Jackson ad: “Don’t let my son die in vain”

Friday, Mar 9, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. has finally gone after his Democratic primary opponent Debbie Halvorson on the gun issue.

The ad features Pam Bosley, whose son died before church before choir rehearsal. Bosley slams Halvorson for voting with the Republicans and the NRA “against the very laws that might have kept my son alive.” Bosley claims that Jackson fought Halvorson “every step of the way.”

“Please, don’t let my son die in vain,” Bosley says at the end. Watch

Halvorson’s old state Senate and congressional districts included a lot of Downstate turf, so she was a big NRA supporter. Jackson’s district is not exactly NRA territory. I’ve been wondering for weeks why he hasn’t gone after her on this issue. It seemed perfect.

* For those of you who can’t watch videos at work, here’s the full script…

Discuss.

* In other TV ad news, Democrat Matt Goetten has a new spot

Where has the issue on JJJr.’s ethics/buying the senate seat gone? I have not heard much about it. In fact I kind of wondered how Nancy Pelosi could endorse him when he was still under investigation. Was that a signal that the whole thing was going to go away? Is a fix in the works?

    ===Is a fix in the works? ===

Yes, I’m sure the Republican-controlled House is plotting to let J3 off the hook.

Halvorson just isnt ready for congress as her two years there showed. The peter principle is in play here she should of stayed in the state senate where she was good at carrying the water for Blago and Emil Jones.

    Wow..really powerful stuff.

    He’s earned my vote.

  5. - Shore - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 11:00 am:

pretty intense stuff from jackson. Wttw has been airing half hour debates with congressioinal candidates. This week they did duckworth and the il10 race-here’s the link I don’t think you posted for downstaters

The illicit business which thrive in that district will just dry up and blow away if there was just one more gun law….

    What a tired argument.

Trips is pounding lumps on Halvorson with Obama. What happened to her Obama book, anyway?

  8. - ChicagoDem - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 11:29 am:

No gun law in the books would’ve prevented Ms. Bosley’s son to “die in vain?” It’s the kids in the area where she lives that killed her son; the kids being raised by her neighbors-other neighorhoods in the city are doing ok with the laws already in the books.

  9. - Steve Bartin - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 11:32 am:

We are Illinois Democrats. We are for only the police owning handguns! Yippie!

  10. - Pot calling kettle - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 11:52 am:

Obviously, this ad would not work downstate, and one more handgun law won’t stop the violence. However, in a district where gun violence has impacted most of the voters in one way or another, this should be a very effective ad. It’s unfortunate that folks from downstate and Chicagoland cannot or will not understand the others’ perspective.

If you live in much of JJJ’s district and hear a gunshot outside, you can assume a person has been shot. If you live in much of Debbie’s old district and hear a gunshot outside, you can assume a raccoon, opossum, or skunk has met its end. Very different perspectives.

  11. - Todd - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 12:11 pm:

Maybe JJJ should tell the State Police to release his FOID info and the FTIP records of all the times he has been called in to by a gun. . .

  12. - beserkr29 - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 12:19 pm:

Just because it’s a different perspective doesn’t mean it’s right. Or legal. Or that it’ll matter one iota. The Indiana border is 16 miles east from the heart of Chicago. Wisconsin is 50 miles north. Why should Illinoisans 200 miles south of Chicago have to be treated as criminals because Chicago has violent crime? I highly doubt people in Alton regularly ship weapons to Chicago. This will win votes, but is highly inflammatory and more than a little manipulative.

===Why should Illinoisans 200 miles south of Chicago have to be treated as criminals because Chicago has violent crime?===

Are you treated as a criminal when you register your car?

  14. - titan - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 12:39 pm:

Was Bosely’s son shot with a lawfully purchased gun, and used by someone permitted to have one?

Another law would not do anything to make bad neighborhoods safe from the already illegal guns used there by people not lawfully able to possess them.

  15. - John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 12:41 pm:

You don’t have to register a car unless you want to take it out in public.

  16. - Newsclown - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 12:43 pm:

What specifically was the bill Halvorsen os accused of not supporting? This spot smells like one of those weasel-word things where they negative claim is based on a certain re-interpretation of the facts.

And three-jay may not be sleeping well until after Rod’s last press conference. Halvorson needs to keep that senate seat business in the foreground.

  17. - Wensicia - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 12:52 pm:

Very effective ad that works in his district.

  18. - Chucky Jay - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 1:49 pm:

It’s surprising to me that this ad is as powerful as it is. If you actually attend some community forums in the district, or walk around and talk to the residents of the communities in this district (including the Chicago communities) there are a TON of folks that want conceal and carry in IL.

  19. - Solarcatcher - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 3:14 pm:

The finger wag shots by Halvorson, especially at Jesse Jr., was a nice touch. That should play real well to his constituents.

  20. - TCB - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 3:25 pm:

@ Rich =Are you treated as a criminal when you register your car? =

I’ve heard people use this sorry comparison dozens of times & it just doesn’t work. Driving & owning a vehicle, horse or otherwise is a priviledge…..not a right.

Besides, registering a vehicle does make its driver less likely to speed, drive drunk or have an accident……how is it that a gun registry is going to decrease the crime rate???

===I’ve heard people use this sorry comparison dozens of times & it just doesn’t work. Driving & owning a vehicle, horse or otherwise is a priviledge…..not a right.===

You missed my point. We don’t make drivers register because we think they’re criminals, do we? No.

Plus, as a firearm owner, you, yourself, personally are already registered with the state police. How is registering your handgun somehow making you a criminal?

  22. - lincolnlover - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 3:51 pm:

I don’t really care if I have to register my handgun. What is not setting well with me is that the mayor of Chicago appears to believe that my registration will alleviate his city’s problem with violence. I do not see the connection and therefore do not see the need to register the gun.

  23. - TCB - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 3:52 pm:

My apologies….I thought you were trying to defend the registry by citing the vehicle registry.

I see what you were getting at now.

  24. - John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt - Friday, Mar 9, 12 @ 4:08 pm:

    >>>>How is registering your handgun somehow making you a criminal?

What are you charged with if you fail to register your car?

And if you didn’t even use the car?

What are you charged with if you fail to register as a gun owner?

What are you charged with if you fail to register your handgun under the proposed legislation?

Even if you don’t use it?

What are you charged with if you fail to register as a voter?

Even if you don’t use it?
