Those are some serious boo-birds

Friday, Jun 28, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Chicagoans love to boo politicians at public events. As I noted in comments earlier, I took my brother to Blues Fest many years ago and he was surprised to hear Harold Washington roundly booed. I had to explain the tradition.

But the reception for Gov. Pat Quinn at the Blackhawks victory rally today appeared to go beyond the normal tradition. If the embed doesn’t work (it doesn’t for some people), then click here to watch

They did cheer a little at the end, though.

…Adding… From commenter Darienite…

A couple of minutes prior, they ran a video montage, and Emanuel began his speech without being introduced. Pat Foley introduced PQ, hence the booing. Points for Rahm.

Thanks, Darienite, I wondered how MRE escaped the usual wrath. lol

  4. - Truth teller - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 1:45 pm:

As Rich noted in an earlier post, who wouldn’t have been booed besides Jesse White? When you’re the Gov, you wear the jacket for our dysfunctional state government. Quite frankly, I’m surprised it wasn’t any worse than it was.

  5. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 1:59 pm:

Rahm was smart enough not to be introduced or he would have been boo’d too.

  6. - cover - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:01 pm:

Gov. Quinn should have made light of the booing. He could have said something like, “Did Commissioner Bettman join us here?” Bettman gets booed everywhere he goes, even when presenting trophies like on Monday night.

  7. - Ipone lens cap - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:03 pm:

Quinn should have said they were screaming for Coach Q…

  8. - Small Town Liberal - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:03 pm:

He looked like he was enjoying himself despite the booing. Good sport.

  9. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:03 pm:

I looked at Quinn’s facial expressions after his speech, when he was standing behind the team. He looked happy. Being a politician, he knows well that not everybody will like him, and many will detest him. He looked comfortable with that.

Happy Chicago Blackhawks Day, Illinois. The championship is for all Illinoisans, because we only have one NHL hockey team.

  10. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:03 pm:

Perhaps it was also an AFSCME rally…

  11. - reformer - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:05 pm:

This is in Chicago where Quinn got the most votes. On the other hand, I suspect Blackhawks fans skew more Republican than the average Chicago-area resident.

  12. - local - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:07 pm:

if rahm would have been introduced he would have been booed worse. scanning twitter, people hated rahm on tv and at the rally. link: https://twitter.com/search/realtime?q=rahm&src=typd

  13. - local - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:09 pm:

scan back a few hours when it was happening in real time and it gets a lot worse

  14. - TCB - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:11 pm:

Anyone else remember that time Rocky Wertz sued the State, claiming the capital plan was not constitutional? How soon we forget.

  15. - Jimbo - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:18 pm:

    They were saying Booouurns lol

  16. - A guy... - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:23 pm:

I am more a GOPer, but those in the crowd who booed exhibited a lack of class. He did goad the crowd into a polite ovation toward the end of his very brief remarks.

  18. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 2:26 pm:

Also part of it is, you didn’t wait for hours to get in to listen to Pat Quinn…

I thought the same thing until the camera panned the crowd. None of usual green present that I could see.

It’s nice to know the Guv. is proud of some thing.
He has very little else to be proud of.
Where were Mike and Lisa? They run the State.
    Rahm one upped the Guv.

  22. - Skeeter - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 3:06 pm:

    Great to see him booed.

He was there to try to associate himself with some of the glory of the team.

But to my knowledge he wasn’t even at any of the games.

Frankly, the only elected officials that should have been there were Brendan Reilly who holds season tickets and actually attends nearly every game, and maybe John Fritchey who is a serious Hawks fan.

The rest? Out to support a winner. They should be booed.

  23. - OneMan - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 3:09 pm:

I can think of one loser Pat Quinn supports….

Pretty sure he was at all the home games, and I’m positive he was there for at least 1.

Amazed at all the $200 Hawks jerseys people wear. Don’t they realize they are the 99% giving money to the 1% to advertise a private business? The Roman Emperors knew that if you give the masses ‘bread and circuses’ they will not think about rebelling. Pro sports is an opiate that people take far too seriously!

Bet you are fun at parties…

  27. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 28, 13 @ 3:51 pm:

Earlier in the day, Emanuel was on the radio saying that “Bobby Hull was looking down and smiling.”

    Oops.

Bobby Hull was in Grant Park, with a polar bear skin on his dome. Stan Mikita was in Grant Park. So was Tony E. So was Eddie O.

By the way, the great Gordie Howe is alive and well in Grosse Pointe, too.

What a glorious day downtown! For all you Chicago haters out there, check out the video from the streets and park: blue skies, boats bobbing in the lake, and hundreds of thousands of happy working people taking a break to celebrate their boys and their town. Can’t beat it.

I’ll tell you one thing: when I was coming up, Hawks fans were old guys named “Stasch” and “Seamus” and “Vic.”

These new Hawks fans are the smart kids who have been filling downtown and growing the residential, the restaurants and the bars. They’re everywhere and they’re a force.

Here’s to the kids. Have fun, be safe.

“Ain’t no sin being glad you’re alive.”

wordslinger @ 3:51: Amen, and an OT win for the Springsteen reference!
