Because… Madigan!

Monday, Mar 14, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* GQ has posted a somewhat clueless interview of Rep. Ken Dunkin, but this is my favorite part

GQ: Do you think that President Obama is doing the bidding of Speaker Madigan?

Dunkin: Yes. He. Is.

* Meanwhile, the fun continues in the 5th House District…

* Mayor Emanuel on the Dunkin-Stratton race

“We’ve had a standstill down in Springfield, and I think the Governor and Ken Dunkin have a partnership, and I think it’s bad for Chicago, bad for Illinois. And the question is: Are we going to have somebody rewarded that, in my view, is not going to pass a budget that invests in Chicago and in Chicago’s schoolchildren, or are we going to hold everything hostage?”

* And if you have the time, watch this video of Rep. Dunkin speaking to elderly constituents, many of whom won’t look at him

From the video…

“All I did, all I did was go around Mike Madigan and got the governor to release $2 billion. $2 billion for child care assistance, for the developmentally disabled and for senior services.”

Almost a captive audience. Some of them look like they wish he would go away.

  2. - 47th Ward - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:20 pm:

    Mike Madigan Facts

Mike Madigan wears sunglasses so that his eyes won’t hurt the sun.

When Mike Madigan swims in the ocean, the sharks swim in metal cages.

Mike Madigan will never have a heart attack. His heart isn’t foolish enough to attack him.

Mike Madigan doesn’t dial the wrong number. You answered the wrong phone.

Mike Madigan’s calendar goes from March 30th to April 2nd. Nobody fools Mike Madigan.

Mike Madigan does not sleep. He waits.

Hilarious..me don’t think them ladies are interested in Dunkin.. NOT HIS VOTERS!! LOL

  4. - Mouthy - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:22 pm:

He’s gonna be one bitter dude come Wednesday morning…
    That’ll be the cat’s meow…

  5. - wordslinger - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:23 pm:

–GQ: Do you think that President Obama is doing the bidding of Speaker Madigan?

    Dunkin: Yes. He. Is.–

Would have been a drone strike by now, don’t you think?

I think this sign off by Dunkin to the interviewer ranks with any Daleyism, I or II.

–Thank you so much. Don’t make me look like I sound! Make me look good!–

  6. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:24 pm:

I guess trying to play the victim to your own choices might not work as planned.

If Dunkin wins, he’ll be insufferable…

  7. - TominChicago - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:25 pm:

Dunkin is not very good at thinking on his feet. Dunkin’s central theme regarding why people shouldn’t listen to Obama on the Stratton endorsement is because Obama endorsed Emanuel. Dunkin is then required to admit that he too endorsed Rahm. Dunkin then excuses that endorsement by saying he didn’t know about McDonald or the tax increases.

But then Obama didn’t know about that stuff either when he endorsed Emanuel.

  8. - The Dude Abides - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:33 pm:

Chuck Norris once asked Mike Madigan to be his bodyguard.

  9. - Beaner - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:33 pm:

Diner: I can’t believe we have to listen to this lying has been gas bag, rather than listening to Chicago’s jazz station WDCB 90.9fm tasteful broadcast of jazz, blues, acoustic/Americana music like we usually do. Oh well, some folks need the $50 I guess.

  10. - @MisterJayEm - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:33 pm:

Fifty bucks might get folks to vote for him, but nobody’s gonna listen to Ken Dunkin for so little.

    – MrJM

  11. - Annonin' - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:35 pm:

    Mr/Ms TominChicago:
Dunkin’ aint so good sittin’ down either ….remember he was sittin’ before he jumped up into the President field of vision.
BTW Dunkin’ deal on child care was mostly a coincidence. The GOPies were foldin’ and the $uper$tar saw a chance to boost Dunkin’ too. They they got to know him. Then they shifted to Bentom

  12. - out of touch - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:35 pm:

“I may have missed a vote or 2, but I’ve never missed a vote that harms my constituents”–Ken Dunkin from video above.

He must not have any kids that require day care services, seniors, or union members in his district. That’s some serious gerrymandering!

  13. - chi - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:40 pm:

Raise your hands if you’re still alive. See? that means I’m doing my job down in Springfield for each of you.

  14. - Tumbleweed lines - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:42 pm:

If anyone knows African American voters and watched the full video through to the end you will see he warmed up to a few of them and may well have flipped a few. That my friends is working it hard in the field. I still think the Rauner tag has stuck too much and may well cost him the election.

  15. - phocion - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:45 pm:

Ken Dunkin has been an embarrassment to the State of Illinois and the Democratic Party since he was elected in 2002. Hubris, dishonesty, thuggery, greed, and a pattern of poor judgment have all been hallmarks of his tenure as a public official. The voters of the 5th District have a choice of whether to move on or whether to maintain the unprincipled and undisciplined representations they currently have.

  16. - Grandpa - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:45 pm:

Ken is going to have a baaad day tomorrow if these folks are his constituents. He is obviously bothering them.

  17. - LizPhairTax - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:45 pm:

Every senior’s thought bubble: Dude. Come on. I’m just trying to eat lunch. Shut it down.

    Dunkin’s thought bubble: Killing it!

  18. - Annonin' - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:49 pm:

Guessin’ some posts are not gettin’thru today
Capt Fax you really should get the whole transcript only because wha was run is total gibberish..the whole tape would be a hoot.

  19. - Moe Berg - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 12:53 pm:

    47th Ward: +1; excellent

  20. - Anon221 - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:21 pm:

Welcome to the Ken Dunkin Dinner Theatre. Hear such famous lines as:

    “I’m tryin’ to get everyone’s attention.” (1.06)

“I’m doin’ my job if you are receivin’ these services. (LIHEAP, Meals on Wheels, rent assistance- raise your hands high!!) (3:23)

    “My seniors, my childcare…”

    “That’s the State. That’s Me!” (9:27)

And stay for the Geography Quiz at 17:30!!! Do you know your Great Lakes?!?

  21. - Frenchie Mendoza - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:27 pm:

The body language in that video is brutal. Brutal.

I want to say Dunkin is a smart guy. I want to say that. But after listening (and watching) Dunkin over the past three weeks or so — I can’t say that. He’s not a smart guy.

    At all.

Anyone who can’t — or won’t — sense what the folks in that video are saying is a dumb guy. Real, real dumb.

  22. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:37 pm:

“Does your tv work? it’s because of me.
Does the sun shine? That’s me too.”

Who decided to hold this event? Was the baby nursery at the hospital closed, because I think they would have been more attentive.

  23. - Lt. Guv. - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:38 pm:

This from the guy who stated to me he was attending the NCSL meeting in Denver over the summer of 2015 to get legally high. I don’t have any problem with that - but is does speak to who he is.

  24. - Roadrager - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:50 pm:

Fantastic clincher on that GQ piece.

“Don’t make me look like I sound! Make me look good!”

  25. - btowntruth - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:54 pm:

    He’s an unintentional comedian.
In between that video and the GQ interview there is comedy gold to be mined.

  26. - Frenchie Mendoza - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:54 pm:

BTW — the weirdest line in the GQ interview was Dunkin referring to his “streaks of independence.”

Ken, I don’t know what the “streaks” are that you’re referring to — but they’re not “independence.”

Weirdest metaphor — or maybe non-sequitur? — that I’ve heard in a long.

  27. - Anonymous - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:55 pm:

Dunkin claims he voted with Unions 95% of the time. Great but the one vote he was desperately needed on he was a no show. Kind of like the 95% free throw shooter who misses in Game 7 with the championship on the line.

  28. - Lt. Guv. - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:56 pm:

47tth Ward & GOP ads are totally tone deaf to the district.

  29. - VanillaMan - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 1:57 pm:

I came here to tell you that the bad things you have heard about me aren’t true, and then if they were true, then you need to know I did it for you so I can help you help yourself.

  30. - outsuder - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 2:10 pm:

I agree with Tumbleweed …. and I also think Dunkin did a pretty good job in that room. Of course, I listened to the entire thing.

  31. - 47th Ward - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 3:04 pm:

Evelyn, there is only one “t” in 47th Ward.

Also, I think your snark detector might need a tune-up. Or is it tone up?

I’m here all week folks. Be sure to tip your waitress, and try the veal.

  32. - Rich Miller - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 3:06 pm:

    ===and try the veal===

Never touch it. I prefer my cruelty in politics.

  33. - Century Club - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 3:08 pm:

Only in Illinois are people so bass ackward that you would claim that a man who has the power to literally annihilate all life on planet Earth is doing the bidding of a the leader of 1/2 of the state legislature.

  34. - low level - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 3:41 pm:

Is state rep Dunkin’s only income? He doesnt make enough to afford suits like that, IMO. (Im not sayin’, Im just sayin’.)

  35. - Rizzo Ratso - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 3:48 pm:

I watched the video and all I could think throughout as Ken tried to justify his decisions:

The Dunkin doth protest too much.

  36. - Anonymous - Monday, Mar 14, 16 @ 4:16 pm:

I loved the vote buying math lesson. Per Ken, 30,000 voters at $50 =…..$150,000. No wonder higher Ed approps is on such good shape!

  37. - Marty Funkhouser - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 9:32 am:

Thing I noticed in this video was Dunkin basically telling these voters that he “picked” them during the remap.
