With Chris Welsh becoming our first BLACK majority leader in Illinois, how does that compare with other states? Has any other state have or had a black american as their majority leader in the their legislature?
- lake county democrat - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 6:34 am:
@truthteller California’s Willie Brown (mentor of Kamala Harris IIRC) comes to mind.
A good article in the Washington Post with Terry Gainer and his perspective on the insurrection at the Capitol. But they describe his time in Illinois government, including ISP director under Edgar as, “some time with (the) Illinois state police.”
I would think Illinois leads nation in Black powerful politicians. Partee, Jones, Obama(for the win) .three Black US Senators, Black Secretary of State that won every county mayor of third largest city state attorney of one of largest court system, county board president and that is just off top of my head
It’s the 15th, where do I send the rent check, I feel bad living in you head rent free.
Last night “Forrest Gump” was on. Between “Running on Empty” and “Against the Wind”, tough not to have those feelings after this week in Illinois governing and politics.
It appears MLB is stalling political contributions. The Ricketts family, owners of the Cubs, will they comply with what MLB is doing, including here in Illinois, be it the GOP or for a planning of a political run as well?
You’d think with members of Congress from Illinois voting against impeachment, a new Speaker in decades, severe fiscal issues with the budget in Illinois and a looming fight on a map, the criminal justice reform legislation… trolling me seems odd to make any points.
The White Sox are going to be so fun to watch next season. They are also built for a long run, the Cubs are definitely rebuilding and to what end, I dunno.
Cubs ownership has been all kinds of awful for a very long time, now it’s a different type.
I just ask that those in the NE part of Illinois realize there are people Downstate who do not want to separate the State and are both horrified and embarrassed by what has occurred. Depending on the county, 15-35%, which adds up to a significant number. We are praying the passage of time will heal. Don’t give up on holding the State of Illinois together, NE Illinois holds the cards.
Nevada had a Black Speaker and Black Senate Leader in 2017. That is a state where majority leader is the top senator because the LG is technically senate president.
It’s been exhausting. Been taking vitamin D supplements, thanks to Rich’s recommendation, to strengthen against Covid. My vitamin D level has gone up a lot since last year and is now nearly in the normal range.
A song from one of Illinois’ own, REO Speedwagon, has a great message for these times: Keep Pushin’.
Plainfield Township supervisor Tony Fremarek was arrested by the US secret Service yesterday.
So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

However, I will not be surprised if the NL Central becomes the baseball equivalent of the NFC East in the upcoming season. The winner probably lucky to win 90 games, with the remaining four at or below 500. Probably an edge to the Cardinals to win the division at this time.

Speaking of the North Siders, did any of you hear yesterday’s announcement that Theo Epstein has been hired by the Commissioner’s office as consultant?
I listened to part of the afternoon drive local sports show on 1450 Springfield last night and at least one of the hosts started speculating that Epstein could be strong candidate for Commissioner once Manafred retires.
Checked on google chrome for other capitol fax entires for “Icky Republican”, “Friends of Sue” “Fifth Horsemen” etc and there are none. And they all posted at roughly the same time. I’m guessing it’s one person with a few sock puppet friends who can’t tolerate another person’s comments, but have nothing to contribute of his/her own.
Stay well OW, enjoy your contributions, and don’t feed the trolls.
Doctors are now saying that Covid causes scarring of the lungs far worse than what they see with long term smokers. This is occurring even in asymptomatic individuals. Beyond a death rate that now routinely reaches 3K a day, we also have to realize that even in those that “recover” the long term effects of this disease will be something they will carry with them likely for the rest of their potentially abbreviated lives.

Some more people here at work got vaccinated this week. No one had any issues. Maybe 3/4 thought it stung more than the flu shot and did so for a couple of days. The others semi-affectionately called them weaklings.
I am amazed, here in Eastern Bloc country, given everything that has happened in the past couple of weeks, from Mrs. Miller to D.C., by the amount of doubling down of right-wing support I see on social media.

The FBI would be involved with the other issue that has been mentioned here before, involving the chief of staff of the 97th dist state rep.
This case is a different one and is regarding embezzlement and bank fraud.
It’s just confusing because they all work for Mark Batinick.
