Rauner piles on Trump

Tuesday, Jun 7, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Bruce Rauner on Donald Trump…

“I am disgusted by these recent comments, and as I’ve said many times, I’m appalled by the rhetoric in the presidential race. Those comments do not reflect the values of the Republican Party. They do not reflect the values of America.”

The governor has previously said that he won’t endorse Trump.

It’s a yes or no Rauner Crew.

    Pick. A. Side.

  2. - Norseman - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:46 pm:

Rauner is definitely an expert on appalling rhetoric.

  3. - 360 Degree TurnAround - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:49 pm:

the funny thing is…the comments by Trump must represent the Republican party. He is the nominee, elected nominee!

  4. - Juice - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:49 pm:

“I am disgusted by these recent comments…”

Which ones, Governor? The ones where Trump called CPS parents freeloaders, or the ones where he said the schools where a large number of black and brown kids go are like prisons? Wait, that’s right, he didn’t do that.

  5. - Aldyth - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:51 pm:

Considering that Rauner has taken notes and used Trumpish techniques…

  6. - JoanP - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:51 pm:

Rauner was awfully wishy-washy. He said he won’t “formally endorse” Trump but would back the party’s candidate. So the question is, is that still his position? Or will he still back someone who does “not reflect the values of the Republican Party . . . [and] America”?

  7. - Huh? - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:52 pm:

Tone deaf to his own rhetoric.

Too little and too late. Didn’t vote for him the first time, will never vote for him.

  8. - JoanP - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:53 pm:

Okay, my last made no sense. I meant “Will he DECLINE to back someone . . .”

  9. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:53 pm:

“I am disgusted by the things I’ve been sayin’”
    “Gol darnit”

  10. - Huh? - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:55 pm:

Does this mean that 1.4% is going to Cincinnati and voted against the donald at the convention? Please go and make a fool of yourself.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:56 pm:

    - Huh? -

Or Rauner can go to Cleveland and do that…

    Either one…

  12. - Albany Park Patriot - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:57 pm:

As leader of the Illinois Republican Party will he allow a coordinated campaign here in November?

  13. - Springfieldish - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 3:58 pm:

This from the yahoo who said the Illinois Supreme Court was corrupt? Good Lord! Make that man go stand in the corner with his mouth shut, please!

  14. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:00 pm:

===Those comments do not reflect the values of the Republican Party.”===

Where has Rauner been for the past eight years? Here are the values of the Republican Party summed up neatly in one editorial:

  15. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:02 pm:

Well, I’m appalled by the rhetoric in the governor’s race. Oh, wait, Rauner’s not running for office, but campagnin’ like he is. It would be interesting to see who’s negatives are worse right now. His or Trump’s?

  16. - Amalia - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:03 pm:

Rauner, do as I say, not as I do.

  17. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:03 pm:

Fake Governor Rauner to Donald Trump: My nickname for you is “Annoying Orange”. Why don’t you make like a banana and split?

  18. - Rabid - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:04 pm:

How many democrats voted for trump, mission accomplished

  19. - Anon - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:11 pm:

Lol Bruce. Man, you are twisted. You understand very little, gov.

  20. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:13 pm:

===The governor has previously said that he won’t endorse Trump.===

Maybe, but he also said he’d support the nominee, right? Someone needs to follow up on that. “Not endorsing” doesn’t mean much if you’re still supporting the sweet potato in a wig.

  21. - cdog - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:17 pm:

The disconnection from what Rauner says about others and what he says and does is staggering.

The ILGOP has to be worried. This tour of destruction and the contradictory statements he makes hourly, put a whole new spin to “loose lips sink ships!!”

  22. - No Longer A Lurker - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:22 pm:

I think I need to order another case of popcorn to get through November.

  23. - Captain Illini - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:24 pm:

Now I get what his Turn Around agenda really is, since he’s said so many double entendre’ he’s like a tilt-o-whirl at the state fair…in fact he’s the living Happy Hollow!

  24. - sal-says - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:35 pm:

== “I am disgusted by these recent comments, and as I’ve said many times, I’m appalled by the rhetoric in the presidential race. Those comments do not reflect the values of the Republican Party. They do not reflect the values of America.” ==

    Please.

“I am disgusted by my recent comments and demonizing, and as I’ve said many times, I’m appalled by the rhetoric in my continuing campaign. Those comments do not reflect the values of the Illinos Republican Party. They do not reflect the values of Illinois.”

    Fixed it, Brucie.

Seems like the Trump party nee Republican party musta sent the memo out after a while to back away, later rather than sooner?

  25. - Mcleaniac - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:40 pm:

Rauner has been a letdown since shortly after he was sworn in. Hope a good candidate from either party runs and beats him next election.

  26. - crazybleedingheart - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:44 pm:

“One rich kid to another: Hey, I thought I could do the job, too. Like you, I’d never tried public office but also never failed at anything (as you know, BK court is for winners). But take it from me, it’s not that fun. Better to stay that guy that would have been a huge success but got out of the game in the nick of time.”

  27. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:46 pm:

Sorry Bruce, but those comments do reflect the values of the Republican Party. They represent millions of voters who selected Trump and Republican politicians who followed the voters and endorsed or supported Trump.

If Trump focused instead on demonizing unions instead of Mexicans and Muslims, Rauner would have given him a ringing endorsement.

  28. - SAP - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 4:46 pm:

I think Rauner gets props for disavowing Trump, just like Kirk should. Rauner’s policies or lack thereof have disproportionally impacted minorities, but I think that is about reducing his own tax burden, not bigotry. I think Rauner is clueless and/or wrong about a lot of governing and it is fair to compare him to Trump for that. It is not fair to compare him to Trump on the bigotry.

  29. - steve schnorf - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:04 pm:

Some of us on here have reached the place where, when someone they dislike does the right thing they still won’t give credit where in my opinion it is due. That’s a shame. Governor Rauner and Sen Kirk are, in my opinion, both right on this issue and deserve credit for it.

  30. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:06 pm:

The man needs to be removed from office before he destroys what is left of government and our people.

  32. - Mama - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:42 pm:

I remember Rauner saying he would support the person who wins the Republican nomination. Trump won the Republican nomination. Therefore, Rauner supports Trump even if he doesn’t admit it.

  33. - Macbeth - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:42 pm:

    Schnorf +1

Then why don’t more Illinois GOP denounce *Rauner* in the same way?

I mean, Rauner won’t stand for Trump — his values, his rhetoric — but the Illinois GOP will stand for Rauner? His values, his rhetoric?

Somewhere there’s a disconnect. What’s not disconnected, however, is the straight, slick line between Rauner’s wallet and the wallet of every GOP rep.

    Billionaire Fight!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. - Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 5:57 pm:

    @Steve Schnorf

When the governor does something laudable in his job, I would be more than happy to give him credit. But to criticize Trump for being Trump. Not good enough in my book to get a kudos from me. Sign the 2016 stopgap, and I will soften.

  36. - Annonin' - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:01 pm:

We vote “too late” for Big Brain and CommandoMakeItUp. Both bowed to this moroon already. BigBrain has made his rental payment to the ILGOP and Durkie so their sleaszy will be spent tobring out Trump voters in November. Doubt that any voters will buy this failed mulligan.

  37. - DHSJim - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:26 pm:

Looks like Rauner is piling on everybody today. Next thing you know he’ll be piling on Mother Teresa.

  38. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:35 pm:

    Steve, with much respect,

I think both Kirk and Rauner did the right thing, but for the wrong reasons. While I can welcome that, I will not applaud them for it. They both made calculated moves today, despite ample opportunity for months to distance themselves from Trump.

I am glad they finally got here, but like others, I’m appalled that it took them so long. No points for that in my book.

  39. - Macbeth - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:54 pm:

    Come on, Bruce.

You’re GOP. Trump’s GOP. You guys both stand for the same stuff. Three months from now, you’ll be glad-handing, smiling, and praising Trump. Smiling, standing around in your wrinkled khakis.

You can’t pretend you don’t like Trump — or can’t stand for Trump’s policies — because it hurts your infinite campaign.

We get it. You two are simpatico. You’re both rich white guys. We get it.

  40. - Macbeth - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 6:56 pm:

    BTW — here’s a newsflash:

Madigan won’t be the issue come November. It’s Trump. And your embrace of Trump.

Fire Madigan? How about *fire Trump* and his racist views? That’s your issue, Ace. You rich guys can drink wine and deal with it.

  41. - Huh? - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 7:03 pm:

  42. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 7:09 pm:

    – Those comments do not reflect the values of the Republican Party. –

Republican primary voters and caucus-goers, obviously, disagree.

They are the comments of the man who bested 15 GOP governors and senators, current and former, all across the country.

That ain’t Reality TV, it’s Reality.

Don’t blame me, I voted for Kasich. And Dole. And HW, twice.

–Some of us on here have reached the place where, when someone they dislike does the right thing they still won’t give credit where in my opinion it is due. That’s a shame. Governor Rauner and Sen Kirk are, in my opinion, both right on this issue and deserve credit for it.

    Schnorf +1 –

I give Kirk and Rauner credit for sticking their fingers in the air today — today! — to determine which way the wind is blowing. They were supporters of Trump, until today. They ain’t Profiles in Courage, by a long shot.

Trump’s recent comments on Curiel are unremarkable in the context of what he has been saying for months.

For crying out loud, months ago, this bald racist said he would ban a fifth of humanity, including returning United States citizens and soldiers, from entering the country due to their religion.

You get oogats from me if you couldn’t locate your Testicular Virility or find your voice back then to stand up to that fundamental perversion of what this country is all about.

Plenty of Republicans did stand up and rejected Trump, long ago.

Plenty of Republican Gute Deutsche, did not, have not, and will not.

He’s all yours. I’m sure your children and grandchildren will be proud of your principled stand.

  43. - Pundent - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 7:15 pm:

I applaud both Kirk and Rauner for denouncing Trump. Better late than never. I won’t rehash everything that Trump has said or done. But why was this the tipping point? That’s why this rings hollow.

  44. - steve schnorf - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 8:38 pm:

I’m not sure how many Republicans post on here, but are any of you planning on voting for Trump? I’m not.

  45. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 8:51 pm:

    - steve schnorf -

    No Trump for me, thanks.

As a Republican, I’m embarrassed that some of my party still excuses the man while condemning the continued catalogued behavior of Donald Trump.

  46. - Suburban Republican - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 8:52 pm:

    Never Trump. Never Hillary.

  47. - Mama - Tuesday, Jun 7, 16 @ 9:05 pm:

Suburban Republican, your statement makes zero sense! One of those two will be the president of the USA. Pick a lane!

“Governor Rauner and Sen Kirk are, in my opinion, both right on this issue and deserve credit for it.”

Let me be the first to applaud Gov. Rauner and Sen. Kirk for not poisoning school children.

    Well done, heroes!

    ——————————

Mama, don’t forget. We have third parties here in America. Suburban Republican may be considering Gary Johnson, the Libretarian candidate.

This Democrat, who is thoroughly appalled by the presumptive candidates of both major parties, will give a great deal of thought to voting for Jill Stein of the Green Party in Nov. 2016. Not only does Ms. Stein share a large number of political positions with Bernie Sanders (who I voted for in the Illinois primary), she also has a husband who, to the best of my knowledge, has not been accused of sexual harassment.

There are other female candidates out there. To paraphrase Oswego Willy: “vote accordingly”.

  50. - @MisterJayEm - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 7:02 am:

Mama said, “One of those two [Trump or Clinton] will be the president of the USA.”

Jill Stein has many virtuous qualities, but next POTUS ain’t one of them.

    – MrJM

  51. - Daniel Plainview - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 8:00 am:

    - both right on this issue and deserve credit for it. -

Yes, this Governor who moved to block Syrian refugees from Illinois and who’s been blowing dog whistles all over Illinois is obviously miles apart from Trump.

Integrity and courage aren’t ad hoc virtues, especially for supposed adults.

  52. - doedoa - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 8:14 am:

There is one characteristic shared by both Bruce and Donald - Demagoguery.

  53. - John Reynolds - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 8:17 am:

Kind of like the pot (Rauner) calling the kettle (Trump) black.

    Two peas in a pod.

What Trump said is wrong, but free to say it. But Republicans use *political correctness* or my favorite *play the race card* as a sword. Even worse is Trumps threat to take on the Judicial Branch. Its humorous that Conservatives, who always say they defend the Constitution, dont say much about this.

Rauner (the pot) certainly has said nothing about this to Trump (the kettle).

  54. - Rabid - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 8:26 am:

My at large delegate govenor has a mandate from the voters to attend and represent them?

  55. - Rabid - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 8:44 am:

Sounds like a personal problem not embracing the poorly educated voters decision, they are your core constituency

  56. - cdog - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 9:06 am:

Applauding Rauner’s dismissal of Trump is weak stuff.

The only thing we have learned from this is that Rauner cannot figure out how to weave the crafty Trump into his own abusive narrative.

Both these gentleman’s principles are pretty dark at the core. The principles that they want you to see and believe, during the daily news loops, are flimflam populist nonsense subject to change from the heat du jour.

  57. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 9:19 am:

I’m seeing other Republican U.S. senators not supporting Trump or giving him a very short time period to change (Sen. Corker).

I applaud this, but at the same time, Republicans are reaping the bountiful harvest they have sown, with dog whistle politics, birthers, mass shootings truthers, etc. Among these are the people who think Obama staged mass shootings so he can push anti-gun legislation.

  58. - pundent - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 9:24 am:

=Applauding Rauner’s dismissal of Trump is weak stuff.=

Particularly when the current outrage is over Trump’s characterization of a Federal Judge. This is after all coming from a Governor who called our own State Supreme Court corrupt.

  59. - RNUG - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 9:31 am:

== I’m not sure how many Republicans post on here, but are any of you planning on voting for Trump? I’m not. ==

I won’t vote for Hillary, so it has to be Trump. I would vote for Bernie over Trump. I voted in the past for Ross Perot and John Anderson but I won’t be wasting a vote on an independent without a chance this year.

And at the State level I’ll be voting g all D for the first time in my life with the sole exception of McCann.

  60. - Reboot - Wednesday, Jun 8, 16 @ 10:09 am:

What? Trump and Rauner use the same playbook, open your mouth and let it fly. Never a retraction from either of them no matter how inflammatory the statement. If Trump wins the US it will be like Illinois, totally dysfunctional. VP Rauner, the perfect running mate.
