Bill Daley speculation revived… Again
Thursday, Aug 9, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller
* The guy floated his name in 2001 and 2009. I really doubt he’s gonna pull the trigger this time around, but whatever. It’s August…
Is former U.S. Commerce Secretary Bill Daley eyeing a future bid for governor?
It’s the latest rumble in the state’s political jumble — now that Dem insiders tell Sneed Gov. Pat Quinn’s poll numbers Downstate are heading lower than the equator on a cold day — specifically where close legislative races are being fought.
So Sneed called Bill Daley, whose political credentials also include a tenure as President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, for a definitive answer.
◆ Quoth Daley … after a rather dramatic Irish sputter:
“What? The race is two and one half years away! This is no time for anyone to be thinking about entering that race now! This is the time to get President Obama re-elected!
“It’s a joke to be talking about that [gubernatorial] race when the focus should be on the presidential race and the problems we face in the country.”
“Right now I’m focusing on that and my family.”
◆ Translation: If Daley starts doing polling after the presidential election is over, the answer is a probable “yes.”

The early time period of this gubernatorial primary is going to be really annoying.
Half the electeds in the state are going to float themselves for governor, and the vast majority will never have any intention of actually running.
- The Captain - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 10:43 am:
There isn’t any news here.
- Cassiopeia - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 10:43 am:
Quinn is so delusional that he probably thinks he is due another mandate.
- langhorne - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 10:50 am:
bill daley has a great resume, but i doubt he could connect with regular voters, especially the farther you go from the city.
sneed would do better coming to the state fair and writing about rabbits or goats. they are more likely to be governor.

When do we bring up Chris Kennedy as a possible candidate?
I would recommend a mental screening to anyone who wants to be the Governor of Illinois
- just sayin' - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 10:51 am:
Oh good lord, even old retreads Kirk Dillard or Bill Brady could beat him.
Just another “story” Sneed likes to recycle to fill space.
I’m this/close to not taking Sneed seriously.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 10:58 am:
*sigh*
This is a tired old tactic to freeze the field until someone (cough David Axelrod cough) can find a paying client to get in the race. As long as some gullible Dems believe Daley “might” run, they won’t write checks to Quinn or anyone else.
Bill Daley is not going to run for governor. Methinks Sneed is dumber than a box of rocks for enabling this pathetic stuff every four years.
Get it? Forget it.

That Daley name will play real good downstate. Right.
- Wensicia - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 11:07 am:
This is from Sneed?
Yawn.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 11:20 am:
I will only take this seriously if Bill Daley has lunch with Jay Doherty, who is ageless and priceless, someplace.

“When do we bring up Chris Kennedy as a possible candidate?”
Pluto, that’s next week’s exclusive on Sneed’s calendar of perennials.
I think 47s got it right.
- Anon - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 11:31 am:
Sneed does herself and her reputation no help by consistently printing this nonsense.
- downstate hack - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 11:34 am:
If Quinn is vulnerable and/or chooses not to run Lisa Madigan will run, and no Democrat will challenge her in a primary nor beat her if they do .
- Rudykzooti - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 11:44 am:
Oh, I really hope not…I mean who in their right mind would even want that gig. It comes with a possible jail term these days…
- Shore - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 11:49 am:
“bill daley has a great resume,”-his main achievement in life was being born to one of the most powerful democrats of the 20th century. This isn’t some rags from riches story, and good luck selling the banking work and disastrous run as white house chief of staff. The best thing about the Daley’s judging from the stories the Sun Times has done on the next generation is that most of them are too incompetent to have any sort of future in politics despite their family’s last name and connections.
- too obvious - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 12:08 pm:
Why doesn’t Lisa Madigan just announce now and save Rs and Ds a lot of wasted time, effort and money. Think of all the money that could be freed up for productive pursuits.
The sooner the delusions of people like Dillard, Murphy, Brady, Adam A., Proft, etc. etc. are shattered the better. Strike that. Adam A. no doubt thinks he can win anyway. Hey go for it.

Bill Daley — check.
Chris Kennedy — check.
Lisa Madigan — check.
I think those are the perennially mentioned but never run for higher office. Missing anyone?
- Loyal Whig - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 12:43 pm:
Repubs can talk about Jim Edgar running again. Bill Daley against Jim Edgar. Actually, a better choice than we will have in 2014.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 1:14 pm:
How about Ed V., Sneed? Is he running, too?
- Yellow Dog Democrat - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 1:21 pm:
@Wensicia -
You only had to read the headline to know it was from Sneed.
A sure way to boost Quinn’s poll numbers in downstate Illinois is to put someone with the last name “Daley” against him on the ballot.
- Boone's is Back - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 1:53 pm:
After the pension deals and other shennanigans it would be one of the worst times to run with that name
- IrishPirate - Thursday, Aug 9, 12 @ 2:08 pm:
All that lives must die,
Passing through nature to eternity.”
- William Shakespeare, Hamlet, 1.2
Somehow Hamlet seems appropriate when discussing the elective aspirations of Bill Daley.
One day, perhaps after he’s 70+ years old, Sneed will stop touting Daley for office as he inevitably gets closer to the “to not to be” aspects of his earthly adventure.
He had his chance to run in 2002, but his heart never seems quite in it. He might like to be appointed Governor, but it doesn’t work that way.
If he had looked like Halle Berry perhaps Blago might have appointed him to the Senate seat.
I leave you with the image that provokes.

While you are thinking about statewide office and Democrats, think about Mike Frerichs. He is young but has similar qualities to the young Barack Obama, and has raised a big war chest for which he has essentially no use this fall, having made a tough swing district essentially safe, not for Democrats in general but for himself personally.

BIRTHDAYS: Sneed rumors about Bill Daley (ageless).
