* The governor announced this week that the state is still on track to fully reopen on June 11. I think I will discontinue this daily posting on that date, while still keeping an eye on things, of course. Your thoughts?…

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) today reported 478 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois, including 9 additional deaths. In addition, more than 67% of Illinois adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose and nearly 51% of Illinois adults are fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

    Cook County: 1 female 50s, 1 female 60s, 1 male 60s, 1 female 70s, 1 female 90s
    Kane County: 1 male 80s
    McLean County: 1 male 40s
Rock Island County: 1 female 70s
    Will County: 1 female 80s

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 1,383,065 cases, including 22,842 deaths, in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years. Within the past 24 hours, laboratories have reported 35,697 specimens for a total of 24,676,057. As of last night, 1,013 individuals in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of those, 278 patients were in the ICU and 150 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.

The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from May 26-June 1, 2021 is 1.5%. The preliminary seven-day statewide test positivity from May 26-June 1, 2021 is 1.8%.

A total of 11,338,305 vaccines have been administered in Illinois as of last midnight. The seven-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is 41,234 doses. Yesterday, 29,322 doses were reported administered in Illinois.

*All data are provisional and will change. In order to rapidly report COVID-19 information to the public, data are being reported in-time. Information is constantly being entered into an electronic system and the number of cases and deaths can change as additional information is gathered. Information for previously reported deaths has changed, therefore, today’s numbers have been adjusted. For health questions about COVID-19, call the hotline at 1-800-889-3931 or email dph.sick@illinois.gov.

I welcome you discontinuing the daily posting of this information. Not because it has not been incredibly useful for the last year+, but because it is yet another sign we are getting closer normalcy, (whatever normalcy looks like now.)

  2. - Victor - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 12:11 pm:

Does this mean that the City is going to follow the State on this? Last time, the Mayor seemed reluctant when the Governor went to Phase 4+.

  3. - Pot calling kettle - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 12:12 pm:

I like seeing this regular update; perhaps cut back to once a week (maybe the Wednesday or Thursday report). The virus is still circulating.

===Does this mean that the City is going to follow the State===

Your guess is as good as anyone’s.

I know I’ll miss it, but i understand the decision

    Makes sense to me, Rich.

    Thank you for your service.

Don’t discontinue these posts. It is literally my daily tracker of hope.

  8. - Jimmy - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 12:24 pm:

It has been nice having easy access on this site I regularly visit. But all one has to do is go to idph website and look in the recent news section on the front page for this info. Maybe provide a link and instructions on June 11 with your last regular update so others can find the info in the future if they would like?

  9. - Stu - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 12:40 pm:

Just visit http://www.dph.illinois.gov/ at noon each day, that is when they post the press release

  10. - Hamlets Ghost - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 12:44 pm:

A steady decline in vaccination rates is a potential story. If we stall out and the total percentage vaccinated is too low, COVID will be with us forever.

Maybe once a week post the seven day moving average for vaccinations.

  11. - Fav human - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 12:58 pm:

I agree with getting back to normal, But also would appreciate either a link or perhaps a once a week post.

  12. - Skeptic - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:17 pm:

Can you turn it into a graph in the sidebar?

  13. - Daily #s - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:20 pm:

Would like to keep seeing daily as I noticed more younger ages starting to show up in deaths.
Your site is a daily no brainer check for many.

  14. - Anotherretiree - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:22 pm:

Seems reasonable. It will be back this Fall to resume hunting the unvaccinated. Do you have a case number in mind to resume ? 750-1,000 ?

  15. - Mongo - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:22 pm:

I agree with Pot. This is valuable information, especially as more and more people seem OK with not wearing a mask. Maybe 1 or 2 times a week? Or the link to IDPH is a good idea too. This feature is the first thing I read (meaning I don’t skip to politics first).

  16. - Frank talks - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:26 pm:

I understand removing it but it’s been incredibly useful during the last 14 months. It’s also nice to see those numbers so low now. Thank you

  17. - Oxfordian - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:41 pm:

I agree that this daily post has been incredibly useful, and I find myself coming here for this information instead of going to IDPH. I like suggestions to keep this information on the blog in some way - either through a data box on the side or a weekly update. It is your blog though, so do what you think is best.

  18. - Ares - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:44 pm:

The info on this blog is much easier to follow than IDPH’s. Perhaps once a week?

  19. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:48 pm:

First, thank you Rich for having these, daily.

It’s your call, obviously, Rich, to these posts continuing, and what’s especially great is it’s a discussion about facts and matrix, not philosophy or “opinion” to the happenings around numbers.

A credit to this blog you created that the appreciation to these posts is about passing on facts.

  20. - Peanut Gallery - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 1:55 pm:

Thank you for these posts over the past year. Would like to see an update maybe once a week?

  21. - RWC - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 2:06 pm:

Today confirms the weekend numbers weren’t anomalies. We’re really seeing the end. Except maybe in a few places where they don’t like vaxes. I think your 6/11 is a reasonable target, though I’d love to have another week when I can come, see really low numbers, and beam happiness.

  22. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 2:07 pm:

You could track this forever if you wanted. It isn’t ever going away completely. I think given the current status of things getting rid of the daily posts is ok. We’re in a good place right now.

  23. - Al - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 2:11 pm:

I am watching the # of patients being Ventilated. Posting it here saves me going to the Public Health site. I imagine others have focus on another measure.

  24. - Joe Bidenopolous - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 2:21 pm:

Rich - thanks, and do whatever you think is right.

For me, if I had a vote, I’d keep it. We’ve watched the mostly bad news on this post for almost 15 months. The last few weeks it’s trended really well and provided good news. And that’s refreshing and I’d like to see it continue.

Also, I’m with Al - I’m watching the vents.

  25. - Enviro - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 2:51 pm:

Please continue these posts. It is a welcome reality check of what is really happening with Covid-19 in Illinois.
    Thank you for doing this.

  26. - Justin - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 2:51 pm:

John Sahly (@JSahly)’s Twitter account is also a good source for daily COVID updates in Illinois. As for this blog, hopefully we’ll get once or twice-weekly updates on the progress.

  27. - Victor - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 4:45 pm:

And of course; I also want to add my appreciation for the daily posts.

BTW, I also use the site https://covidactnow.org/us/il/county/cook_county

regularly to see the graphical trends map.

  28. - olddog - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 4:53 pm:

Your daily updates have been a lifeline to me throughout the pandemic, and for the better part of the past year the IDPH numbers and Gov. Pritzker’s daily pressers were the most reliable source of information, sometimes the only reliable source, I had access to — anywhere — and I still track the case and test positivity rates every day as a rough measure of community spread. It’s been a real service, and I’m deeply grateful.

That said, it may be time that we don’t need them on a daily basis anymore. As others have said, we have alternative sources of information.

  29. - Publish - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 5:15 pm:

I say keep posting until the ICU is down to zero for 14 days. That’s a sign we all should see plus it’s summer and political news will be quiet

  30. - Pundent - Wednesday, Jun 2, 21 @ 9:38 pm:

The Washington Post has a very good article today showing the current infection and death rates among unvaccinated people. The reality is that we aren’t doing well (+50% the U.S. adjusted average). There’s a belief among the unvaccinated that things are better and they have nothing to worry about. That’s simply not the case. For the unvaccinated things are about as bad as they were at the peak. I guess the question is do we continue to show more concern for their health then they do?
