Legislation passed by the Illinois House would levy an escalating series of fines against anyone caught removing a cat’s claws for anything other than medical or therapeutic reasons. Under the measure, declawing would not be allowed simply to “make the cat more convenient to keep or handle.” […]

Republican state Rep. Charles Meier of Highland, who voted against the bill, questioned how much cats actually suffer when they are declawed. […]

Meier also brought a partisan angle into the argument, alleging that the bill’s 10 Democratic sponsors and other supporters “are willing to abort a baby right before birth but they won’t let you declaw a cat.”

Democrats need to keep reminding voters…

“Republicans want to control women’s bodies. Republicans do not think women should be able to choose what Republicans want for them”

This here quote, it trivializes choices, and makes a woman’s right to choose a trivial matter.

Do not let up on these Republicans. If these Republicans could restrict women, they would.

“are willing to abort a baby right before birth but they won’t let you declaw a cat.”

So you want the choice to decide what to do with a cat’s body but you don’t want a woman to decide what to do with hers.

  3. - Just Me 2 - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:03 pm:

It’s hard to take the Republicans seriously when they’re so over the top ridiculous. Nobody is enjoying terminating any pregnancy, but Republicans act like it is something women do just for fun. And pulling in late term abortions, when the woman is most likely going through a traumatic pregnancy that is leading to life wrenching decisions, is furthering that trauma. Save it for when it matters. If you don’t like the bill just vote no.

  4. - Chicago Republican - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:10 pm:

Abortion is not healthcare, because pregnancy is not a disease. It has nothing to do with controlling women, it is about saving a human life. I totally understand where Meier is coming from. The logical fallacy behind caring more about a Cat having claws than a baby having life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is bizarre.

    –Rep. Charles Meier of Highland–

George Carlin had a nice quote about people who are against abortion.

After looking this guy up, I see George is still a very wise man, even posthumously.

===It has nothing to do with controlling women, it is about saving a human life.===

Requiring a woman to carry a pregnancy to term isn’t controlling?

What, arresting those seeking abortions in, say, an Utah situation, is not forcing a woman?

    Good try.

=== because pregnancy is not a disease. ===

So ridiculous. And ED is not a disease yet it is considered men’s healthcare. So why do men need the little blue pills?

  8. - TheInvisibleMan - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:24 pm:

–it is about saving a human life–

No matter how many women we have to let die.

Your internally inconsistent religious beliefs might make sense to you, and it’s fine if that’s how you want to live *your* life.

If your beliefs are so great, then why do they need constant force from the state in order to apply them? Shouldn’t people be able to realize the ultimate truths you claim to represent on their own - if they are actually truths?

We all agree the sun rises in the east. We don’t need religion or force for everyone to agree on that. Why is that? You should ask yourself these types of questions, before thinking about applying your own beliefs to others.

===a baby having life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is bizarre.===

It’s a bit bizarre that one half of the human race would not have autonomy over their body, requiring pregnancy to go to term.

=It has nothing to do with controlling women, it is about saving a human life.=

No. It’s about forcing a woman to have a baby regardless of her or the child’s health, well-being, or circumstances. And it’s a view that the majority disagree with.

  11. - Jerry - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:43 pm:

Considering no one aborts a baby right before birth sounds like histrionics to me.

  12. - H-W - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:45 pm:

    Some people jus’ dumb.

  13. - Demoralized - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:47 pm:

==It has nothing to do with controlling women==

It has everything to do with controlling women. It is part of the Republican Party platform to stick their noses into other people’s medical care. It’s none of your business so stay out of it.

==Democrats need to keep reminding voters…

“Republicans want to control women’s bodies. Republicans do not think women should be able to choose what Republicans want for them”==

Republicans need to keep reminding voters…

“Democrats want to kill 40 week old babies”

  15. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:55 pm:

===“Democrats want to kill 40 week old babies”===

Did they try that in Kansas?

So you readily admit Republicans are requiring women to see pregnancies to term?

Man, I hope the GOP runs on that in 2024, as they hid on abortion in 2022

  16. - Arsenal - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 1:57 pm:

==It has nothing to do with controlling women, it is about saving a human life.==

If that were true, Republicans would be pro gun control and pro universal health care.

==Republicans need to keep reminding voters…

“Democrats want to kill 40 week old babies”==

I love it when you guys just flat out admit that you have to lie to the voters to win.

  17. - Pundent - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 2:00 pm:

=Republicans need to keep reminding voters…

“Democrats want to kill 40 week old babies”=

Go right ahead. Voters are smart enough to know the difference as well as the circumstances and timing of most abortions. Terminating pregnancies at 40 weeks or “right before birth” is exceedingly rare and typically only done when the mother’s life is at risk. But if that’s the argument you or Meier want to make, who am I to stop you?

  18. - someonehastosayit - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 2:02 pm:

Mr. Middleground is nowhere near the middle. The Freedom Caucus is all about limiting freedom. Why the need to continually misconstrue the truth about your views?

  19. - low level - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 2:05 pm:

==Democrats want to kill 40 week old babies==

You’ve never heard of an ectopic pregnancy or any of the other health reasons an abortion would be neccessary late term? I dont think many women who go carry a baby to 40 weeks will go though all that just to turn around and decide to abort. Usually there is a life threatening health issue which leads to the decision.

  20. - Jerry - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 2:08 pm:

Banning Erectile dysfunction pills would drasticallly reduce the number of abortions.

  21. - Nick Name - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 2:10 pm:

===are willing to abort a baby right before birth===

Right before birth, the only thing on everyone’s mind in the delivery room is delivering a health baby. No one suddenly decides, “Wait, let’s abort it!”

Second, there is no such thing as elective late term abortion. Insurance won’t even cover elective late term abortion. The only reason anyone gets a late term abortion is because of fetal anomalies so severe, the baby will not survive outside the womb. And the mother will likely die too. Not the pro-lifers care about the life of the mother. So long as a woman is forced to deliver a baby that is going to die anyway, the mother’s life means nothing to them.

===Abortion is not healthcare, because pregnancy is not a disease.===

The maternal mortality rate is higher in states with abortion bans, and will likely keep rising. Keep up.

  22. - Demoralized - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 2:11 pm:

==“Democrats want to kill 40 week old babies”==

No, they don’t. That lie isn’t even a lie to be taken seriously it’s so dumb.

  23. - MisterJayEm - Tuesday, May 2, 23 @ 2:12 pm:

“Democrats want to kill 40 week old babies”

    No.

A “40-week old baby” would be 9-months old.

That’s simple high school biology plus elementary school math.

    Educate yourself.
