    RE: Ohio

    Once again abortion rights were on the ballot and once again abortion rights have won. In every state abortion rights have appeared on the ballot it has one. Maybe the Republicans should take a hint and realize that they have lost this battle. Might want to think twice about doubling or tripling down on a topic that they are losing miserably on. If I were the Democrats I would continue pounding the Republicans on their abortion stances. It’s a winning message.

    Mayor Johnson lost another procedural vote yesterday when he tried to rule the censure resolution of Ramirez- Rosa out of order. Yet another example of what happens when you dont have an effective IGA team.

  3. - H-W - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:02 am:

    @ Demoralized

    One might argue that Republicans have not lost that battle until the last Republican candidate who forced unwanted pregnancies upon women is removed from office.

    Abortion is not a campaign item. It is a form of oppression. Oppression should have long term consequences. The fact that too many states now have been empowered to oppress women doesn’t change if politicians choose a new argument.

  4. - Torco Sign - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:09 am:

    Ohio voters supported enshrining rights while reserving the ability to add restrictions (once there’s fetal vitality). I don’t think that’s the message in Illinois or nationally among Democrats so I’d hold off on telling everyone that the Illinois position is supported across America, even in red states. That’s simply not true.

    === Mayor Johnson lost another procedural vote yesterday when he tried to rule the censure resolution of Ramirez- Rosa out of order. Yet another example of what happens when you dont have an effective IGA team.===

    No.

    This is on a non-existent floor leader and parliamentarian.

    The non-existent floor leader was getting the “rebuking”, that’s not on any IGA unless they too were intimidated Ald. Mitts

    If taxpayer funded abortion, without parental consent through all 9 months of pregnancy is a winning message I am proud to be on the losing side.

    It looks like the Gallup poll that said on 55% oppose abortion in the second trimester and 70% in the third trimester were wrong in Virginia

  7. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:20 am:

    ===I don’t think that’s the message in Illinois===

    Um, fetal viability restrictions are in Illinois law.

  8. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:28 am:

    lol

    Nobody is using that message.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:30 am:

    I’m still on the fence if abortion is a game changer… even in Illinois.

  10. - Torco Sign - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:31 am:

    “===I don’t think that’s the message in Illinois===

    Um, fetal viability restrictions are in Illinois law.”

    Rich, I know you’re smart enough to know that’s not what Democrats and interest groups go around saying. When’s the last time they mentioned fetal viability at a campaign event in Illinois? Glad the measure won in Ohio but people are being intellectually dishonest about what there’s a mandate for.

  11. - Skokie Man - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:34 am:

    “If taxpayer funded abortion, without parental consent through all 9 months of pregnancy is a winning message I am proud to be on the losing side.”

    And if THAT is the argument advanced by the GOP nationwide, then the GOP will continue to get creamed on this issue. The only place the GOP has won is in the 6-member radical majority on our current Supreme Court. Elections have consequences, and that is the lasting legacy of Trump’s 2016 victory.

  12. - Donnie Elgin - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:35 am:

    “The existing statute does contemplate the state police dealing with this problem and allows them to amend rules on an ongoing basis. They have that authority in the statute,” he said. “So I think that problem was anticipated. And that’s how the law intends to deal with that problem.”

    The self-reporting endorsement affidavit is so flawed and this right here is the crux of the problem – unelected administrative staff get to arbitrarily and regularly (ongoing) change rules that directly affect a right enshrined in the constitution.

    The silver lining is that the ban and endorsement affidavit process so clearly flies in the face of Bruen this will eventually force the SCOTUS to deal with this directly and clearly for all 50 states.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:35 am:

    ===Nobody is using that message.===

    The message is Republicans are dangerous to women’s health.

    Republicans have no response but to double down.

    We’ve now seen this, 3 election cycles.

  14. - H-W - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:37 am:

    @ LP === taxpayer funded abortion ===

    So for you, it is about taxes, and about allowing minors to have abortions? These are restrictions you want to impose?

    What about abortions for non-children? Any problems there? Any problems with people paying for abortion services?

  15. - Pundent - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:39 am:

    =If taxpayer funded abortion, without parental consent through all 9 months of pregnancy is a winning message I am proud to be on the losing side.=

    Women, and a lot of men, see this as a phony argument. It has become the new talking point of the right but the vast majority of abortions come nowhere close to meeting this criteria.

  16. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:39 am:

    @LP

    Doesn’t surprise me that your proud to be on the losing side. That’s pretty much where you are all the time. You keep doubling and tripling down on your losing message. Winner make policy. You evidently aren’t interested in winning. Your comments on pretty much everything indicate that.

  17. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:41 am:

    ==were wrong in Virginia==

    Democrats still won.

  18. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:43 am:

    ==so clearly flies in the face of Bruen ==

    The court disagrees with you so far. It’s the law. Follow it. And if you don’t then I guess you aren’t one of those “law abiding citizens” the gun rights people are constantly yelling about.

  19. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:43 am:

    ===I know you’re smart enough to know===

    And you should be smart enough to know what the actual messaging is. And it ain’t totally unrestricted for 9 months.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:46 am:

    What makes - LP - adorable to actual “policy to politics” discussions is the need to have phony, unused arguments that allow - LP - to think they are winning the day…

    … like thinking there’s a “win” in Virginia, but it’s electoral losses being seen.

    How can so many people be wrong while - LP - in the thinking has all the answers no one is wanting?

    No one? Yeah, the voters are speaking. Not my opinion.

  21. - Lucky Pierre - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:47 am:

    What was on the ballot in Virginia was no abortion after 15 weeks except in cases of rape or incest

    75% of the all world nations including 27 EU countries do not permit abortion after 12 weeks. Only 3 of 42 European countries permit them after 15 weeks

    Is the vast majority of the civilized world also dangerous to women’s health by restricting abortion to 12-15 weeks instead of 26 weeks in Illinois?

  22. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:49 am:

    It’s consistent with his habit of dishonest commentary @OW.

    How about you vote your conscience and I will vote mine

    Voter don’t do nuance and this is a nuanced issue.

  24. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:53 am:

    @LP

    Republicans are in large part arguing that abortion should be illegal. The 6 week ban doesn’t provide real abortion rights. Many people don’t even know they are pregnant yet at that time. Abortion is a winning issue for Democrats. And you are completely ignorant to that fact. And your continued dishonesty really gets tiresome. Can you be honest just once for crying out loud?

  25. - Demoralized - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:55 am:

    ==Democrats do their best to hide their extremism on this issue==

    The Democrats want to maintain abortion as being legal. That isn’t extreme. The voters agree with them. Your side lost. Get over it.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:56 am:

    === How about you vote your conscience and I will vote mine

    Voter don’t do nuance and this is a nuanced issue.===

    The nuance is Republicans are dangerous to women’s health.

    Republicans parse “well, Dems want abortion at 9 months”

    That’s a nuance, my friend. It’s also a pandering to a minority on the issue.

    === Democrats do their best to hide their extremism===

    Meh. Three elections, Republicans are still dangerous to women’s health.

    That’s not changing anytime soon …because “doubling down”

  27. - Pundent - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:58 am:

    =Democrats do their best to hide their extremism on this issue when it is out of step with the rest of the civilized world=

    Democrats believe this is an issue best left to a woman and her doctor. Period, full stop. Only Republicans see that as extreme. And the voters appear to agree.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 11:00 am:

    === 75% of the all world nations===

    You’re losing American elections, friend.

    Your arguments still highlight that Republicans have no answer to voters voting that … Republicans are dangerous to women’s health.

    ===Democrats do their best to hide their extremism on this issue===

    Narrator: Republican appointed SCOTUS lied to the senate on Roe being settled law.

    This is why you’re losing.

  29. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 11:10 am:

    === What was on the ballot in Virginia was no abortion after 15 weeks ===

    No, it was not. There was no abortion measure on the ballot.

    What was on the ballot in Virginia was the election of the entire Legislature. The people of the Commonwealth voted so as to give the Democratic Party advantages in both houses of the legislature.

  30. - H-W - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 11:10 am:

  31. - H-W - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 11:16 am:

    === Voter don’t do nuance and this is a nuanced issue. ===

    Another word for nuance in this case is pedantry. According to Martineau (1837), pedantry “is the result of an intellect which cannot be wholly passive, but must demonstrate some force, and does so through the medium of narrow morals.”

    Until women control their bodies completely, women are oppressed by the powerful and their pedantic allies. This is what is on the ballot.

  34. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 11:48 am:

    Abortion rights keep winning elections, even in red states. Republicans can stay in denial about voters rejecting their control of women’s bodies and healthcare decisions. It’s not their bodies or choices, stay out. What’s hard to understand about that? Many also know well that Republicans weep for the unborn but scorn and reject the born who are poor or sick and need government assistance.

  43. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 1:32 pm:

    ===isn’t a troll kind of comment===

    Why they so bitter, so much winning.

    The reality that is lost, as I see, is this;

    A woman’s health care is now dictated by a zip code as to wether or not a woman has full rights to their medical health.

    In short, not all women are equal in the law or to each other… thanks to Republicans… and it’s now dangerous for women and their health.

    Republicans wanted a post-Roe America. How’s that going?

    Elections matter because winners make policy, and if it’s bad policy voters make changes. Blaming voters for not “understanding nuance” when simplicity says one side is endangering women’s health, well, nights like last night are going to continue until Roe type legislation is done on a national governing.

    It may take a few cycles, but Republicans won with Dobbs.

    To close, and make it Illinois centric, what happened in Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, how can one look at Cook and the collars, Champaign, Peoria, anything above 72 and say Republican wants to curb a woman’s right to their body is a winner in Illinois outside a minority of areas?

    We’re talking Ohio and Kentucky… plus Kanas… how do Republicans in Illinois saddled with Trump gonna find greener districts?

  44. - low level - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 1:50 pm:

    The point is that a competent mayor and IGA team would have come up w some form of discipline for CRR acceptable to all that would have avoided Wagespauk offering a censure resolution.

    As part of that, the mayor also would have avoided being overruled (Shall the Chair be Sustained vote he lost when he tried to rule censure was out of order).

  45. - Suburban Mom - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 1:50 pm:

    ===75% of the all world nations including 27 EU countries do not permit abortion after 12 weeks. Only 3 of 42 European countries permit them after 15 weeks===

    LP, I debunked this “stat” for you the last time you brought it up. They allow free abortion on demand up to 12 weeks. AFTER 12 weeks most EU countries require a justification, but allowable justifications include “can’t afford to raise a child” and “don’t want to have a baby, actually” and “father skipped out when he found out I was pregnant.”

    The thing about the GOP treating abortion as a discussion among men is that they are constantly talking nonsense, and those of us with uteruses are intimately aware that they are talking nonsense, and frequently lack even the most basic information about female bodies and pregnancy.

    I look forward to the day when abortion is a discussion for women and their doctors, and people like Lucky Pierre who are neither will be cordially invited to MYOB.

  46. - Suburban Mom - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 1:54 pm:

    Actually, LP, can you answer a question for me? When a woman is 12 weeks pregnant, how old is the fetus?

  47. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 2:32 pm:

    @Suburban Mom for the win and my nomination for best comment of the year.

  48. - Ghost of H.L. Hart - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 3:23 pm:

    -Republicans wanted a post-Roe America. How’s that going?-

    If you read Dobbs , you know that the decision was based on not banning abortion but bringing it back to the states like it was pre-Roe. There are now more abortions post Dobbs than pre-Dobbs. Can’t you at least be a little honest?

  49. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 3:26 pm:

    === If you read Dobbs , you know that the decision was based on not banning abortion but bringing it back to the states like it was pre-Roe. There are now more abortions post Dobbs than pre-Dobbs. Can’t you at least be a little honest?===

    Women are not equal in medical standing in their own medical choices and rights… and you’re cool with that.

    Women are different in different states to their rights.

    Your comment is *EXACTLY* why Republicans are dangerous to women’s health.

    You don’t care women should have the same rights no matter where they live.

    Congratulations

  50. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 3:37 pm:

    The most telling thing about women understanding their rights was when voting was enshrined in the constitution.

    By enshrining women’s suffrage, women made sure there was no Dobbs to take voting away from women, because women’s rights to their bodies seems ok to be decided by the states…

  51. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 3:42 pm:

    ===Can’t you at least be a little honest?===

    Every SCOTUS Justice currently seated said Roe was settled law.

    How did that work out?

    “… a little honest”, love of Pete.

  52. - Du Page Legal Scholar - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 4:11 pm:

    -Every SCOTUS Justice currently seated said Roe was settled law-
    Roe was never settled law. Inventing new 14th Amendment rights can be downright dangerous. Even RBG recognized that Roe was horrible legal scholarship. It might shock many but the post- 1937 Court now and then does overrule precedent . It happens.

  53. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 4:16 pm:

    === Roe was never settled law.===

    Then all nine lied saying it was during confirmation

    You choose. Either way, there was no truth in overturning Roe.

    Republicans now will face voters on this until it’s resolved. Telling a woman in Alabama she’s different than a woman in Illinois to the rights of her body, maybe even facing legal recourse… that’s not how things should work.

    The 14th amendment is a joke… considering which amendment was needed for women to have the right to vote.

    A legal scholar would wonder aloud why women needed to enshrine the right to vote.

    Then Dobbs came along.

  54. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 4:20 pm:

    =Roe was never settled law.=

    Several of our newer justices would disagree with you based on their sworn public statements during their approval hearings.

    =The self-reporting endorsement affidavit is so flawed and this right here is the crux of the problem – unelected administrative staff get to arbitrarily and regularly (ongoing) change rules that directly affect a right enshrined in the constitution.=

    Such a tired trope. Who do you think does all of the work in these agencies and in government. Here is a hint: NOT elected officials. The work is done by professionals in the agencies. That is true at local, county, state, and federal levels. And always has been. They are the ones left to interpret the legislation and enforce the rules which are often poorly written, not just for this law.

    Are you saying justice Kavanaugh is a liar?

  55. - No More Excuses - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 4:29 pm:

    ===He has a small team, but no director.===

    They keep delaying her start date. They must expedite past whatever the holdup is. There are two new potential communications staffers facing internal push back and calls to not hire from the current press secretary.

  56. - RNUG - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 8:29 pm:

    == … aren’t one of those “law abiding citizens” ==

    Until January 1, 2024 current owners of the banned firearms and attachments that are not registered are in compliance with the law. If they they don’t register by Jan 1, barring additional rules changes by ISP, they will then no longer be “law abiding”.

  57. - RNUG - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 8:35 pm:

    People are saying voters don’t do nuisance,but they are.

    If you map the extremes of abortion, one end is none period and the other end is no restrictions. Fact is, every State is somewhere between those two extremes.

    Same for fun control. One extreme is is unlimited ownership and the other end is zero ownership (or confiscation as some would say). Again, every State, and the Federal government, has some kinds of limits.

    So yes, voters and legislators do do nuisance. But that gets lost in the outspoken rhetoric from the extremes.

  58. - Pundent - Wednesday, Nov 8, 23 @ 10:08 pm:

    =If you map the extremes of abortion, one end is none period and the other end is no restrictions.=

    Respectfully, “no restrictions” is a red herring extreme argument that doesn’t match the reality that most abortions occur well before the 3rd trimester and those that don’t usually involve significant health risks to the woman, baby, or both. Leaving medical decisions to a woman and her doctor is not an extreme position.
