11:54 am:
She just got 2 million more from Uihlein. I wonder if the next attack add is already in the can, and ready to go. She may not win, but the damage will last along time.
- Reese's Pieces - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 12:08 pm:
Westerfield. That dude will do anything to get himself some name recognition…he’s a write-in candidate for the 99th District Rep seat, and an all-around alarmist on every local social media page. He’s the nobody, that nobody asked for.
- rivvedup - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 12:09 pm:
I’ve tried taking offense at Ives’ ad, but just can’t get there. Not only is her ad a fair statement of the facts of Rauner’s decisions and actions, but where is it written that you can’t use sarcasm in a political ad? Ives is obviously spoofing Rauner’s “Thank You” ad (which backfired greatly with viewers), and dared to have actors represent the groups which allegedly benefit from Rauner’s bill signings. So what? Who cares? The ad is not sexist or racist. Save your outrage for something worthwhile.
- Gary Kleppe - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 12:19 pm:
“The ad is designed to offend those that will never vote for us anyways.” True. But bad news for them, that includes most of the state.
- Anon - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 12:43 pm:
How is it racist? It’s not a Latino bandit. It’s a “hooded activist” (how Antifa was described in another article).
- Da Big Bad Wolf - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 12:53 pm:
Anon, the guy in the bandana is holding a sanctuary sign. I guess he could be a twofer, a Dreamer who is also Antifa.
- TKMH - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:15 pm:
=How is it racist?==
Having the lone African-American actress in the ad thank the Gov. for a “Chicago bailout” echoes Fox News dog whistles about, you know, “Chicago” (emphasis on the scare quotes) and all that comes with it.
- Mr. Smith - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 2:20 pm:
What a shame that Ms. Ives couldn’t get Arthur Jones to run with her. They could have called their campaign stops the “dogwhistlestop” tour.
Are e certain that the ILGOP isn’t really staging a very weird production of “The Producers”?
- Da Big Bad Wolf - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 2:30 pm:
Mr. Smith, I had made the same connection. Ives’ campaign reminds me of “the Producers.” I got banned because I mentioned “Springtime for H”. Lol.
- Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 2:39 pm:
I guess the Governor couldn’t call upon Evelyn Sanguinetti to retort the ad?
What does she do?
Seriously.
- The Snowman - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 3:25 pm:
Many of you are faking outrage, but if the shoe were on the other foot, and a commercial was using the same tone poking at traditional subjects of faith, nuclear family, and patriotism, we’d be hearing crickets chirping around you.
- Demoralized - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 3:30 pm:
Another victim heard from.
- Da Big Bad Wolf - Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 3:31 pm:
Snowman, I’m having a hard time imaging it. Was there an ad for a politician that did this, so I can see how I would react?
