= A costly primary fight only helps Rauner and is why, among other reasons, Rauner will be re-elected. =
Unless Sen. Durbin were to run, as the rest of the high-profile Dems would defer to him. He’s been elected statewide 3 times and is from Springfield rather than from Chicago, two big pluses.
Durbin has always been an opportunist out for himself, and I just don’t see what the governorship would bring to his table. The state’s a financial mess, leadership on both sides is out there serving their narrow, pocket lining interests with no concern for the state’s future or how much suffering their greed causes the people of Illinois, and the money he’d get from those interests when he leaves office (like Edgar cashed in) wouldn’t come CLOSE to his payday as a lobbyist after retiring from a leadership position in the Senate.
He’s living in the silk purse now. Why would he trade it for a sow’s ear?
- Sense of a Goose - Tuesday, Jul 26, 16 @ 9:46 am:
A strike by AFSCME makes AFSCME the story. Get out of the governor’s way and let him be the story. State employees aren’t held in high regard. Neither is the governor. If he’s the story, that is how you live to fight another day.
Durbin also plays into Rauner’s “career politician” meme, there’s the “Washington Insider” schtick Rauner will have too. Durbin, to his credit, to to Rauner, his “discredit”, has a long, long, long record. Lots to make ads when money is no worry.
Can Durbin get $60-70 million? Rauner spent that, will probably go $90 million. Why not?
Do I think Durbin will go? His age might be a factor, only to, “I could be retired but for 9 months I’m going to be torn down, and my career torn down, mercilessly.”
It grates on any candidate, the negative, and Rauner will go negative to almost 9-figures.
Durbin, easily, could unite Democrats and Labor and the infastructure of s ground game, given a whole year to ramp up, could be very formidable…
… but it’s necessarily “fire in the belly”… it’s how much is Sen. Durbin willing to take, then times that by 3, that’s what Rauner will throw at him.
=we have to be prepared (for strike) and an attack on state workers is an attack on national organization and we’ll fight like hell.=
So we citizens of Illinois, as those being plundered by AFCSME, have to fight like hell in return to protect ourselves from their greed and selfishness.
Remember, all power that public unions have is derived from privileges given to them through the people’s representatives in Springfield.
People will accept those “evils” while those evils are sufferable, but when a long train of abuses and usurpations make the system degrade to absolute despotism, The PEOPLE can, and must, change that.
Striking for the excessive contract being proposed by AFCSME could cross that line. Be very careful…
The Democrats won’t destroy Social Services and have a President of a Social Service group, Diana Rauner, cheering the destruction, calling it a business decision to try to stop it… but Diana Rauner calling for Social Services to be destroyed too.
Nope, non-Raunerites won’t cheering for destroying social services.
I agree with Illinois Bob. Why would Durbin in the twilight of his career give up one of the best gigs in politics to endure $40 to $60 million in Rauner attack ads? And what’s his reward if he survives that onslaught and wins? Dueling with Madigan to clean up the mess. He’s a true sadist if he runs for Guv.
I’m convinced the Dems are best off nominating a Springfield outsider. Preckwinkle, Kennedy, Dart, Bustos?
The biggest question remains: who does Oswego Willy “have his eye on?’
Not sure that is a winning platform Willy. Too narrow of a message. Madigan says we need cuts and that is one area he said he would cut also. They need a message on how to fix Illinois but the solutions to all the problems lie in alienating their contributors and base voters.

These are the only candidates the dems can come up with? They all carry a lot of excess baggage.
Unlike Speaker Madigan, I’m not going to taint anyone with the “stigma” here of being the one I’m watching. Nope. But…

I was surprised the first night went as well as it did, given the justifiable anger at what happened at the DNC with the emails.
I must say, Bernie Sanders is a politician with tremendous class and by far my favorite candidate of this election. He didn’t pull a Ted Cruz. He’s playing for the team, by speaking in support of the nominee and influencing the party’s platform and direction.
–HB if AFSCME is wiped out in Illinois its over nationally. He had better be there.–
International knows that. That’s why at the AFSCME convention, International pledged all support to Council 31. It’s why HRC mentioned it at her speech at the convention. Illinois, I believe is the Alamo for AFSCME. (And yes I know the Texans were defeated at the Alamo. That very well might happen. Hey at least you know you’re getting the straight scoop with me. I try to not engage in perfidy)
So now anyone who disagrees with you is “it”. so much for the liberal respect for other human beings, even those who disagree with them.
BTW my post to you was not provocation, it was merely a warning that you consider your actions when going against the people of Illinois.
50 years ago my Dad went out on strike against Crane co on 43rd and Kedzie. they were warned that if they kept up unreasonable demands to end the strike, they’d close the plant.
The USWA didn’t believe management.
management gave what the USWA demanded, but within five years the 10,000 jobs were all moved to Alabama.
Don’t bite the hand that’s fed you so well over these decades. You may well regret it.
