Dems will revisit Dorothy Brown slating

Tuesday, Oct 20, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Mary Ann Ahern

The Executive Committee of the Cook County Democratic Party will meet Wednesday to consider reversing its decision to slate Clerk of the Circuit Courts Dorothy Brown.

If the Executive Committee decides to no longer support Brown, it will need a full vote from all of the 80 members of the Central Committee, according to Manuel Galvan, a spokesperson for the Cook County Democratic Party.

Brown, who has held office for 15 years, is now facing a federal investigation, although she says the multiple published reports about it are just rumors. Cook County Democratic Party Chairman Joe Berrios told reporters Friday that Brown was questioned before the slating about whether she faced an investigation, and she told them no.

That last sentence right there is enough to revoke the slating. We’ll see.

Brown is awful, should have been kicked off the slate years ago.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:19 pm:

If I were her, the least of my worries is if I continue to be a slated candidate. I’d be more worried I am a continued Federal Target.

    But… that’s me.

  3. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:26 pm:

Don’t forget, she’s the only Countywide elected official who refused to sign the Shakman consent decree, meaning all of her jobs are patronage jobs. She has a lot of friends on the Central Committee.

  4. - Gooner - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:28 pm:

When has criminal conduct ever been a bar to the support of Cook County Democrats?

But in all seriousness, there has been smoke around Brown for years.

Now suddenly it makes a difference?

  5. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:28 pm:

Is anyone attempting to primary her?

  6. - NIU Grad - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:33 pm:

“But in all seriousness, there has been smoke around Brown for years.

Now suddenly it makes a difference?”

The media is taking it and running with it, which makes the difference, so maybe someone is pushing it?

  7. - @MisterJayEm - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:41 pm:

Never lie to the Feds or to the Cook County Democratic Party.

    – MrJM

  8. - Blago's Luxurious Grey Mane - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:55 pm:

It won’t matter. Only the Feds will be able to get rid of her. Revisit the slating all you want, but Dem primary voters will turn her into a martyr and re-elect her.

  9. - Wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:56 pm:

    – …whether she faced an investigation…–

I refuse to face the fact that I am under investigation.

  10. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 3:58 pm:

She shouldn’t be slated, but boy is the African-American presence on the Dem ballot diminishing. Unless Preckwinkle’s challenger to the Madigan-backed Anita Alverez is successful, is there going to be a single African-American anywhere near the top of the Cook County ballot in the fall?

  11. - alabamashake - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 4:04 pm:

**Is anyone attempting to primary her?**

    Jacob Meister.

But Cook Dems have to have a Plan B, right?

  12. - NOTFUNNY - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 4:16 pm:

==But Cook Dems have to have a Plan B, right?==

There is no plan b. The CCDP won’t support Meister. DB wont step aside therefore it’d be unwise for the party to inject another Black candidate into the race and split the Black vote

Their only real option is to stick with Brown.

  13. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 4:27 pm:

Brownie, you’ve done a heckuva job. Buh bye.

  14. - Formerly Known As... - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 5:03 pm:

==it will need a full vote from all of the 80 members==

    We’ll see is right.

  15. - Just Me - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 5:09 pm:

There are far too many patronage jobs in that office. Hundreds and hundreds of clerks that barely require a high school education. The committee will stick with Brown and hope she gets through the primary and then appoint a “friend” to take over from there. (They’ll use the lame excuse that she is innocent until proven guilty.)

Related: I’m am concerned about the number of Alderman on tonight’s news who feel bad for former Alderman Sandi Jackson who goes to prison today. If they feel sorry for that corrupt public official I can’t help but wonder what their corruption threshold truly is.

  16. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 5:14 pm:

Yeah and it’s not like Les Miz where he stole to feed his family. They were buying Michael Jackson memorabilia and taxidermy.

=== is there going to be a single African-American anywhere near the top of the Cook County ballot in the fall? ===

    Recorder of Deeds Karen Yarbrough

  18. - I wear Wrangler - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 6:22 pm:

Dear Cook County GOP: opportunity knocks.

  19. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 7:11 pm:

===Cook County Democratic Party Chairman Joe Berrios told reporters Friday that Brown was questioned before the slating about whether she faced an investigation, and she told them no.===

Yeah, because the first thing the Feds do when they investigate someone is knock on their door to let them know what they are doing. Remember Blago? He had no idea what was going on until he was arrested.

  20. - Levois - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 7:45 pm:

“Dear Cook County GOP: opportunity knocks.”

They won’t know what to do, and who would vote them?

  21. - regular democrat - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 7:50 pm:

I believe they will replace her with Bridget gainer woman with impeccable credentials. I know she not black but I believe she can bridge the divide

  22. - park - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 8:17 pm:

Good. Now get rid of Berrios and the County will be cleaner.

  23. - Just Me - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 8:19 pm:

Lets count how the Democratic machine is doing this week:

    1. Countywide Democrat investigated by the FBI for corruption.
    2. Former city Alderman and wife to Congressional Democrat goes to jail for corruption.
    3. Former Democratic legislator is told to report to prison in three days for corruption.

I think it’s an up week.

  24. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 8:41 pm:

Just Me, how did Hastert fare this week?

  25. - Just Me - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 9:03 pm:

Anonymous — Touche, but I would point out that he isn’t charged with public corruption.

  26. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 20, 15 @ 10:32 pm:

His underlying offense is much worse than mere corruption.

  27. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Oct 21, 15 @ 8:06 am:

Cook County Democratic Party Chairman Joe Berrios told reporters Friday that Brown was questioned before the slating about whether she faced an investigation, and she told them no.

She didn’t implode. Her nose didn’t grow. Satan didn’t appear next to her and laugh. So, there you have it folks - proof that you can lie and not have lightening strike you dead on the spot.

  28. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 21, 15 @ 8:50 am:

She can always move to Northwest Indiana, lower taxes and less federal oversite, giving her free reign.

  29. - AgentOrange - Wednesday, Oct 21, 15 @ 10:21 pm:

Ugh. Worst. Politician. Ever. She is incentivized to suppress technology in an office that, like Recorder of Deeds or Assessor, screams for it. How else can she maintain a patronage army to knock on doors and pass out punch lists at the polls if she (correctly) implements the sort of technology that nearly every other major court system in the nation has.

    How could anybody support thst?
