* Every 2-4 months I wake up with an eye stye. Usually, I just power through it and don’t even mention my situation. But I woke up a few hours ago and decided this would not be one of those power-through days and treated it and went back to bed.

You’re gonna be on your own for probably a couple of more hours while I do what I generally do to make this thing go away enough so I can work at least half comfortably.

Keep the conversation Illinois-centric, please. No international stuff, no national stuff, not even indirectly. Also, keep it civil. If even the Illinois House could manage to do so this week, I have faith that y’all can as well.

Thanks.

Hope you rest well and feel better, Rich.

Was shoveling this morning. Lots of snow, but light and fluffy.

Another DeMarvelous win for the Bulls last night, fun to watch.

Just three weekends till we return to the time would should stay on year round.

    …and here we go.

That BGA report on JB this morning. Yikes.

Frustrating Illini game last night. They can look so good and so bad in the same game.

  5. - Leslie K - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:08 am:

    Feel better, Rich.

Only had a couple inches of snow in NW Chicago overnight, so we made out pretty well. Hope those of you who were hit harder dig out safely.

“That BGA report on JB this morning. Yikes.”

It’s an irrevocable trust that he has no control over. Not exactly “yikes” worthy.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:13 am:

My best to you, Rich. Im sure it’s frustrating.

I use to get stye’s all the time. started using this and the relief was almost immediate.

What Steve said at 9:04. They need too string some wins together in Big Ten tourney. Chemistry on the court is a thing and there is no flow to the offense for stretches in games.

  10. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:20 am:

Are we talking about this BGA?

  11. - JoanP - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:20 am:

That sounds nasty, Rich. Hope you can make it go away reasonably soon.

Not too much snow here, but driving home last night visibility along the lakefront was not great. Salt trucks were lined up ready to go - Chicago’s mayors will never forget what happened to Mike Bilandic.

The Sun-Times had a very scary article about “snow ramp” vaulting - let’s all be careful: https://chicago.suntimes.com/2022/2/25/22948562/plowed-snow-ramp-vaulting-accidents-flying-off-expressways-idot-kevin-ramos-griselda-zavala-wisdot

  13. - Pundent - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:23 am:

Good to see Illinois battle back the way they did last night especially with Cockburn on the bench. But they aren’t going to make much noise in the tournament if they can’t sustain the effort for a full 40 minutes.

  14. - noodling - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:23 am:

the former guy placed his business in a “blind trust,” didn’t he? billionaires don’t become billionaires by playing by the same rules as the regulars. i think that the governor should be pressed on this report, and somebody should look into the business practices of Centene to determine if there are any fraudulent activities that should cause concern. lots of taxpayer dollars at stake here. the watchdogs need to take a closer look at this.

  15. - Southern - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:28 am:

    Get better, Rich.

Having said that, I think it’s time for lawmakers to quit using the phrase “having said that.” That being said, they also need to quit saying “that being said.”

Seems a politician can’t string together two sentences nowadays without using one of those phrases.

  16. - Huh? - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:31 am:

JoanP - I saw the same article and wondered how the Sun Times proposes to eliminate the piled snow along a bridge parapet. Given the available equipment, the potential damage to snow plows and the parapet, the piles of snow are unavoidable.

Winter driving requires extra attention and caution.

  17. - H-W - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:32 am:

I was watching the news on my new Amazon Fire Stick yesterday. We dropped extended cable a couple years ago, and basic cable a couple months ago. Too much waste. So yesterday, I finally saw the Irvin Campaign, “Tough on Crime” TV ad. The ad reminded me instantly of that sheriff from Wisconsin who I believe tried to run for office up there, and openly opposed “Black Lives Matter.” That guy ended up on FOX Media Entertainment shows. I wonder if Irvin will follow in his path, should he lose.

  18. - Arsenal - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:40 am:

==the former guy placed his business in a “blind trust,” didn’t he?==

Who, Rauner? I don’t remember if he did or did not, but that wasn’t really the source of any of his problems. The “taking business meetings on the back porch of the mansion” thing was gross, but there wasn’t really any impropriety with him, he was just bad at his job.

  19. - ChicagoBars - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:51 am:

I rise in support of Southern’s motion. Having said that, it’s a lovely day to wrap up those last petition sheets. Sunny!

  20. - Osborne Smith III - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:52 am:

The Illini game last night was a joke. We were playing five-on-eight all night. Trent Frazier was mugged on the next-to-last possession; what a time for the officials to swallow their whistles.

  21. - Perrid - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 9:55 am:

Even the BGA said it was a blind trust and multiple people they interviewed said JB had no input or even knowledge of the investment. If you want it to really be blind, end the requirement to report it publicly. See how that works out

  22. - Big Dipper - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:01 am:

The BGA is basically the Illinois Policy Institute or Center Square now. Bought and paid for. Physician heal thyself.

  23. - Steve Rogers - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:04 am:

Osborne Smith III, while I agree the officiating was a little suspect, the Illini have to be better at making free throws and Kofi missed A LOT of shots last night. If he makes just two of those 10 missed shots, Illinois wins.

My best remedy is for stye is heating rice in sock. Put in on your eye for five minutes and you instantly feel better.

  26. - MisterJayEm - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:15 am:

    “Yikes.”

JB and his blind trust have a relationship very similar to my relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Neither of us has any control over what they do, but they do what they do with our money and allegedly for our best interests.

    – MrJM

  27. - Back to the Future - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:19 am:

Good research and reporting by the Better Government Association.
In terms of JBP not knowing about the investment, the BGA reported on and attached the annual economic disclose statement that the Gov. filed on May 3, 2021. Centene was listed and the article by the BGA said Centene received 2.6 Billion (with a B) from the state “in the first half of 2021 alone”.
In terms of JBP not knowing anything about Centene, that seems like a pretty big number for the Governor to overlook, but if he says he did not know anything then I guess we have to believe him.
I suspect that the BGA had to be concerned that the JBP attorney thought their work was “potentially libelous”. Glad they were not intimidated and went ahead with publishing their views in this important report.
    Good job BGA.

A friend of mine claims that the best answer for an eye stye is smoking a bowl.

But now that I think about it, he claims that smoking a bowl is the best answer for everything.

I guess Kyle McCarter is running for US Senate in Oklahoma. Good for him

==Neither of us has any control over what they do, but they do what they do with our money and allegedly for our best interests.==

The difference in this case is that the trust actually has benefited Pritzker, at least in the short term.

But, y’know, “let’s invest in construction and development companies when the state passes a giant new capital bill” doesn’t really require the disclosure of insider information.

  31. - SAP - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:24 am:

Southern at 9:20. Amen to that. Let’s quit ending sentences with “right?” while we’re at it, right?

===In terms of JBP not knowing anything about Centene, that seems like a pretty big number for the Governor to overlook===

    (Sigh)

  33. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:37 am:

  35. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:40 am:

JB’s lawyer is Marc Elias, according to the report. The dude is a legend, an almost singular force fighting for democracy and winning many state-level redistricting cases, and of course winning against the big lie.

  36. - Arsenal - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:43 am:

    ==The dude is a legend==

Maybe I’m being pedantic, but I feel the need to point out that while Elias is a good lawyer who has notched up some important wins for good causes…he’s a *great* self promoter, lol.

  37. - Back to the Future - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:43 am:

    OW
    “..are you a donor..”
At times I wish I was not a supporter, but yes I support the BGA.
    By the way, good comeback.

  38. - Suburbanon - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:46 am:

Sad that BGA has become a paid mouthpiece. No more blind trust in their moral high ground.

  39. - West Sider - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 10:57 am:

“The BGA is basically the Illinois Policy Institute or Center Square now.” More like the “News” side of FOX News- neither “fair” nor “balanced” and often not honest- they “rake the muck” their funders tell them to.

  40. - Candy Dogood - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 11:07 am:

If congress outlaws the owning of or trading of individual stocks for members of congress they will likely create a class of investments or a description of a class of investments or investment vehicle that could become the standard for “blind trusts.” This is technically a self own, but Pritzker had already addressed this possibility with the pledge of donating to charity and it’s pretty silly for anyone to suggest that Pritzker specifically ran for governor to enrich himself.

  41. - Commisar Gritty - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 11:09 am:

Rich always puts (No relation) whenever mentioning Rep. Chris Miller, but not once have I seen him put Dennis Miller (No relation). I presume this means we can all assume they are brothers.

  49. - This is ridiculous... - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 11:43 am:

I’d like to ban the use of “as well” which the weather folk have adopted as their pause word. Yuck.

  50. - Big Dipper - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 11:52 am:

And beginning the answer to a question with “so.”

  51. - Club J - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 12:00 pm:

Hope your eye heal well Rich. I’ve had a couple ulcers on mine and it was scary.

I had to laugh at the DeVore latest Facebook live when a question was asked. When you win as Attorney General and if Pritzker wins what will happen? DeVore responded with. I’m telling Pritzker I’m no longer his private Attorney against the people. I’m the people’s Attorney. Then I’m going to start an investigation at the top into every politician to look for corruption. His followers went crazy. Does he think that job is a one man wrecking crew?

  52. - ANNON'IN - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 12:02 pm:

Hope u r better. Any thoughts of seeing q real doc or just more chicken bones over your head?

  53. - So.. - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 12:04 pm:

So, as long as we’re talking grammar, how about banishing the use of “So” as a filler word that members use while thinking of their reply to a question during debate. It appears that “So” has the new “um”. So, is “so” better than “um”?

  54. - thisjustinagain - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 12:42 pm:

(Laughs nefariously preparing to unleash doom in the open thread….)
….oh, wait, Rich said he trusts us to behave. Curses, foiled again (banned punctuation).
So here’s a Laurel, and Hardy handshake to all of you. Wishing Rich a ‘No Sty in the Eye Anymore’ Friday too.

  55. - TJ - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 1:30 pm:

Chicagoland and Central Illinois can agree on one thing…. Ayo Dosunmu is great.

Had assumed that Milhiser was aligned with the Irvin group , But just saw a “Meet Your Conservative Republican Candidates” Ad that
    lists :
    Peggy Hubbard US Sen
    Mary Miller US Rep
    John Milhiser Sec of State
    Tom Devore AG
Mike McHaney 5th Dist App Ct
Wayne Rosenthal 108th Dist State Rep

    So maybe that’s a team - If so Where’s Bailey ?

  57. - Rich Miller - Friday, Feb 25, 22 @ 2:33 pm:

    No. Just no.
