Question of the day
Wednesday, Nov 14, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller * Inauguration day for governors is the second Monday of January. The General Assembly’s official start date is the second Wednesday of January. January starts on a Tuesday next year, so the second Monday is the 14th. The legislature’s second Wednesday is the 9th. That means Gov. Rauner, and not JB Pritzker, will be presiding over the Senate on the 9th when its members are sworn into office and elect its president…
The oddest Senate swearing-in I ever saw was in 2009, when Gov. Rod Blagojevich presided over the chamber after he’d already been impeached by the House and just a few weeks before the Senate removed him from office. * The Question: Any snarky predictions for the Senate ceremony on January 9?

- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:16 pm:
Rauner: Quiet everybody, quiet, let’s come to order. Are there any nominations for President…
(Sen. HARMON rises. RAUNER ignores HARMON, looking on the Republican side. After a brief pause, Sen. PLUMMER arises. RAUNER sees PLUMMER)
Rauner: Senator Plummer, for what purpose do you rise.
Plummer: Yeah, uh… hey everyone. So, I pick Billy… ugh… Senator Brady cause we go way back and he knows Senate stuff, and I got a better office with the college fridge and the Slurpee machine…
(HARMON interrupts)
Harmon: Governor, this is out of order…
Plummer: (continuing) … and I think he’d win against Cullerton and a Chicago machine vote, and I not leaving until all the votes are counted or they turn off the lights.
Harmon: Governor…
Rauner: Is there a second for Brady?
(Stunned, the floor is silent, PLUMMER, still standing, stares at HARMON, then looks to RAUNER for approval)
Harmon: Governor. If I may. (Clears throat, then begins reading from a paper retrieved from his coat, folded in half long ways) ‘Governor, my Senate colleagues…”
PLUMMER starts humming loud, turning his face towards HARMON, tilting his head side to side, still humming
Harmon: Governor, can I have order?
Plummer: (musically) I’m not stop-ping…
RAUNER watching, looks back, sits in the chair, let’s the two men squabble and turns a smiling, resigning smile towards CULLERTON…
And… scene.
- Jocko - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:16 pm:
Rauner will take a page from Kanye West and interrupt the proceedings, pleading that he should be allowed a “do over” because he used the wrong hand when being sworn into office in 2015.
- SOIL M - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:17 pm:
“Gentlemen are required to wear coat and tie in the Senate.”
Who said he is a gentleman?
- Bruce (no not him) - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:18 pm:
” I’m sorry I will be unable to attend, I have a real estate closing in Italy that day”
- TNR - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:21 pm:
In one last show of contempt for the legislative process, Rauner refuses to attend, which prevents the senate from organizing and sparks a constitutional crisis.
- A-nony-mouse - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:26 pm:
You remember that Jim Acosta video where they try to take the microphone away…
…substitute gavel…

IPI makes arrangements for the 2017 anti-Madigan protestors Marmalard and Niedermeyer to be in the Senate gallery.

- Huh? - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:40 pm:
“JB cuts the “Governor” patch off”
Takes the gavel from 1.4%’s hand, breaks the handle and throws the the remnants into the well of the Senate.
- Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 2:52 pm:
Senate Dems will bring in a large toilet prop with pretend money flushed down it, to symbolize the $95 million of his own money that Rauner wasted on politics.

Or he quits beforehand and it’s up to Slip and Sue
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 3:12 pm:
Slip and Sue taking over for this would be epic.
“… as they gingerly escort her to the well… watching every step… she’s still a state employee so everyone is at heightened alert… we see her attorney in the balcony, there’s a gurney at the ready behind the President’s Door… “

Too soon for toilet jokes.
- illini - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 3:27 pm:
@Willy - there will be many more episodes as you describe. This is just the beginning.
- SOIL M - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 3:29 pm:
Rauner calls the Senate to order.
There is a shout from the back of the room: “The Governor is a (really bad word that will get banned.)”
Cullerton stands and says: ”
We will have order. We shall conduct this proceeding without that type of improper outburst. Who called the Governor a (bad name that will get banned)”
Another shout from the back: “who called that (bad name that will get banned) a governor?”

- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 3:32 pm:
He closes his remarks by saying, “I now pronounce Illinois (deleted).”

- illini -
One never knows.
Hopefully Plummer will learn; listen not speak, one on one lunch with mentors of both parties, talk with Rich Miller, work hard in the district…
… if he doesn’t… welp…
- 47th Ward - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 4:02 pm:
Cullerton: The Senate shall adjourn to the call of the chair. Oh, I am sorry, Governor, I didn’t mean to overstep my bounds. You say that.
Rauner: What?
Cullerton: Say “Meeting is adjourned.”
Rauner: It is?
Cullerton: No, you *say* that, Governor.
Rauner: What?
Cullerton: “Meeting is adjourned.”
Rauner: It is?
Cullerton: [sighs, then gives the governor a paddleball] Here, play around with this for awhile.
Rauner: Thank you, Tom.
Cullerton: No, it’s John.
Rauner: It is?
- Henry Francis - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 4:07 pm:
47th - nice
As long as Cullerton gets a harrumph out of everyone for the Guv it will be fine.
- Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 4:54 pm:
Senate Dems will have Madigan speak on winning elections and keeping power.
- JoanP - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 5:35 pm:
=The Governor gives everyone a clock=
Except Madigan.
- Huh? - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 6:12 pm:
Madigan hands 1.4% a gift wrapped box containing Machiavelli’s book “The Prince” inscribed with the following:
“Bruce
Here is a copy of my favorite political treatise that what I keep on my bedside table. I read it every night before going to sleep.
Did you really think you were going to get your agenda through my House of Representatives? You never stood a chance of success.
Mike”
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Wednesday, Nov 14, 18 @ 8:22 pm:
“When you get to the end zone, act like you’ve been there before.”
I hope Democrats will follow the lead of the governor-elect and be gracious in victory.
It is enough of a humiliation to force Governor Rauner to preside over the swearing-in of a growing Democratic super-majority in the Senate after boasting four years ago that he was going to put Cullerton and Madigan in the minority.
Savor that moment.
- PublicServant - Thursday, Nov 15, 18 @ 7:16 am:
The microphone won’t work when Rauner tries to use it. The gavel will have splinters. Union revenge complete.
- Huh? - Thursday, Nov 15, 18 @ 8:07 am:
YDD - must disagree. Spike the ball and do a happy dance. For all of the vilification of Madigan and the Democrats, 1.4% deserves to have it rubbed in his face. If 1.4% had run a positive campaign, would have a different point of view.
