* From Mary Ann Ahern’s interview with SoS candidate Alexi Giannoulias

MAA: Some have used the Secretary of State’s office as a launching pad for other offices, to go on to run for governor. Is that your hope as well?

AG: I haven’t even thought about that.

Believe him?

  2. - Southern Skeptic - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 11:53 am:

About as much as I believe him on anything which is to say not in the slightest.

  3. - walker - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 11:55 am:

    Whatever you say, lexi

  4. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 11:56 am:

    “Sure, Jan”

It’s like Rod, there were chances to stop Rod… can Alexi be stopped.

  5. - Amalia - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 11:57 am:

    No. huckster.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:02 pm:

Alexi, outside this quote and in context to “him”…

He always seemed to be “looking ahead” to an absolute fault, not merely doing or being present in the moment.

When Alexi vanished for years, actually rejected, Alexi, ever the opportunist, decides to run for SoS, touting “election security” and pretending a current program is his new bold vision.

Is Alexi looking ahead? Of course Alexi is, he can’t change who he is.

  7. - EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:06 pm:

More like a “launching pad” to make even more money.

  8. - Selene - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:08 pm:

Happy to support him for SOS. I really do not care what may or may not happen in the future.

  9. - 47th Ward - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:08 pm:

I believe him as much about this as when he insists that his endorsement of Tom Cross wasn’t an endorsement.

  10. - Joe Bidenopolous - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:10 pm:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. No. He was just the errand boy at Broadway right?

  11. - RIJ - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:16 pm:

He’s a fool if he hasn’t thought about it.

  12. - Anyone Remember - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:25 pm:

    No.

  13. - B Team - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:26 pm:

I think he’s aiming for Senator Durbin’s seat when that opens up.

  14. - East Bank Observer - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:26 pm:

    - Joe Bidenopolous -

Barack Obama(of Martha’s Vineyard fame) says Alexi knows how to handle money.

    What B Team said.

  16. - thunderspirit - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:34 pm:

Not only do I not believe him, I think he’s thought about it, dreamed of it, planned for it, and will be ready to pounce when the opportunity presents itself.

None of this is to say I think it’s a good idea.

  17. - Jibba - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:42 pm:

If I were to believe him, I would also now think he’s not very bright.

  18. - Captain Obvious - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:42 pm:

How can you tell if Alexi is lying?

  19. - West Sider - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:42 pm:

    No

  20. - Amalia - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:42 pm:

@B Team, oh hell to the no.

  21. - Jocko - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:43 pm:

You’re trying to tell me you’ve been pining away at BNY Mellon and Annoula Ventures solely for the chance to run the SoS office? Puh-leeze.

  22. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:44 pm:

Nope. But you could almost certainly say the same for the rest of the candidates. SoS can be pretty cushy unless you’re crooked.

  23. - Eire 17 - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:46 pm:

Love it. Ran for U S Senate but now laser focused on SOS. Makes sense. Not

  24. - Elijah Snow - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:47 pm:

I can’t even read that exchange with a straight face. No.

  25. - Frank talks - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:48 pm:

He’s not going to run for Governor he wants US Senate. That sets him up better for following in his basketball buddy’s footsteps. Gosh Mary Ann how’d you miss that?

  26. - JoanP - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:49 pm:

    No.

There are very few politicians, alive or dead, who haven’t thought about higher office.

  27. - JS Mill - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:55 pm:

    No.

  28. - Primate - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:56 pm:

Let’s see who the Rauner Locusts put forward for SOS and then decide who is telling the truth. They are drooling at another run at Alexi and another crop (Candidate) to destroy. Not to forget they need the jobs.

  29. - ;) - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 12:59 pm:

Nope. But then again, you can’t believe him on anything, so why would this be any different?

  30. - Pizza Man - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:00 pm:

Amazing…another lie from Mr. Alexi. Be honest. If we can lie about a simple endorsement to Tom Cross… Can We TRUST ALEXI IN OFFICE? (I can see the commericals/ads).

Sen. Dillard: Please consider running for SOS instead.

  31. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:03 pm:

=== Let’s see who the Rauner Locusts put forward for SOS and then decide who is telling the truth. They are drooling at another run at Alexi and another crop (Candidate) to destroy. Not to forget they need the jobs.===

    What does this mean exactly?

While true, Alexi and Frerichs are ripe to be beaten, can’t beat someone with no one.

Maybe Alexi can get surprised in the primary, but right now that looks unlikely to the monetary and support aspects, but petitions aren’t even out…

  32. - HonestAbeLives - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:11 pm:

More importantly, Gov. Pritzker doesn’t believe him. Probably related that the Governor is publicly snubbing Giannoulias’ former chief of staff, Robin Kelly.

  33. - HonestAbeLives - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:12 pm:

==Maybe Alexi can get surprised in the primary, but right now that looks unlikely to the monetary and support aspects, but petitions aren’t even out…

Still a long way to go in this race and the inevitability campaign Giannoulias is running tends to backfire on candidates. People tend to reject coronations.

  34. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:13 pm:

=== Probably related that the Governor is publicly snubbing Giannoulias’ former chief of staff, Robin Kelly.===

    I doubt this, lol

Alexi taking on Pritzker, not enough “bank” money to make seem smart.

Governor is seemingly more upset with Durbin.

“Kelly is a pawn, I didn’t know until the vote went down it was Durbin all along”

  35. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:15 pm:

=== tends to backfire on candidates.===

    … when there’s viable alternatives.

Right now, the Dem announced candidates are seemingly running for Junior Class President, not a statewide elected office.

  36. - B Team - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:17 pm:

If you ask me being a US Senator in Illinois is much easier and doesn’t carry the headache of being Governor. It’s a six year term and I believe he’s wanted this since his narrow loss to Mark Kirk in 2010.

  37. - HonestAbeLives - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:19 pm:

==Governor is seemingly more upset with Durbin.

Kelly/Giannoulias is a proxy for the Governor so that he does not take shots at Durbin directly.

  38. - HonestAbeLives - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:20 pm:

    ==… when there’s viable alternatives.

A wise man recently mentioned that petitions aren’t even out yet.

  39. - Pizza Man - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:20 pm:

“the Dem announced candidates are seemingly running for Junior Class President, not a statewide elected office.”

    lol - Embarrassingly true.

  40. - HonestAbeLives - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:21 pm:

==If you ask me being a US Senator in Illinois is much easier and doesn’t carry the headache of being Governor. It’s a six year term and I believe he’s wanted this since his narrow loss to Mark Kirk in 2010.

I’m sure Giannoulias hasn’t given thought to succeeding Durbin or an open seat if Duckworth joins the Biden Administration.

  41. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:24 pm:

    ===wise man===

    Oh.

I’m not wise, I’m barely coherent.

Then again, I hedge my statement with

=== Right now, the Dem announced candidates ===

    So there’s that.

    ===Kelly/Giannoulias is a proxy===

That’s a long walk around the barn.

It’s Durbin. The rest is Tattaglia silly to Barzini reality.

    Pritzker needs none of them.

  42. - HonestAbeLives - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:30 pm:

    ==Pritzker needs none of them.

Pritzker also has no use for Giannoulias as SoS. It will look like another Durbin/Kelly win and he doesn’t need the headache of having Giannoulias looking for his next gig while in office.

  43. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:35 pm:

    ===It will look like another Durbin/Kelly win===

No it won’t. What would that even be base on?

The Honorary state chair (for all practical purposes, even SEC folks agree) can’t really help in a state race as the fear of breaking SEC rules would be embarrassing

===and he doesn’t need the headache of having Giannoulias looking for his next gig while in office.===

You see Pritzker going 3 terms as governor?

You actually think Alexi scares a man willing to spend a quarter of a billion dollars to take down any foe?

This is wishful thinking that Alexi would like someone to take him seriously as any threat, lol

  44. - Ducky LaMoore - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:41 pm:

    https://capitolfax.com/2021/04/19/rate-giannoulias-first-online-ad/

Does this look like an ad for a man running for Secretary of State? “I am running for Secretary of State to restore trust in our ability to change things for the better.” 1. Sounds like an ad for a Governor or Senator. 2. Did Jesse White somehow destroy trust in our ability to change things for the better?

To summarize, NO NO NO. If Alexi Giannoulias told me he was a human being, I would demand proof.

  45. - Almost Retired - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:43 pm:

    No

  46. - Hmmmmmmm - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:49 pm:

I am going to vote for Alexi

  47. - Hmmmmmmm - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 1:49 pm:

And none of you can stop me

  48. - Ducky LaMoore - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 3:02 pm:

“I am going to vote for Alexi And none of you can stop me”

Cool. A few million will vote in the primary. I only control one vote. But man did I make a lot of people eat crow who voted for Blago in ‘06. Good luck. Best wishes.

  49. - Anon - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 3:37 pm:

In the last fifteen years, I’ve voted for one R and that was Kirk over Alexi. If Alexi is the nominee, I’ll do it again. He is just facially untrustworthy.

  50. - Loop Lady - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 3:51 pm:

“You want me to look to the future”?

  51. - Candy Dogood - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 3:53 pm:

Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he hasn’t thought about that since the last time he embarrassed himself by losing a state wide election.

  52. - NorthsideNoMore - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 4:08 pm:

Well he does not lack in hubris ….so we will see ?!

  53. - Hmmmmmmmmm - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 4:27 pm:

do not care about Blago or you making your friends eat crow

  54. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 4:30 pm:

=== do not care about Blago or you making your friends eat crow===

    Alexi, that you?

    lol

  55. - Excitable Boy - Monday, Aug 16, 21 @ 6:56 pm:

Yes, he wants to be Senator.

  56. - Alexi-Hating - Tuesday, Aug 17, 21 @ 3:47 pm:

    Why so much?
Are some of you relics holding on to that hard to the past? He’s running an early smart campaign all the while stock-piling cash.

When he wins, will you dinosaurs lament yesteryear’s SOS and how good and honorable of a man he was..?

  57. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Aug 17, 21 @ 3:49 pm:

=== When he wins, will you dinosaurs lament yesteryear’s SOS and how good and honorable of a man he was..?===

    “When he wins”… that’s so Alexi-like

No. I know I won’t see Alexi any different if he wins, honorable as a title, sure…lol
