Former state GOP chairman: Trump can’t win, Hillary better alternative

Wednesday, Jul 13, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Illinois Review

Former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady, told Bill Cameron on “Connected to Chicago” that Donald Trump “cannot win the election.” Brady, who is a Kasich delegate to the Republican National Convention, said there’s still an outside chance that Trump will not receive the nomination. Brady told Cameron that Trump’s solutions are not Republican solutions and that Trump’s lack of organization ensures he will lose.

Brady said neither Abe Lincoln or Ronald Reagan would attend this year’s convention because of Trump, and that he’s not surprised that many members of the Illinois GOP Congressional Delegation aren’t attending - although they usually don’t. However, Brady believes this absence of delegates may be a way to open the convention and nominate someone other than Trump.

Regarding the presumptive Democrat Party nominee, Brady told Cameron that FBI Director James Comey is “one of the most highly respected law enforcement people in the country” and that he had “no quarrel with his decision not to bring forward” an indictment of Clinton.

Brady admitted that no matter what happens, he’s “certainly not voting for Donald Trump” in November; and thinks that four years of Hillary Clinton might be good in that it will allow the Republicans to get the Senate back in 2018, which he presumes the Republicans will lose this year. Brady said he “cannot stomach the idea of Donald Trump being in the White House for a minute,” and that Hillary Clinton is a better alternative.

Discuss.

ICYMI: GOP Convention Providing Around the Clock Satellite Interview Opportunities for Regional Television Affiliates

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The 2016 Republican National Convention will provide regional television affiliates with around-the-clock access to satellite interviews with delegates, elected officials, and Convention surrogates live or live-to-tape during the week of the Convention (July 18-21, 2016).

GOP-TV is a television production run jointly by the Republican National Convention and the Republican National Committee to provide surrogate interviews to local TV affiliates, live or live-to-tape, via satellite. It will be provided free-of-charge to television stations. We will have a large Regional Press operation with specific staffers working with your television station to book interviews.

There will be multiple locations around the Convention complex to maximize local affiliates’ access to interviews. The studios will be available Monday, July 18th through Thursday, July 21st, from 6 am – 12 am each day for live or live-to-tape interviews.

In addition to facilitating remote interviews via satellite, the GOP-TV studios and satellite feed will regularly provide behind-the-scenes original raw content for television stations’ to utilize.

I’m not a convention type person and have only been to one national convention (when it was in Chicago), but from that experience I’m figuring that 11:59 pm interviews with delegates could be, um, interesting.

Well, what does the self-proclaimed head of the Illinois GOP think?

Oh yeah. He doesn’t think anything. He smiles and laughs and pretends that the question asked wasn’t asked.

  2. - Annonin' - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 3:51 pm:

Wonerin’ if Brady as asked how confusing it is to be trashin’ trump while helpin’ BigBrain spend $5+ million for the Trump GOTV and having Ayers and Chip out in Vegas tryin to suck $100 million for the proTrump Super PAC.

  3. - DGD - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 3:52 pm:

There’s a reason why he’s the “Former” state chairman.

  4. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 3:54 pm:

It’s hard to know why he’s going to Cleveland. The candidate he’s a delegate for isn’t going. Pat wasn’t exactly welcomed warmly at the State Convention. Vote for whoever you want to. Don’t see a whole lot more need for your service over the next couple of weeks.

That’s great Pat. Way to encourage our base to sit at home and kill down ballot candidates.

Feel the Johnson! Can mass media finally give the Libertarians a shot this year? At some point, can we move past being forced into one of just two parties?

    ===Regarding the presumptive Democrat Party nominee… ===

    That’s fun.

The Illinois Review does more to divide the former ILGOP (ILRaunerites, LLC) then just about any outside alleged Republican leaning group in the state.

I guess explaining how a former chairman of the state party is wrong not for not backing a race baiting misogynist is too tough for the Illinois Review, or…

  9. - A Democrat's view - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:06 pm:

He’s right about Trump not being a true Republican. Just consider his positions on a handful of core issues that have defined Republican ideology in the post war era:

    1) He opposes free trade, the hallmark Adam Smith-inspired Republican economics.

    2) He’s against Reagan-Bush style foreign interventionism.

    3) He opposes “small government” entitlement reform, like Paul Ryan’s Social Security and Medicare proposals.

    4) And does anyone really think he is genuinely pro-life on abortion? Anyone?

Call him a nationalist or a nativist, a populist or demagogue. But viewed from a Political Science 101 perspective, he is not a Republican.

  10. - Albany Park Patriot - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:07 pm:

In the “comments” section, he is accused of stealing beer from College Republicans. Talk about a Civil War…

  11. - DuPage Saint - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:11 pm:

A Guy: I don’t particularly see a need for his services over next couple of decades. Drive the vote down then we have justice Liz Warren and Cory Booker we can refocus our energy for 2044 when you might be relevant again. I guess those pledges everyone had to take to support the candidate only applied to Trump

  12. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:13 pm:

    - A Guy -

Knowing you support Donald Trump I guess you think the Illinois Review is right?

  13. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:22 pm:

D Saint, there are plenty of folks who aren’t thrilled with where this wound up. Something to consider is that there were 17 candidates vying for this spot, in and of itself that was going to create a need to unify. There are a number of those candidates that might have been “divisive” in the party for being “Too (pick an adjective)”
Trump was the most unusual of the crop, just as Bernie was on the other side. People aren’t screaming their support. Most GOP folks I come into contact with have a greater disdain for Hillary than love for Trump.

He won. By every measure, he won. Changing the rules to suit the game, during or after the game is something that’s bad policy no matter who does it, no matter when.

Pat Brady is a little bit like Pat Quinn. He just doesn’t know when to leave. He’s pandering now and in a national setting, he’ll be pummeled. Illinois tolerates people (on both sides of the aisle) that no other state would. In Cleveland, he’ll be “Pat who?” and quickly be told to get his shine box.

  14. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:22 pm:

–Don’t see a whole lot more need for your service over the next couple of weeks.–

That’s right, Guy. What the GOP needs is more unprincipled, go-along, get-along hangers-on who are in it for the social experience, like a knitting club.

Brady’s wrong on a critical point: Trump can win, and that’s the grave danger.

Good to see Republicans like him and Webb at least having the testicular virility to stand for something, and say it out loud.

  15. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:23 pm:

OW, I think I’ve explained myself. I’m supporting our nominee. As always, like most precinct captains, I’ll be working my hump off to work the ballot from the bottom up.

    Why or why not?

How are Donald Trump and Bruce Rauner…

    “Different?”

    Hmm.

    Ugh.

  19. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:43 pm:

Sling, you do know that Hillary Clinton is running on the other side, right? Do you have any of your snide reflections for them too?

Is testicular virility a measurement commensurate with how much agreement someone has with you?

Couple of heroes, Webb and Brady. Got it.

    I don’t frequent that site.

  21. - A guy - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:54 pm:

===Brady’s wrong on a critical point: Trump can win, and that’s the grave danger.====

Trump can win. His name is on the ballot.

Grave Danger? I’ve been hearing that since the 60s. Nixon, Humphrey, McGovern, Reagan, Obama, for heaven’s sake. All (and more) “grave danger.”

Fortunately the framers spent some time working out a Separation of Powers. It mostly works. With Trump, it would definitely work given the feelings on both sides.

Not trying to speak for wordslinger, but as a D I save my snide reflections for the anarchist Bernie bros who would rather see a Trump victory just so they can scream “I told you so” at the rest of us.

  24. - Illinois Bob - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 4:59 pm:

Brady has always been a disgrace to the GOP. He fought the rank and file for years, and was completely against letting the membership select leaders, keeping it in the hands of a corrupt few.

The guy’s about Republican as Kirk and could just as easily be a Dem as a GOPer if there was something in it for him.

ANYONE supporting that Clinton corruption mess has no place being taken seriously in the GOP.

  25. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 5:03 pm:

–I’m supporting our nominee. As always, like most precinct captains, I’ll be working my hump off to work the ballot from the bottom up–

Who’s Our Nominee? That’s a funny name — for what office?

Guy, when you’re walking all those thousands of precincts “working your hump off” for Trump, do you also do your “frantic fundraising” for Catholic Charities?

    How does that work?

You give them the Trump pitch on Mexicans and Muslims….

…. and then you turn around and ask for money to support Catholic Charities immigration and naturalization and refugee resettlement programs that were cut by Rauner?

I guess that would make you Cognitive Dissonance.

  26. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 5:10 pm:

    @Moderate Repub:

Don’t worry, your base will turn out. They can’t decide whether they despise minorities, gays, women, or immigrants more.

It knda begs the question, why are you lamenting the possible lack of voter participation among xenophobic, homophobic, mysoginists as a “moderate Republican”?

Wouldn’t our country be better off if these folks had nobody to vote for, and what’s it say about your party that you are worried you can’t win without them?

  27. - Ron - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 5:29 pm:

Trump is a dangerous demagogue and a buffoon. This may be the first time I’ve agreed with Brady.

  28. - cdog - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 5:34 pm:

Trump is a faker (h/t Ginsburg), but he has started some great conversations.

If there was a Brexit style vote stateside, where we the people were choosing to stay in global trade agreements like TPP or NAFTA, there is a strong chance that there would be a US Exit.

Trump has tapped into this and voiced it. Hillary, among her many wildly modulating character traits and positions is too much of a globalist. Globalism helps multi-national corps to clean up with both the producing country and the consuming countries. Globalism is a utopia of low wages, and a low regulation environment bringing products to over-consuming, highly manipulated consumer markets.

Trump gets this. Hopefully Hillary gets it soon. Trump is going to gain a lot of points on this issue alone. He is bad news on many issues but not this one.

Not sure how I am going to vote. Waiting for the head to head to get going.

  29. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 5:35 pm:

I saw a national poll with interesting numbers, which doesn’t mean much considering different results in battleground states…still:

The poll showed 38% supporting Clinton, 17% supporting Trump and another 38% either supporting another candidate or refusing to vote for anyone. Brady is not a traitor and he echoes what many other Republicans feel.

  30. - sal-says - Wednesday, Jul 13, 16 @ 5:37 pm:

== he “cannot stomach the idea of Donald Trump being in the White House for a minute,” and that Hillary Clinton is a better alternative. ==

Can not argue with Brady’s statement or position. Truthful & realistic.

The Wash Post has this quote: “Jeb Bush: I can’t vote for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, ‘and it breaks my heart’”

Bush’s position is anti-Democracy and anti American. No 3rd party candidate has a chance. So, he a says: ‘Don’t bother voting; stay home.’ !

The choice is ‘pick the least worst’, if that’s how you see it, but do your duty & vote. THAT is YOUR voice.

Anything less denegrates the base of America.

We don’t even know what the November ballot will look like.

We don’t know what world or national events will transpire between now and then.

We don’t know so many things that I would propose it might be scarier to have made up your mind already, unless you are a hard-core-one-party-straight-ballot-voter.

I’m not quite following you, Steve. Are you saying you support Brady’s position supporting electing Hillary? I too have a lot of reservations about Trump, but even his worst would be better than anything Clinton would do, IMHO.

I think that Trump would make MUCH better SCOTUS recommendations, be far better in trade negotiations, come up with better economic and foreign policy based upon the advisors he’s brought on the team. I’d be very comfortable with John Bolton as SOS, Giuliani as AG or director of Homeland and someone like Laffer or Kudlow as chief economic advisor, wouldn’t you?
