State Fair open thread

Wednesday, Aug 15, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I have to head to the fairgrounds. I’ll be bringing my laptop with me, but I just don’t know how much I’ll be posting today. In the meantime, keep an eye on the live coverage post for constant updates (click here).

Please, be nice to each other in comments, and try your very best to keep the discussion Illinois-centric. Thanks.

LA Transit authority just installed electronic scanning in subways. Anyone opposed to an install at problematic housing projects?

===LA Transit authority just installed electronic scanning in subways. Anyone opposed to an install at problematic housing projects?===

What’s the connection between public transit and public housing?

    Oh, right. Racism.

How about security. Tenants like protection too.

I’m still waiting for the fried cannoli vendor to find its way to the fair…

The fried Twinkies are a solid substitute, but…

Big IPTA tractor pull tonight. See ya there.

  8. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 11:38 am:

Anyone been to the Fair? How are the crowds? Exhibits? How’s the food?

  9. - Fixer - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 12:07 pm:

OW, as someone that hasn’t been to the fair in about two decades, is that an actual thing there?

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 12:09 pm:

    - Fixer -

Deep fried cannoli is a real thing, found at state fairs, in Delaware, for example.

My hope is that next year we in Illinois will have this tasty treat.

I might lean toward any candidate for governor that will make that a priority in 2019

    I might lean…

Yet another Chicago aldercreature to plead guilty to corruption charges.

OK O W the suggestion has been made to McCann.

  13. - Fixer - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 12:40 pm:

Never heard of it, but sounds delicious. Might try making some this weekend. Thanks.

    Great.

I’ll keep my eyes and ears open to this.

For a cool million you could name the cannoli

    You’re welcome.

The “Google Key” has all kinds of instructions to make this tasty treat

===For a cool million you could name the cannoli===

    Tempting.

Can you throw in a Yuengling. Just one, not a case or half-barrel…

Sorry OW, I am going to have to put my foot down on the fried cannoli (exclamation point) that is just a bridge too far.

===Sorry… I am going to have to put my foot down on the fried cannoli (exclamation point) that is just a bridge too far.===

    That is disappointing.

My hope is 80% of the time, outside the delicious fried cannoli rift, we can find common ground.

Wondering if Governor Costume will get asked at his state fair press event about the leader of the Republican Party (whose name he won’t say)vile name calling of a former African American West Wing assistant?

  21. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 12:57 pm:

It probably won’t happen until I retire, as this is a really bad time of year to try to get the time off, but someday I’ll go to the state fair.

In the mean time, help me out here. What do tractors pull at a tractor pull?

  22. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 1:16 pm:

Prediction. Blago and Manafort have sentences commuted on the same day.

  23. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 1:17 pm:

    A sled.

  24. - anon324 - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 1:30 pm:

BlueDogDem–why would you rather have it at housing projects than at CTA and/or Metra stations?

  25. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 1:40 pm:

Anon. Doesn’t matter to me, but we need to do something. Don’t we?

Do y’all see the news about the safe manufacturer closing down two plants in Chicagoland and lay off 153 people? It’s because of Trumps tariffs and they are sending those jobs to mexico. Wonder what Gov Junk will say if he is asked about it?

“Hehehe…Well, see, this is about one thing…Mike Madigan and his corrupt…this is about two things, Mike Madigan and his corrupt machine. Stack-On Products wouldn’t be leavin’ Illinois if, uh, if we could just get rid of the brutal corruption from Mike Madigan and JB Pritzker….it’s all about these three things, see, Mike Madigan and JB Pritzker and,uh, the corruption that’s just killin’ our state….”

“Doesn’t matter to me, but we need to do something.”

Cory Doctorow calls this approach the “Security Syllogism”:

    • Something must be done.
    • We’ve done something.
    • Something has been done.

== Anyone been to the Fair? ==

Yes, once on Thursday most the day with grandkids Mrs RNUG went Thursday also, Friday afternoon with a girlfriend, and all day Tuesday with son and grandkids.

== How are the crowds? ==

    Thin.

Friend operates a parking lot by block or so south of the Main Gate. Hardly any customers.

    == Exhibits? ==

The ones in the Exposition Hall are desperate for customers. Literally hauling people into their booths out of the aisles.

    == How’s the food ==

    Overpriced like always.

Will give a plug to a pair of friends: Hamburger Dan / Sunrise Cafe food trailer on the main drag and Nick / Aztca food truck in Conservation World.

  32. - Columbo - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 2:58 pm:

Taken my boys three times so far, they love it. My wife and I enjoy the “people watching”, an outside People of Walmart on steroids. Stopped out for lunch today, the simple Pork Sandwich ($5) at the Pork Patio is pretty darned good. Crowds thin, parking lots empty, but it is mid week with rain in forecast.

  33. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 3:12 pm:

===Mrs RNUG went Thursday also, Friday afternoon with a girlfriend===

You better hope they don’t run into each other or you’ll have some ’splaining to do.

    “Friday afternoon with a girlfriend”

Nice “Euro-marriage” you got there, a wife and a girlfriend. Tres bon.

    LOL banned puncuation

Maybe I should have said she went with an old friend of hers from childhood.

  36. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 4:40 pm:

RNUG, two of my favorite Springfield spots. Sounds like I haven’t missed much. If I can get AA Princess 2 to bring me some mini donuts when she goes, I’m probably good.

  37. - RNUG - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 5:17 pm:

    -47th Ward- , -Grandson of Man - ,

You guys just reminded me of a fun day years ago. Sometime I will have to tell you the story of the time I got a female friend to go lingerie shopping with me for my wife.

Let’s just say we managed to astonish and embarrass a few sales clerks.

  38. - BlueDogDem - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 5:23 pm:

RNUG. This site is PG rated.

  39. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 5:30 pm:

Lol RNUG, that’s living dangerously. Love to hear that story over a cold beverage.

  40. - RNUG - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 5:49 pm:

    -BlueDog-,

No worries. The stories are all G or PG.

Sorry I’m late… been at the fair.
They pull a weighted sled, on which the weight somehow gets heavier the further they are in their run.
Very loud and lots of black smoke pouring from their exhausts. Did I mention lots of noise?

  42. - RNUG - Wednesday, Aug 15, 18 @ 9:09 pm:

== They pull a weighted sled, on which the weight somehow gets heavier the further they are in their run. ==

The sled is sloped, high in the front, low in the rear. Weight starts out at the rear of the sled. As the sled is pulled, the weight also moves up to the front of the sled, making the front of the runners dig into the dirt, which makes the sled harder to pull.
