The line between day and night has clearly become blurred for many of us. Let’s everybody get some rest and regroup and have at it for another day [exclamation point]

And thank you, Rich, for helping us all navigate it. And now maybe more Oscar?

  2. - truthteller - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 5:19 am:

With Chris Welsh becoming our first BLACK majority leader in Illinois, how does that compare with other states? Has any other state have or had a black american as their majority leader in the their legislature?

  3. - lake county democrat - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 6:34 am:

@truthteller California’s Willie Brown (mentor of Kamala Harris IIRC) comes to mind.

  4. - Sangamo Girl - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 7:08 am:

A good article in the Washington Post with Terry Gainer and his perspective on the insurrection at the Capitol. But they describe his time in Illinois government, including ISP director under Edgar as, “some time with (the) Illinois state police.”

  5. - DuPage Saint - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 7:21 am:

I would think Illinois leads nation in Black powerful politicians. Partee, Jones, Obama(for the win) .three Black US Senators, Black Secretary of State that won every county mayor of third largest city state attorney of one of largest court system, county board president and that is just off top of my head

  6. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 7:32 am:

It’s the 15th, where do I send the rent check, I feel bad living in you head rent free.

Last night “Forrest Gump” was on. Between “Running on Empty” and “Against the Wind”, tough not to have those feelings after this week in Illinois governing and politics.

It appears MLB is stalling political contributions. The Ricketts family, owners of the Cubs, will they comply with what MLB is doing, including here in Illinois, be it the GOP or for a planning of a political run as well?

  7. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 7:45 am:

You’d think with members of Congress from Illinois voting against impeachment, a new Speaker in decades, severe fiscal issues with the budget in Illinois and a looming fight on a map, the criminal justice reform legislation… trolling me seems odd to make any points.

  8. - JS Mill - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 7:56 am:

Not even 8:00am and the self owning has started for some.

Is it too early for it to be considered “day” drinking by some of our posters?

    Hang in there OW.

  9. - Essential State Employee - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 7:57 am:

Maybe Rich could convert OW to rooting for the South Siders?

  10. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:02 am:

    - JS Mill -… :)

    Be well.

    - Essential State Employee -

The White Sox are going to be so fun to watch next season. They are also built for a long run, the Cubs are definitely rebuilding and to what end, I dunno.

Cubs ownership has been all kinds of awful for a very long time, now it’s a different type.

  11. - BCOSEC - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:03 am:

I just ask that those in the NE part of Illinois realize there are people Downstate who do not want to separate the State and are both horrified and embarrassed by what has occurred. Depending on the county, 15-35%, which adds up to a significant number. We are praying the passage of time will heal. Don’t give up on holding the State of Illinois together, NE Illinois holds the cards.

  12. - Precinct Captain - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:12 am:

Nevada had a Black Speaker and Black Senate Leader in 2017. That is a state where majority leader is the top senator because the LG is technically senate president.

  13. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:17 am:

It’s been exhausting. Been taking vitamin D supplements, thanks to Rich’s recommendation, to strengthen against Covid. My vitamin D level has gone up a lot since last year and is now nearly in the normal range.

A song from one of Illinois’ own, REO Speedwagon, has a great message for these times: Keep Pushin’.

  14. - TheInvisibleMan - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:23 am:

Plainfield Township supervisor Tony Fremarek was arrested by the US secret Service yesterday.

So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

  15. - The John Rawls Position - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:23 am:

-Is it too early for it to be considered “day” drinking by some of our posters?-

When you have the energy of some posters , you become sort of a side kick. That takes a lot of energy.

  16. - Essential State Employee - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:24 am:

I think the Sox (and Cardinals) will be more fun to watch next year than the Cubs rebuild.

However, I will not be surprised if the NL Central becomes the baseball equivalent of the NFC East in the upcoming season. The winner probably lucky to win 90 games, with the remaining four at or below 500. Probably an edge to the Cardinals to win the division at this time.

  17. - Essential State Employee - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:29 am:

Speaking of the North Siders, did any of you hear yesterday’s announcement that Theo Epstein has been hired by the Commissioner’s office as consultant?

I listened to part of the afternoon drive local sports show on 1450 Springfield last night and at least one of the hosts started speculating that Epstein could be strong candidate for Commissioner once Manafred retires.

=== understanding of Republicans in Illinois.===

Meh. Old, angry, white, rural… some even ignore insurrection.

Baseball, there’s always more to learn about baseball. Theo was once thought to be the gold standard, now he’s moved on too.

  19. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:32 am:

Checked on google chrome for other capitol fax entires for “Icky Republican”, “Friends of Sue” “Fifth Horsemen” etc and there are none. And they all posted at roughly the same time. I’m guessing it’s one person with a few sock puppet friends who can’t tolerate another person’s comments, but have nothing to contribute of his/her own.

Stay well OW, enjoy your contributions, and don’t feed the trolls.

  20. - Pundent - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:36 am:

Doctors are now saying that Covid causes scarring of the lungs far worse than what they see with long term smokers. This is occurring even in asymptomatic individuals. Beyond a death rate that now routinely reaches 3K a day, we also have to realize that even in those that “recover” the long term effects of this disease will be something they will carry with them likely for the rest of their potentially abbreviated lives.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-lungs-scarring-smokers-lungs/

  21. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:39 am:

(Tips cap to - Da Big Bad Wolf -)

Theo as commissioner is a nice fit, I saw him more looking to be part of an ownership group looking for a franchise like Jeter.

The Bears shoulda looked to hire Theo, ala John McDonough and the Cubs/Blackhawks

  22. - pool boy - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:42 am:

I’m dating myself, but I saw Jackson Browne live in 1978. Back then, we held up a lighter to bring him back out.

  23. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:43 am:

    @Truth Teller:

Welch is the first Black house speaker, But Illinois has had two Black senate presidents, Partee and Jones.

I heard Kass is planning a column suggesting that Madigan dropping out of the race for Speaker is a plot to run Lisa for Governor in 2022. You heard it here first my friends.

  24. - ddp76 - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:45 am:

“Plainfield Township supervisor Tony Fremarek was arrested by the US secret Service yesterday.”

This seems odd to me. Wouldn’t it be the FBI who usually does this stuff? Help?

  25. - West Side the Best Side - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:45 am:

Cubbies already won the World Series once this century, what’s the rush? (Unfortunately have also had this thought about the Sox.)

  26. - TheInvisibleMan - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:49 am:

=== Wouldn’t it be the FBI who usually does this stuff?===

The FBI would be involved with the other issue that has been mentioned here before, involving the chief of staff of the 97th dist state rep.

This case is a different one and is regarding embezzlement and bank fraud.

It’s just confusing because they all work for Mark Batinick.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:52 am:

    === projection===

… and yet I don’t identify with those old, angry, white, rural folks who vote Raunerite and Trump and support insurrection.

The cult is strong with the feeble minded.

Their grasp of the likes of Bost, LaHood, Davis is strong, as Casten, Krishnamoorthi, Schneider, Underwood, Foster sit in former GOP strongholds.

Losing seats to own the libs I guess.

  28. - Essential State Employee - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 8:59 am:

==Cubbies already won the World Series once this century, what’s the rush? (Unfortunately have also had this thought about the Sox.)==

Cards have got one up on both teams as far as WS titles this century, but we would like to see another soon.

  29. - Earnest - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:00 am:

    @YDD

Thanks–just realized I hadn’t laughed out loud in quite awhile. I needed it.

Some more people here at work got vaccinated this week. No one had any issues. Maybe 3/4 thought it stung more than the flu shot and did so for a couple of days. The others semi-affectionately called them weaklings.

  30. - up2now - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:11 am:

I am amazed, here in Eastern Bloc country, given everything that has happened in the past couple of weeks, from Mrs. Miller to D.C., by the amount of doubling down of right-wing support I see on social media.

  31. - Cheryl44 - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:14 am:

17 Chicago cops have been suspended for lounging in Bobby Rush’s office during a riot last summer.

  32. - OneMan - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:22 am:

== I am amazed, here in Eastern Bloc country, given everything that has happened in the past couple of weeks, from Mrs. Miller to D.C., by the amount of doubling down of right-wing support I see on social media. ==

Why are you surprised? It seems if you are this far into the movie, you are going to stay for the end.

On an unrelated note, they are doing vaccinations in AZ 24 hours a day, have a family member scheduled to get it at 00:45 AM

  33. - Essential State Employee - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:31 am:

I know it’s the Trib, but Kass just let ‘er rip on Bears management and coaches in his column this morning. Wow.

    https://www.chicagotribune.com/columns/john-kass/ct-chicago-bears-kass-20210115-dsygnilxxnhjfbnfkidsaczmoi-story.html

  34. - Ok - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:35 am:

“Kass” - of all people, he doesn’t take the buyout….

  35. - DoinStuff - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:42 am:

    From NPR story yesterday …

“Currently, Regions 3 and 5 appear poised to not only exit Tier III mitigations on Friday, but also Tier II mitigations, landing them at Tier I.”

Anyone have a link to the Tier 1 mitigations breakdown?

  36. - Steve Rogers - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:55 am:

@dupage saint: Don’t forget Roland Burris, who was first elected to a statewide office in 1978. And Charles Freeman, who was elected to Illinois Supreme Court in 1990. Going back even further, George Leighton was on the appellate court in 1969.

  37. - Westender - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 9:55 am:

    -BCOSEC-
A new organization was recently created by former DCEO, State employees, Edgar Fellows — “Elevate Illinois.” Their mission is to help promote positivity in the State of Illinois and to assist understanding that Downstate and Chi/Collar have to live together. You may want to check them out at www.elevateillinois.org or on FB and Twitter. I live in Whiteside County so my world is not too different than the Eastern Bloc world….

  38. - West Side the Best Side - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 10:15 am:

Essential - Does seem a little greedy for the Cards to want to win that much, certainty doesn’t seem to be the the DNA of many of the Chicago teams. But, hey, in the words of the “South Side Irish” song, “When it comes to baseball we have two favorite clubs/ The Go Go White Sox and whoever plays the Cubs.”

  39. - NastyNader - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 10:28 am:

We could have a black speaker years ago. MM wouldnt allow such things

  40. - The Silver Man - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 10:59 am:

  41. - DuPage Saint - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 11:02 am:

And I forgot the obvious. Black a G and Lt Governor

  42. - Unessential Unemployed - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 11:05 am:

    How bout those Bears?

  43. - Essential State Employee - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 12:32 pm:

    ==How bout those Bears?==

Going further and further down the toilet.

  44. - RNUG - Friday, Jan 15, 21 @ 12:56 pm:

Yep. Days and nights have been running together lately.

For most of the year, I was dealing with getting a house ready for sale, so that kept me on a daily schedule. But now that it is sold (in hours), my days and nights have blurred. Often stay up late with the MRs watching murder mystery type shows, reading the newspaper when it hits the door between 3 & 4 am, then going to bed and sleeping until I wake up. Other days we set the alarm and go for a drive to just get out of the house.

Be glad when we get back to a semblance of normal.
