Rauner escapes criticism in gun rights hotbed

Wednesday, Jul 18, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* NRA President Oliver North is hosting a state legislative campaign fundraiser tomorrow in Effingham, where the state’s “gun sanctuary” movement began. From a Facebook ad…

Tickets can be purchased here.

An Evening with Col. Oliver North

Posted by Darren Bailey for State Representative 109th District on Friday, July 13, 2018

Illinois Republican state treasurer candidate Jim Dodge sent out a media advisory yesterday announcing he will be attending the event as well.

* By chance, Gov. Rauner was in Effingham yesterday on a campaign swing to promote his FireMikeMadigan.com website…

* Back in the day, Effingham was considered a swing county. Democrat Neil Hartigan won it in 1990 and Glenn Poshard took it in 1998. Comptroller Dan Hynes and Secretary of State Jesse White both won it in 2002. Attorney General Lisa Madigan prevailed in 2006. And Sen. Dick Durbin managed a win in 2008.

But Donald Trump won it by 60 points and the last statewide Democrat to win the county was Secretary White way back in 2010. It’s solidly GOP now. White lost the county by 17 points four years ago.

* After his anti-Madigan event, Rauner was asked about his signature on some recent gun-control legislation

On Monday, Rauner had signed a law extending the waiting period in Illinois for all firearms to 72 hours. Previously, the limit was 72 hours for handguns and 24 hours for other firearms. Rauner called it a common-sense reform that respects the Second Amendment and improves public safety.

It runs directly counter to the Effingham County firearms sanctuary resolution.

“I respect the passion that those who defend the Second Amendment have,” Rauner said. “And I support the Second Amendment as well. I’m not familiar with all the resolutions that have been passed at the county level. I believe that, as a state, we should protect and defend the Constitution and the Second Amendment, while also finding thoughtful ways to help increase public safety.”

But the local party chairman did his best to be nice

Effingham County Republican Chairman Rob Arnold was present at the stop. As an Effingham County Board member, he voted in favor of the sanctuary resolution. Arnold said it’s clear Rauner agrees with the county’s way of thinking, but differs in specifics.

Arnold isn’t just a gun sanctuary proponent. He wanted to put the sanctuary issue up for a popular vote this November, but his idea was recently rejected by his fellow county board members.

* Part of the idea behind the whole “Madigan, taxes, corruption, toilets - lather, rinse, repeat” is to try and convince Republicans to forget about his divisive primary fight with Jeanne Ives and get them to focus on unifying ahead of November.

Rauner lost Effingham County to Rep. Ives by 14 points, 57-43. But his post-primary tack is apparently working with people like Arnold.

The most charitable thing you can call Ollie North is “disgraced felon”. What a treat to see him leading the esteemed NRA.

    Match made in heaven.

Your analysis exclude’s Edgar’s huge margin and Ryan’s win. Why?

  4. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 12:51 pm:

One of my favorite memories of Effingham County was that it was the source of some of the finest homegrown marijuana ever produced in Illinois (this was in the 1980s). “EGB” as my buddies called it, Effingham Green Bud. It was locally famous in certain circles across central and southern Illinois back then.

I guess those stoners grew up to be conservatives. Strange, but hardly unique. I’d always imagined Effingham would be the Detroit of a legal MJ industry, it seemed a perfect location to start legal cultivation here.

Given the conservative bent evident in recent election results, I wonder if there’d be any interest in this if Illinois ever does legalize MJ?

Is North bringing any NRA Russian lady friends with him?

47th Ward, a few local articles for your recreational reading pleasure:

    Effingham rejects farm proposal-

The good stuff hailed from west of Effingham up along the Kaskaskia river. Less market with medicinal now legally available, but some still prefer the Country Boy Will Survive lifestyle.

Effingham has managed to keep its head just enough above water to not have widespread crime, poverty, or too much drug use (Heroin is coming on strong) and just low enough to prevent wages from impacting employer investment *cough…Walmart Distribution Center in Olney instead of Effingham…cough*

Regarding the event, I found it interesting that several friends in the area didn’t express any interest in attending. A general admission of $50 is probably slowing down the participation to an extent. Even though it is just a snapshop of the event, Facebook Events shows only 72 attending, but over 350 interested in the event. I would have expected the perception of more traction.

I wonder if the Democrats will use Mr. Norths appearance with the multiple Republican candidates that are planning to attend the event in future TV spots?

If a party wishes to win elections, it needs to start by listening respectfully to the voters.

It’s sad to see one party dominate a region. A lack of political competition is not good for anyone.

I live in Effingham. Yesterday I was taking a walk and on one street corner there were a couple of signs stuck in the ground. One was for a gun shop or shooting range, the other was right to life. And in the background, in the distance, was the big white cross beside I-57/70. Yup, I thought, that pretty well sums things up. Not that that’s good or bad. Just sayin’s all.

What does Arnold say about this guy’s way of thinking, specifically? Is that kosher within his “sanctuary?”

Very true. But sadly virtually every big city in the nation is run by one party and we all know which one

North, given immunity but involved in Iran Contra, in other words, not legal stuff. NRA….National Russian Association? Reporter last hour said that Wayne La Pierre and pals are quaking because of the red headed Russian woman (arrested) they worked with. the NRA is not looking like a very patriotic organization.

    ===Your analysis exclude’s Edgar’s huge margin and Ryan’s win. Why? ===

Because, clearly to sane people, the point was that the county used to vote for the occasional Democrat. Hence the term “swing.”

    Go take a nap.

  16. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Wednesday, Jul 18, 18 @ 3:37 pm:

Was right the other day when suspecting Rauner would be given a pass on signing this bill. Media should change descriptions from “gun rights supporters” to “republican only supporters”. Dems like Phelps would never have been forgiven for this, but always good to have one more counter example to throw back at the snowflakes.

That video sounds like a campaign video in Mississippi.

Come on down y’all, big time He-ro Ollie North, gonna drive all the way down here to helps us keep our guns and go after them liberal Chicago commies.

@ Amalia- strange that the NRA has been pretty much radio silent since the news of the Russian Lolita infiltrator came out.

Maybe they are working on new red, blue, and white banner like trump (by the way-the exact color scheme of Putin’s plane).

Good to know that the Dem partisans are losing sleep over Russia’s involvement in US policy. I wish a past Dem president would have been equally alarmed.
